Local Hero Toby Fournier Saves Stranded Hikers in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Banff, Alberta – In a heart-stopping rescue operation yesterday, local outdoorsman and volunteer firefighter Toby Fournier braved treacherous conditions to save three stranded hikers on Mount Rundle.

The hikers, a family from Calgary, had ventured off the marked trail near the summit when sudden snowfall and high winds left them disoriented and unable to descend. After one member of the group suffered a minor ankle injury, they activated an emergency distress beacon just after 4:30 PM.

Toby Fournier, a seasoned mountaineer and member of Banff Search and Rescue, was among the first responders. Despite fading daylight and worsening weather, Fournier navigated the steep terrain alone to reach the hikers while the rest of the team prepared a helicopter extraction.

'Toby was incredible—he found us in near-whiteout conditions and kept us calm,' said survivor Daniel Reeves. 'He even carried my son part of the way down when the slope got too icy.'

Thanks to Fournier’s quick thinking and expertise, the group was safely escorted to a lower elevation, where a Parks Canada helicopter transported them to safety. None of the hikers required hospitalization.

'It’s all in a day’s work,' Fournier said humbly after the rescue. 'I’m just glad everyone’s okay.'

Local officials are reminding hikers to check weather conditions and stay on designated trails, especially during early spring when conditions can change rapidly.

For his bravery, Fournier is set to receive a commendation from the Banff mayor’s office next week.
