I will preface by saying: I can be a bit of a hater. Recently, I was beginning to loose hope that those isolated, beautiful beaches even still existed. Thailand is a non-stop party and Bali is so packed you can barely breath. Just the other day, I pulled back the covers of my highly-rated Georgetown hostel to find nothing other than a freshly used condom. No matter what your chill level, sleeping in a stranger's sex sheets is not acceptable. I know loosing beautiful destinations to the masses is a tale as old as time, but it still sucks. This, however, is the story of a different sort of place. A place that could care less who you are and what you have. A place that would rather your respect than your money. I don't intend to lay out my trip in a day by day format simply because you can visit this place for a weekend, a month, or a year and still reap the same benefits. I intended on staying for a few days, months later and I'm still here. I have spent the last ten years traveling all around the world. I nearly always travel alone and am constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone. It would be impossible. I have lived on a circus train, meditated in silence for months in the Himalaya, and been fed and sheltered by a Muslim family when I quite literally had nowhere else to go. One place so authentic, so different, that I am quite certain I will always carry a piece of it with me. I had been traveling alone for quite some time when I made it to Malaysia. I didn't have much money, 20 USD to be exact, but I had managed on less in the past. I did have a bus ticket and a flight home, so naturally I assumed would all work itself out and off I went. It should come as no surprise when I tell you, I live a bit recklessly. Mersing and Tanjung Gemok are within 30 minutes of each other and easily walkable. I encourage checking the schedule and deciding which town to catch a ferry from based on your arrival time. The ferry goes directly to Pulau Tioman and makes five stops on the western side of the Island. Now, when I say largest, take that with a grain of salt. This island is extremely remote, being the largest stop on the island simply means that it has an ATM and a few more restaurants than the others. The views are incredible and you will certainly get what you pay for. If you are on a budget or want to explore more than your hotel, I highly recommend Tekek. It is central, a tiny bit more populated, and filled with opportunities galore. The minute I stepped off the jetty, I knew there was something off. Initially I couldn't quite put my finger on it. The beach wasn't lined with drunken gap-years and bars, but sprinkled with families heading to the mosque to pray. It certainly didn't feel as if I was on holiday anymore, it was more as if I had stepped into someone's home. It was at this exact moment that mild panic started to set in. I hadn't booked any lodging in advance and this was not your commonplace beach town. Google had told me there were indeed rooms available, but things were starting to feel awfully spread out. I was expecting loads of hostels lining the beach, not a quaint, residential town. I began to worry that the few budget options would be booked solid. As I turned the corner to make my way towards the buildings at the end of the trail, I assured myself that I would make this work. Just as I was I told myself to 'toughen up' I looked up and was greeted by a man with a huge smile and wild hair. Lewis once said, 'Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. The natives are passionate about the environment and the expats are conscientious and respectful. One man in particular has taken it upon himself to make a difference. Hisham's passion for the environment is contagious. Every time I see him, he's involved in another project. Whether it be making wallets from disgarded plastic, organizing recycling events, or replanting coral reef in front of his property, Hisham knows what he stands for. I've seen him call out tourists for littering on more than one occasion. If you lack the decency to clean up after yourself, Tioman could care less if you come back. That's just how this island rolls. Bring respect or stay out. This is their home, they are allowing you to stay because the place is freakin' magic. Not because they want your money. I think it goes without saying, but I highly recommend booking a room at Tioman Cabana in Tekek. Tioman boasts some of the most amazing selection of local, whole food imaginable. If you are a health nut like me, you probably know how hard it is to eat consciously while traveling. That's not a problem on this island. Whether it be a smoothie bowl for breakfast or a fresh catch for dinner, the selection of food on the island does not disappoint. If you prefer a burger and fried bananas, walk in any direction down the single road running through town and you are sure to stumble upon a food stand who's prices will blow your mind. Whether you plan on staying for a week or year, do yourself a favor and head to Pulau Tioman. I don't foresee the island loosing its sparkle anytime soon simply because the inhabitants refuse to comply. A large resort or diving partnership would bring tons of cash to this little island, but the locals have said no. It simply is not worth the trade-off. How many people actually turn down easy cash? Seriously, take a moment and thing about it. Whether it be ski resorts, safari destinations, or beachfront property, very few people turn down and opportunity to make extra money. They refuse to think about future generations and they allow these magical destinations to stripped of all culture. After obtaining my diving license in Perhentian , I knew I had to dive again before I leave the country. Luckily, Malaysia is home to an abundance of beautiful dive locations, notably in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia and in East Malaysia — the fabled Sipadan is rated as one of the best dive location in the world. But this time my destination was Tioman, which is located in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia. Getting to the Mersing Jetty in Johor where the ferry departs is a 4. It took another 2 hours on the ferry before arriving at the final stop in Salang Bay. Admirable, but I personally feel that we as divers should be on the lookout wherever we go, particularly given our position to make a difference with relative ease. When I was diving in Perhentian I only needed a rash guard, even for a night dive. Naturally, I thought it would be the same here as I declined an offer to wear a wetsuit. But the smart-ass me had even better ideas and did the first dive with neither a rash guard nor a t-shirt! As it turns out, it got so cold that I shivered slightly towards the end of the dive. Apparently the water temperature was at 28 degrees compared to above 30 degrees in Perhentian. Note to self: ask about the water temperature before going into the water in a new location, and wear at least a rash guard! With the exception of two dives, every other dive was memorable. Map pufferfish, bat fish, brown anemonefish, unicorn fish, copperband butterfly fish, and humphead bannerfish were the few species that thrilled me most. Of course, the coral reefs here were equally beautiful. Nudibranchs are another bunch that I laid my eyes on for the first time. All I can say is that they are quite the amazing little creatures. Not forgetting I also had the luxury of admiring turtles up close again! These guys really made the trip that extra special. Labas tops the list due to its unique and rocky nature which provides plenty of underpasses to swim through. On the other hand, Renggis had a rather flat terrain hence making it a very easy and relaxing dive, it was there where we saw a submerged treadmill. Anyone up for a underwater run? If there were any complains about this trip, it would be their operations that I felt could be run a little better, but it may be a non-issue to some. Another issue was the water problem that plagued this part of the island. They were having issues with the water pumps for weeks, affecting water supply to a few areas. Our room happened to be in one of them and we had no choice but to improvise. Tioman is also considerably cleaner than Perhentian Kecil. There are more eco-friendly dive centres, and the constant cleaning and recycling efforts by the parties involved are keeping this island a paradise for beach goers and divers. Here am I with the luxury of constant internet connection and computer access yet I am unable to be consistently blogging; I wonder how am I going to keep up once I hit the road, especially with sporadic internet access. I went diving in Tioman Island last month for four days. My contract work concluded at the end of last month and I immediately flew off to Penang to visit friends for the long Merdeka weekend and to check out the George Town Festival. We were offered an incredible view of the city skyline from the top. Although I should probably get back to a regular gym to train for my New Zealand tour starting today! I wonder what else did I do…. Hint: my backpack has a capacity of only 30 litres. There is something about diving in the underwater world that is so alluring. Turtle Bay had a booth and they were offering pretty affordable deals for dive trips and courses I could have saved a bit of money here, but I have no regrets that I took them earlier. Upon visiting their website, what caught my attention was that they are big on marine protection and conservation, additionally they have been presented several PADI environmental awards for their efforts, which I think is pretty cool.
