Thread starter Bal Start date Dec 21, Register to view full-size images Join today. Bal One of Us. Jul 30, 1, 1 Anchorage, Alaska. I know some of you don't make it over to convo very often, so here is the link to a thread I started that some of you might be interested in. It's a real pity that we have bans on this sort of stuff in Aus, as it would be a beautiful way to see our Alpine areas. It's so quiet when you are out mushing as the dogs only bark when they are getting to leave and then it's just the sounds of dog paws on snow and the sliding of the sled runners over the trail. I wonder what my chances would be of getting a permit from the govt to come home and run sled dog tours out of Thredbo or Perisher? Any suggestions? Last edited by a moderator: Nov 14, Luko One of Us. I think they have a dog mushing race at Dinner Plain every year. Mr Bungle said:. Click to expand Last edited by a moderator: Nov 17, A guy does it at falls creek too - its the only commercial dog sledding in the Southern Hemisphere. Scroll most of the way down to see the info Falls Creek While in Alaska last year I went to the Iditarod headquarters and we got to have a go on the dog sleds they had there. It was in early Autumn so there was no snow around and the 'sled' had wheels, but it was heaps of fun all the same. Jul 24, 56, 65, 1, the sunny illawarra. Bal - easier ways to give yourself a coronary than setting that up. Mr Bungle - no-one in all of South America either? May 10, 19, 3 0 Jindabyne There is only once place in NSW where it is possible Bago State Forest, near Tumbarumba where I used to work. However you could not reliably know when there would be enough snow for mushing in advance. Actually there may be another place, but probably same problems with snow Freehold, surrounded by NPWS. It's hard enough to get permission to ride a bicycle in the Park Ooops, wasn't thinking about it being commercial Bogong Part of the Furniture Ski Pass. Jun 16, 15, 10, wherever the whim of the moment takes me. It would be much easier to do it in Vic than N. In Victoria there's P. All you have to do is persuade one of these bodies and then you can mush to your hearts content. Of course there's also Dinner Plain all Freehold land and the non park bits of Tasmania's Central Plateau huge area but unreliable snow. Bogong said:. Wills, but its miles from anywhere. Thats whats good about it. Sorry for the jargon. To take it further, I'd talk to the bloke that used to run it at Falls Ck see link above and the mushers at Dinner Plain. I think Lake Mntn would be an excellent venue. Very close to a city of 4 million people, the summit area to the south of the carpark is not used by skiers, so mushers and XC skiers wouldn't get in each others way. Only one prob. It's a fairly remote mountain, but the road is sealed except for the last couple of km. Dec 29, 3 88 Melbourne. Bal, I take issue with a number of your comments. We have enough problems with dogs in the Vic high country as it is. We only just got rid of the cattle. If you allow in commercial dogs, then everyone else would see that and want to take their dog into the National Park too. We have no history or cultural affinity with dog mushing in Australia. It would be like having a barbeque in Siberia. If I'm skiing along a narrow track I don't want to get run over by a team of dogs screaming along in the opposite direction. It's actually OK to have areas of land that few or no people use. We don't need to put additional strains on the environment. Bloody greenies! They ruin the fun for everyone. Jun 10, 1, 0 0. Oct 16, 54, 32, 1, Narbethong, Vic. I'm sure I've read about races being held at Dinner Plain. Australia the supposedly 'free and easy' country is simply anti-dog. Go to Europe - dogs are even allowed in restaurants etc. Australia is paranoid about dogs. Last edited by a moderator: Nov 11, Goodness me, some of us seem a little touchy this morning! The problem with dogs is not the ones on leashes. It's the dogs whose owners think that because there are out of sight of other people, or authority figures, they can let the dog off the leash and do what they like. While this is a tiny minority of owners, there will be some. Gadunkgadunk: 'Siberians cooked food too, isn't that a barbecue? They could, for example, use a fondue- being Scandinavian, I believe, a fondue would be culturally inappropriate to both Siberia and Australia. Anyone alive in the s would know that a fondue and a barbeque are quite different culinary techniques. Gadunkgadunk: 'Typical selfish view of it all, cliche greenie tight wearing lycra comment' I'm not sure what this is meant to mean; perhaps you haven't had your coffee this morning. I think the concern is more about conflicts between fast-moving and slow-moving traffic on steep, low-friction surfaces. That isn't a green issue, it's a safety concern. And for the record, my fabrics of choice are wool and polarfleece, not lycra. Bal: 'If I continue to enjoy mushing in Alaska why shouldn't I be able to enjoy doing that back home if I am a responsible person? Fireworks and marijuana are also legal in many places around the world, but not in most of Australia. We are probably more concerned than other countries about dogs in certain places where they may cause noise or hygiene issues. There is no way I would ever take my two dogs admittedly small to a forest because I know they'd go AWOL at the first sign of an animal. As long as none were allowed out to breed, and poops were picked up. I think I can say that I understand Australian mountain ecology fairly well. Among other things, my sightings extended the known range of a small carnivore. You appear to be against mushing just on principle. But sled dogs are always tied up either to a moving sled or to something securely anchored to the ground. So they can't escape to bother any critters and the compaction of snow from a sled thus squishing hollow areas under the snow is less than with skis and much less than human feet. The mushing area would be a fraction of one millionth of the area under snow. Mums and Dads recognise specialised activity conducted by people who know their stuff. Therefore they don't re-enact Formula 1 races in the family Magna! It's not as if we want to build a block of flats on fjeldmark near the top of Mt Bogong! Well conducted mushing is an activity with negligable impact on the environment, yet it would allow a lot of people and a few dogs to have a lot of fun. Surely this a win-win all round? As an Australian of Anglo-Saxon ancestry, I have taken heed of your notes on 'culturally appropriate' diet and I have stopped eating Italian and Chinese food and I promise that no more kebabs will ever touch my lips.
