"It is (так и есть)," said the old blind sage (сказал старый слепой мудрец); "you must give up one of your thirteen sons (ты должен отказаться от одного из своих тринадцати сыновей)."
"Then that is the meaning of the swan on the lake, — I must give up my thirteenth son to the Diachbha?"
"It is," said the old blind sage; "you must give up one of your thirteen sons."
"But how can I give one of them away (но как же я могу отдать одного из них) when I am so fond of all (когда я так люблю /их/ всех; fond — любящий; to be fond of smb. — любить кого-л.); and which one shall it be (а который из них это должен быть)?"
"I'll tell you what to do (я расскажу тебе, что /надо/ делать). When the thirteen come home tonight (когда /все/ тринадцать /сыновей/ придут = вернутся домой сегодня вечером), shut the door against the last that comes (закрой дверь перед последним, который придет = перед тем, кто придет последним)."
"But how can I give one of them away when I am so fond of all; and which one shall it be?"
"I'll tell you what to do. When the thirteen come home tonight, shut the door against the last that comes."
Now one of the sons was slow (так вот, один из сыновей был медленным = неловким; slow — медленный, небыстрый; несообразительный), not so keen nor so sharp as another (не такой проницательный или сообразительный, как другие; keen — острый, остро отточенный; хитрый, проницательный; sharp — острый, отточенный, остроконечный; умный, сообразительный); but the eldest (а самый старший /брат/), who was called Sean Ruadh [John the Red], was the best (которого звали Шон Руадх [Рыжий Джон; red — красный; рыжий], был самым лучшим из них; good /better, the best/), the hero of them all (самым храбрым воином из них всех; hero — герой; храбрый воин).
Now one of the sons was slow, not so keen nor so sharp as another; but the eldest, who was called Sean Ruadh [John the Red], was the best, the hero of them all.
And it happened that night (и случилось так, что той ночью) that he came home last (именно он пришел домой последним), and when he came (а когда он пришел) his father shut the door against him (его отец захлопнул перед ним дверь). The boy raised his hands and said (юноша поднял руки и сказал; boy — мальчик; /диал./ мужчина /особ. неженатый/), "Father, what are you going to do with me (отец, что вы собираетесь со мной сделать); what do you wish (чего вы хотите)?"
And it happened that night that he came home last, and when he came his father shut the door against him. The boy raised his hands and said, "Father, what are you going to do with me; what do you wish?"
"It is my duty (это мой долг)," said the father, "to give one of my sons to the Diachbha (отдать одного из своих сыновей Diachbha [божеству или судьбе]); and as you are the thirteenth (и, так как ты тринадцатый), you must go (ты должен идти)."
"Well, give me my outfit for the road (что ж, дайте мне все необходимое в дорогу; outfit — снаряжение /для экспедиции и т.п./, экипировка; одежда, полный комплект одежды)."
"It is my duty," said the father, "to give one of my sons to the Diachbha; and as you are the thirteenth, you must go."
"Well, give me my outfit for the road."
"The outfit was brought (все необходимое было принесено; to bring /brought/), Sean Ruadh put it on (Рыжий Джон оделся: «надел /комплект одежды/ на /себя/»); then the father gave him a black-haired steed (после чего /его/ отец дал ему вороного: «черноволосого» коня; hair — волосы; шерсть /животного/) that could overtake the wind before him (который умел догонять ветер перед собой), and outstrip the wind behind (и опережать ветер, /оставляя его/ позади).
"The outfit was brought, Sean Ruadh put it on; then the father gave him a black-haired steed that could overtake the wind before him, and outstrip the wind behind.
