THERE was a king in Erin long ago (/жил/-был один король в Ирландии давным-давно: «продолжительное время тому назад») who had thirteen sons (у которого было тринадцать сыновей), and as they grew up (и пока они подрастали; to grow /grew, grown/ — расти; to grow up — вырастать, становиться взрослым) he taught them good learning (он обучил их хорошим знаниям; to teach /taught/ — учить, обучать; learning — изучение, учение; знания, эрудиция) and every exercise (и всевозможным упражнениям; every — каждый, всякий; всевозможный, всяческий, всякий) and art (и искусствам) befitting their rank (приличествующим их положению; to befit — годиться, подходить; приличествовать; rank — ряд; высокое положение).
THERE was a king in Erin long ago who had thirteen sons, and as they grew up he taught them good learning and every exercise and art befitting their rank.
One day the king went hunting (однажды: «/в/ один день» король отправился на охоту), and saw a swan (и увидел лебедушку; to see /saw, seen/) swimming in a lake with thirteen little ones (которая плавала в озере с тринадцатью птенцами; little — маленький, небольшой /о размере/; the little ones — малыши, дети; детеныши). She kept driving away the thirteenth (она все время отгоняла тринадцатого /птенца/; to keep /kept/ — держать; to keep doing smth. — продолжать делать что-л.; to drive — гнать; to drive away — прогонять), and would not let it come near the others (и не позволяла ему приближаться: «подходить ближе» к другим).
One day the king went hunting, and saw a swan swimming in a lake with thirteen little ones. She kept driving away the thirteenth, and would not let it come near the others.
The king wondered greatly at this (король этому весьма удивился), and when he came home (и когда он пришел домой) he summoned his Sean dall Glic [old blind sage], and said (он вызвал своего Шона далль Глика /старого слепого мудреца/ и сказал), "I saw a great wonder today (сегодня я видел нечто, что меня весьма удивило: «я увидел нечто чрезвычайно удивительное сегодня»; great — большой, огромный; большой, сильный, глубокий, огромный /о чувствах, состояниях, свойствах и т.п./) while out hunting (пока я был /в лесу: «за пределами /замка/»/ на охоте) — a swan with thirteen cygnets (лебедушку с тринадцатью птенцами: «молодыми лебедями»), and she driving away the thirteenth continually (и она постоянно отгоняла тринадцатого /птенца/), and keeping the twelve with her (а двенадцать держала при себе: «с ней»). Tell me the cause and reason of this (объясни мне увиденное: «расскажи мне причину и повод этого»). Why should a mother hate her thirteenth little one (почему бы это матери ненавидеть своего тринадцатого птенца), and guard the other twelve (и охранять остальных двенадцать)?"
The king wondered greatly at this, and when he came home he summoned his Sean dall Glic [old blind sage], and said, "I saw a great wonder today while out hunting — a swan with thirteen cygnets, and she driving away the thirteenth continually, and keeping the twelve with her. Tell me the cause and reason of this. Why should a mother hate her thirteenth little one, and guard the other twelve?"
"I will tell you (я расскажу тебе)," said the old blind sage (сказал старый слепой мудрец); "all creatures on earth (все существа на земле), whether beast or human (будь то животные или люди), which have thirteen young (у которых есть тринадцать потомков; young — молодежь; молодняк /животных/, детеныши, птенцы), should put the thirteenth away (должны прогнать тринадцатого прочь), and let it wander for itself through the world (и позволить ему бродить самому по себе по /белу/ свету) and find its fate (и /самому/ найти свою судьбу), so that the will of Heaven may work upon it (чтобы воля Провидения смогла воздействовать на него; heaven — небо, небеса; /возвыш./ провидение; to work — работать, трудиться; действовать, оказывать воздействие), and not come down on the others (а не обрушилась бы: «не сошла» на других). Now you have thirteen sons (так вот, у тебя тринадцать сыновей), and you must give the thirteenth to the Diachbha [divinity or fate] (и ты должен отдать тринадцатого Diachbha [божеству или судьбе])."
"I will tell you," said the old blind sage; "all creatures on earth, whether beast or human, which have thirteen young, should put the thirteenth away, and let it wander for itself through the world and find its fate, so that the will of Heaven may work upon it, and not come down on the others. Now you have thirteen sons, and you must give the thirteenth to the Diachbha [divinity or fate]."
