The father never let his eyes off the bird (отец ни разу не спустил глаз с той птицы; never — никогда; ни разу). After a while he said to the Gruagach (спустя какое-то время он сказал Груагаху), "I'll have that bird there for my son (я возьму: «буду иметь» вон ту птицу в качестве своего сына)."
"Well (что ж)," said the Gruagach, "that is your son (это твой сын). I can't blame you for having him (я не могу винить тебя в том, что ты его узнал: «за обладание им»); but I blame your instructor for the information he gave you (но я обвиняю того, кто тебя подучил: «твоего учителя», за ту информацию, которую он тебе дал; to give /gave, given/), and I give him my curse (и я его проклинаю: «даю ему мое проклятие»)."
The father never let his eyes off the bird. After a while he said to the Gruagach, "I'll have that bird there for my son."
"Well," said the Gruagach, "that is your son. I can't blame you for having him; but I blame your instructor for the information he gave you, and I give him my curse."
So the old fisherman got his son back in his proper shape (итак, старый рыбак вернул себе своего сына в его обычном виде: «получил назад своего сына в присущем ему виде»; proper — присущий, свойственный; правильный, надлежащий, должный; shape — форма, очертание; вид, образ, облик), and away they went, father and son, from the house of the Gruagach (и они — отец и сын — пошли прочь из дома Груагаха). The old man felt stronger now (теперь старик чувствовал себя сильнее; to feel /felt/ — чувствовать /себя/), and they never stopped travelling a day (и они ни разу не прервали своего путешествия ни на один день; to stop — останавливать, задерживать; прекращать, кончать) till they came home (пока они не пришли = не вернулись домой).
So the old fisherman got his son back in his proper shape, and away they went, father and son, from the house of the Gruagach. The old man felt stronger now, and they never stopped travelling a day till they came home.
The old mother was very glad to see her son (старая мать была очень рада видеть своего сына), and see him such a wise, smart man (и /к тому же/ видеть его таким мудрым, толковым юношей).
After coming home they had no means but the fishing (по возвращении домой у них не было никаких других средств к существованию, кроме рыболовства; means — средство, способ; средства, состояние); they were as poor as ever before (они были столь же бедны, как и прежде).
The old mother was very glad to see her son, and see him such a wise, smart man.

Now, when the day came (и вот, когда день /скачек/ наступил; to come /came, come/ — идти, приходить; наступать, приближаться), the old fisherman's son said (сын старого рыбака сказал),
"Come away with me, father, to the races (отец, пойдем со мной на скачки)."
At this time it was given out at every crossroad in Erin, and in all public places in the kingdom, that there were to be great horse-races. Now, when the day came, the old fisherman's son said,
"Come away with me, father, to the races."
The old man went with him (старик пошел вместе с ним), and when they were near the race-course (и когда они были возле ипподрома; race — состязание в беге, бег на скорость; скачки, бега; course — курс, направление; /спорт./ дорожка, скаковой круг; race-course — ипподром), the son said (сын сказал), "Stop here till I tell you this (стой: «остановись» здесь до тех пор, пока я тебе вот что скажу: «скажу это»): I'll make myself into the best horse that's here today (я превращусь в самого лучшего жеребца: «сделаю себя самым лучшим жеребцом…» /из тех/, что присутствуют здесь сегодня), and do you take me to the place where the races are to be (а ты отведешь меня к тому месту, где должны состояться скачки), and when you take me in (а когда ты отведешь меня туда: «введешь меня»), I'll open my mouth (я стану открывать рот), trying to kill and eat every man that'll be near me (пытаясь убить и съесть всякого, кто будет рядом со мной), I'll have such life and swiftness (такая во мне будет живость и резвость; life — жизнь, существование; энергия, живость); and do you find a rider for me that'll ride me (а ты найди для меня наездника, который будет скакать на мне), and don't let me go (и не выпускай меня: «не давай мне идти» до тех пор) till the other horses are far ahead on the course (пока другие лошади не будут далеко впереди меня на дорожке; course — курс, направление; /спорт./ дорожка, скаковой круг).
The old man went with him, and when they were near the race-course, the son said, "Stop here till I tell you this: I'll make myself into the best horse that's here today, and do you take me to the place where the races are to be, and when you take me in, I'll open my mouth, trying to kill and eat every man that'll be near me, I'll have such life and swiftness; and do you find a rider for me that'll ride me, and don't let me go till the other horses are far ahead on the course.
