Wow... A much better pressing of this classic. I had the simply vinyl stereo pressing and that was awful. But this is a gem.. A must for your collection.
It's a Noisy tranfer from the master tapes. You can hear it from the first seconds.
If Fifth Dimension is The Byrds' Revolver, then the follow-up, Younger Than Yesterday, is their Sgt. Pepper. While songs like "Eight Miles High" were the band's entry point into psychedelia, YTY is a full-blown head trip. "C.T.A.-102" is a tune about alien life, replete with spacy electronic effects. Backward tapes add a disorienting feel to the dreamy "Thoughts and Words" and the Eastern-influenced "Mind Gardens," and trippy lyrics abound throughout the album. But tracks like the country-rocker "Time Between" and the harmony-heavy Dylan cover "My Back Pages" keep the band in touch with their rootsy side.
Like them or not, and there is as much to like as there is to dislike, the Byrds were musical game changers, all based around the shimmering 12 string Rickenbacker played by Roger McGuinn, along with the transformative smoke laden harmonies of David Crosby and Gene Clark.

Four of the best numbers found here were penned by Chris Hillman, solidly based on his bluegrass influences, where with the Byrds he developed some of the most infectious slippery country riffs ever known, simply consider “The Girl With No Name” and “Time Between.” Yet all of the material wasn’t so good, well received, nor did it stand the test of time, case in point, McGuinn’s electronic “C.T.A - 102” (a blazer type quasar discovered the early 1960’s by a radio survey), a song that gave way to the manipulated oscillation of voices, then there was “Mind Gardens,” where Crosby is self indulgent at best, though entirely goofy would be more to the point, with most listeners sure that the man was lysergicly blissed at the time, where there’s simply no excuse for this number to have ever seen the light of day.

Certainly “So You Want To Be A Rock n’ Roll Star” was the high point of the album, featuring the brassy hot riffs of trumpeter Hugh Masekela, hailing from South Africa, which embodied the song with an unexpected jagged jazzy edge. Now, the album’s title Younger Than Yesterday was lifted from the Bob Dylan song “My Back Pages,” which is included here, provided the Byrds with their third Dylan hit. Other visions from the album included “Everybody’s Been Burned,” penned when David Crosby (now on the outs) was played on the folk club circuit back in 1962, along with the luscious “Renaissance Fair,” which seemed intent on both defining and capturing the heady laidback atmosphere of the time. The album’s closing track “Why” had already been released as the B-Side to “Eight Miles High,” and was a far better version than that laid down here. “Have You Seen Her Face” was a mirror image of the Paul McCartney number “I’ve Just Seen Her Face,” where the influence of the Beatles on Hillman sounded as if the Fab 4 were waiting in the closet to rework and revision his songs.

*** The Fun Facts: Originally named the Jet Set before adopting the Byrds as their moniker, the clever spelling wasn’t just some Renaissance-inspired wordplay; Roger McGuinn and company had dubbed their group in honor of the great Admiral Richard Byrd, famous for his expeditions to both the North and South poles.

As to the song “So You Wanna Be A Rock n’ Roll Star,” seems the boys were looking through some teen magazines, noticing how many people were actually rock n’ roll stars, then thought that everybody should have a list of ingredients, a kit on how to become such.

“Girl With No Name” was inspired by a young lady with the unusual moniker of Girl Freiberg. Girl was a friend of David Crosby, her parents nicknamed her Girl as she was the only female out of their six children. It’s said that she arrived in San Francisco at the age of sixteen, a runaway, who married fellow scene-ster and bassist for Quicksilver messenger Service, David Friebery.

Then there’s the song “CTA - 102,” named for a quasar discovered in the early 1960’s. In 1965 Gennady Sholomitskii discover that the object’s radio emissions were varying, a public announcement that caused a world wide sensation followed, claiming that the emission was caused by an unknown stellar civilization.

Younger Than Yesterday is the fourth album by the American rock band the Byrds and was released on February 6, 1967 on Columbia Records (see 1967 in music). It saw the band continuing to integrate elements of psychedelia and jazz into their music, a process they had begun on their previous album, Fifth Dimension. In addition, the album captured the band and record producer Gary Usher experimenting with new musical textures, including brass instruments, reverse tape effects and an electronic oscillator.

The album also marked the emergence of the band's bass player Chris Hillman as a talented songwriter and vocalist. Prior to Younger Than Yesterday, Hillman had only received one shared writing credit with the Byrds, but this album saw him credited as the sole composer of four songs and a co-writer of "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star". Byrds expert Tim Connors has remarked that two of Hillman's compositions on Younger Than Yesterday exhibited country and western influences and thus can be seen as early indicators of the country rock experimentation that would feature—to a greater or lesser degree—on all of the Byrds' subsequent albums.

Upon release, the album peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and reached number 37 on the UK Albums Chart. It was preceded by the "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" single in January 1967, which reached the Top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100. Two additional singles taken from the album, "My Back Pages" and "Have You Seen Her Face", were also moderately successful on the Billboard singles chart. However, none of the singles taken from the album charted in the United Kingdom. Music critics Richie Unterberger and David Fricke have both remarked that although it was largely overlooked by the public at the time of its release, the album's critical standing has improved over the years and today Younger Than Yesterday is considered one of the Byrds' best albums. The title of Younger Than Yesterday is derived from the lyrics of "My Back Pages", a song written by Bob Dylan, which was covered on the album.

What do you think of Younger Than Yesterday?
I recently for the first time, listened to Younger than Yesterday and immediately it felt like the band did it 100% right this time. The Byrds took a chance and lost most of their fan base with their sound shift. This makes The Byrds heroes to real artists.

Which is the best album by the Byrds?
AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger. Younger Than Yesterday was somewhat overlooked at the time of its release during an intensely competitive era that found the Byrds on a commercial downslide. Time, however, has shown it to be the most durable of the Byrds ' albums, with the exception of Mr. Tambourine Man.
