In this Friday, Sept. 16, 2017, file photo, a person uses a smart phone in Chicago.
There are a lot of factors to consider when getting your child started in the smartphone world. New or hand-me-down? Prepaid or family plan? Android or iPhone? Let’s break it down.
If you have decided your teenager is ready for their first phone that doesn’t look like a toy, then there are many decisions to make. And maybe the first one is whether your child is truly ready for a smartphone. While there is no set age when kids are magically responsible enough to handle all the potential issues a smartphone can bring, no one knows your child better than you.
First, you may be considering handing down a phone from someone else in the family. This can be a great, budget-friendly option, but beware of potential downsides. Some older smartphone models are no longer receiving security updates, which leaves them vulnerable to hackers. And if malware makes its way onto your child’s unsecured phone, hackers can find a way to sneak onto other devices that use your home Wi-Fi if you aren’t careful. So whether you’re considering the hand-me-down or buying an older model smartphone for your teen, check to see how long the manufacturer will guarantee those security updates.
Parents may be wary of signing their new smartphone user onto their family cellular plan. But when I added my youngest to our unlimited plan with AT&T , it only cost $35 per month. Some carriers do have mix-and-match plans that allow parents to have unlimited data at full speed, but may throttle kids’ plans when the network is busy. An added bonus is having all your kids on one plan to make it easier to track. But there are certainly no-contract carriers to use as alternatives. Just remember with those cheaper prices, you’ll likely sacrifice data. For instance, Tello has a plan for $10 per month with unlimited calling and texting, but only 1 GB. Customers can pay more for additional data and an unlimited plan costs $29 per month.
Whether you choose Android or iPhone may all come down to which universe your family lives in. My kids’ schools and my husband’s office both use Mac computers, so it was a no-brainer when we decided to go iOS. It’s nice to take advantage of iMessage, Screen Time and Family Sharing that exist in Apple’s world. But if you are an Android family, you may find it easier to control Family Link and other apps if kids’ phones are Android as well. It’s generally more simple to keep the whole family on the same operating system.
The best first-time smartphone for Apple users is the iPhone SE . While Apple has never been known for being inexpensive, this is the most affordable iPhone at $429. Your kids will like it because it has 5G, 64GB of storage, wireless charging and a great camera and battery. Parents will appreciate its durability, water resistance and Touch ID for security.
Android users may gravitate toward the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G for $279. It also has a great camera and comes with 64GB of storage with a memory card slot to add a lot more. Kids may like the bigger 6.5” screen, compared to the iPhone’s 4.7” and Frame Booster which makes gaming graphics more life-like. It also has a fingerprint sensor (although this one is on the side) and a battery that will last all day for most kids.
Lastly, if you aren’t ready to give your child access to the internet and social media apps, Gabb Wireless says it has a safe phone for kids at $149. Is it a smartphone? Not necessarily because it doesn’t connect to the internet and has very basic functionality. It only allows a limited number of pre-loaded apps such as music, calendar, alarm clock, calculator and files. Kids will appreciate the Bluetooth connectivity, the camera and the unlimited calling and texting. Moms and dads can relax knowing it comes with GPS tracking and a fingerprint scan for security. There are no-contract plans for $24.99 per month or other options for one or two-year contracts at a discount.
Buying a smartphone for a teen for the first time can be nerve-wracking. Do your research to decide which one is right for your child. And then make sure you take all the necessary precautions like setting up parental controls and having clear guidelines and open communication before you hand it over.

Leah Messer is opening up about the first time she had sex.

The Teen Mom 2 star revealed how young she was when she started having sexual relations on Tuesday's episode of the MTV show.

"I cannot believe my kids are 10. I was 13 the first time I had sex," Messer, 28, told her friend Kylie. "The girls are 10. Granted, I did not get pregnant until later. I’m saying it’s confusing. I didn’t know anything! I didn’t know anything."

Messer has 10-year-old twin daughters Aliannah and Aleeah from her previous relationship with Corey Simms. She is also mom to daughter Adalynn, 7, whom she shares with ex-husband Jeremy Calvert.

"I want them to know everything and know what happens," Messer said of teaching her daughters about sexual education. "Not just, 'I don't want to be like you, ma.' Okay, but why?"

Kylie said, "But I think your atmosphere growing up was way different than their atmosphere. Yours was obviously not that great, so I don't think that that's something you have to worry about. But you’re right you have to let them know about things. Be honest with them."

Messer replied, "I'm so proud of the girls, even though they’re twins, they have their own identity."

As Messer, her mother and her daughters gathered to celebrate the twins' birthday, the mother of three said, "You guys get to learn from my mistakes, right?"

"You’ve made some big bad mistakes," Aliannah said.

Messer replied, "What do you mean I’ve made some big bad mistakes? Getting pregnant at 17 wasn’t a mistake, it was a challenge."

"I didn't know what the heck I was doing, but I made it work and look at us now," she continued.

When asked by her mother if she was proud of her girls, Messer said, "I am 100 percent proud that they’re my daughters. Happy birthday to both of you guys."

Teen Mom 2 airs Tuesdays (8 p.m. ET) on MTV.

A video of two Amish girls buying swimsuits for the 'first time' has captured the hearts of thousands, as fans praise their grandmother for being so 'progressive.'
Return to Amish stars Rosanna Miller, 18, and Maureen Byler, 19, were filmed bathing suit shopping in Florida with their grandmother Ada Byler for the 16th season of the TLC reality series.
Footage from the episode that originally aired in April in the U.S. was shared on TLC UK's YouTube channel last Friday and has been viewed more than 847,000 times.
Big step: Return to Amish stars Rosanna Miller, 18, and Maureen Byler, 19, were filmed bathing suit shopping with their grandmother during the show's 16th season
Selection: The teens modeled a variety of suits, trying both one-pieces and bikinis
The girls, who grew up in strict Amish communities, were understandably apprehensive when the sales associate Claudia showed them the swimsuit area of the store.
'Being Amish, the girls are supposed to be covered up, like they're not allowed to show their skin or anything,' Rosanna explained in her testimonial.
When Maureen caught sight of a bandeau-style bikini top, she asked: 'Don't your boobs fall out?' She said she wouldn't be buying a two-piece because she wasn't 'ready to show off my goodies.'
Shopping for swimsuits was somewhat mindboggling for the girls, who weren't even allowed to wear patterns in the Amish communities they left behind. Almost all of their clothes were made for them.
Neither Maureen nor Rosanna knew what size they wore, and Ada suggested they try their underwear size because panties are the only things the Amish buy in stores.
Easing into things: Maureen and Rosanna grew up in strict Amish communities and were apprehensive at first, but the sales associate helped make them comfortable
Getting into it: Rosanna told Maureen she looked 'sexy' when she stepped out in a navy one-piece with a plunging neckline
Choices: Maureen ended up choosing a hunter green one piece, while Rosana went for a striped bikini
'I'm really nervous wearing something this skimpy,' Maureen confessed in her testimonial. 'I'm scared.'
Claudia hooked them up with a mix of flattering one-pieces and bikinis. While helping Rosanna in the dressing room, she kindly suggested she consider a bikini wax now that she would be wearing swimsuits.
'This swimsuit shows places that I thought no one would ever see except for my husband on my wedding night,' Rosanna said.
Claudia and Ada gave the girls plenty of love when they stepped out of their respective dressing rooms in their first round of bathing suits.
'Damn, you look sexy,' Rosanna told Maureen.
Maureen ended up picking out a one-piece while Rosanna went with a two-piece style that bared her stomach. Ada said she was happy with both of the girls' choices, saying they looked 'really cute.'
Looking good: The sales associate also convinced the girls' grandmother Ada to try on a suit herself, which she ended up getting
Aww: The video ended with Ada and her granddaughters showing off their new suits while taking a dip in the ocean
Viral: Fans had a lot of feelings about the clip, with many sharing how happy they are to see Rosanna and Maureen experiencing new things
Claudia also convinced Ada to try on a suit herself, which she ended up getting.
'If the bishop found out we all bought swimming suits, we'd all get shunned,' she noted, 'because the Amish don't wear bathing suits, and they don't show their skin like that.'
The video ended with Ada and her granddaughters showing off their new suits while taking a dip in the ocean.
Fans had a lot of feelings about the clip, with many sharing how happy they are to see Rosanna and Maureen experiencing new things.
'These girls are so sweet! It's not easy literally changing almost every part of the way you live your life,' one viewer commented. 'These girls are brave, smart, open-minded, and I love that they don't [lose] themselves along the way.'
Wait, what? However, others were quick to notice that Rosanna was already sporting tan lines when she was trying on the suits, meaning the scene was likely staged
Explanation? One YouTuber said that 'these girls left the Amish a while ago,' explaining that 'some of these ''first time'' videos are staged, hence the tan lines'
'Ahhh I wish I could be friends with them. I feel like I’d be able to teach them about fashion that’s more mainstream but still covers up.,' someone else added. 'There’s so many cute clothing options that are still conservative.'
Another wrote: 'God bless grandma for being progressive.'
However, other eagle-eyed viewers were quick to notice that Rosanna already had tan lines when she was trying on the swimsuits, which was also a point of contention when the episode first aired in the U.S.
'If they don’t normally dress like that, how does Rosanna already have a bikini tan line?' one person asked, while another added: 'Rosanna already has tan lines, so she's been showing skin somewhere...'
One YouTuber said that 'these girls left the Amish a while ago,' explaining that 'some of these ''first time'' videos are staged, hence the tan lines.'
'But they were raised in the Amish community and did leave it,' she added.

WASHINGTON – Parents wondering if their teenagers are having sex might look upstairs or down the hall. New research finds most sexually active teens first had sex in their parents' homes, typically late at night.
The findings, being released Thursday, should dispel myths that teens are most often having sex after school, when parents are still at work, researchers said. The message for parents, experts say, is nothing new: Be aware of what your kids are up to.
``Kids no longer need to drive to lookout point to have sex,'' said Sarah Brown, director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. ``The data suggest the adults may be in the house.''
By the time students are in the ninth grade, 34 percent have had sexual intercourse. That rises to 60 percent by 12th grade.
The report, by researchers at Child Trends, is based on a national teen survey that has been tracking about 8,000 teens since 1997. The ages of the teens ranged from 12-16 when the survey began, and researchers have interviewed the same group every year since then. This report looks specifically at the 664 teens who reported having sex for the first time between 1999 and 2000.
Of those surveyed in 2000, 56 percent said they first had sex at their family's home or at the home of their partner's family.
Another 12 percent had their first sex at a friend's house; 9 percent at a teen's own home; 4 percent in a truck or car; 3 percent at a park or other outdoor place and 3 percent at a hotel or motel. Ten percent said someplace else.
The findings reinforce earlier research that parents can have a significant impact on their children's decisions about sex, Brown said.
``This notion that it's impossible to supervise kids is ludicrous if a lot of them are having sex in the rec room,'' she said.
Earlier this month, researchers reported that teen girls who are close to their moms are more likely to stay virgins. That report, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, also found that half of mothers of sexually active teens didn't realize their children were having sex. Further, while the vast majority of mothers strongly disapprove of their teenager's having sex, large numbers of teens don't realize how their moms feel.
``Parents need to know where their children are and what they're doing,'' Brown said. ``This is not a new idea.''
As for timing, Thursday's report found 42 percent of teens said their first sexual encounter was at night, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Another 28 percent said it was in the evening, between 6-10 p.m.
Just 15 percent said it was in the late afternoon, between 3-6 p.m.
That cuts against the conventional wisdom among parents and policy makers alike that teens are more ``at risk'' of sex after school, said Jennifer Manlove, a researcher at Child Trends.
Research has shown that teens are more likely to commit crime during the after-school hours, Brown said. But people have wrongly assumed that the same goes for sex, she said.
The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth did not look at whether teens were having sex on weeknights or weekends. And it did not ask if parents were home at the time. Although the survey has been interviewing teens since 1997, this was the first year the questions about where and when teens first had sex were asked.
