Sybil Stallone Bbc

In the 1980s, Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) suddenly became the talk of the town. Tens of thousands of Americans were diagnosed with an illness that was previously unheard of. A trigger for this sudden epidemic was the release of a film, "Sybil". Telling the dramatic story of a woman diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder, the film was shown across America making Sybil a household name.

Now, Sybil's original diagnosis is being challenged. The psychiatric community is divided and people are asking whether MPD exists at all.

Sybil was born in Minnesota in the early 1920s. At the age of 37, she was treated by a psychiatrist, Dr Cornelia Wilbur, who came to believe that her patient was a multiple with 16 'alter' personalities. Under hypnosis Sybil had recovered lost memories of a traumatic childhood. Dr Wilbur believed that Sybil's mental illness had been caused by these extreme traumas she had experienced in youth. As a way of coping with the distress, Sybil had split-off, creating 'alter' personalities at moments of crisis in her life. These 'alters' would experience the pain instead of Sybil. It was a compelling theory, that used childhood abuse to explain multiple personalities.

In 1973 the book "Sybil" was published. It became a best-seller and was swiftly followed by a film. Within a few years Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) had become a famous condition, widely discussed and debated, listed and detailed in the American psychiatric manual.

Sue Kiner was diagnosed with MPD six years ago. But now the question is being asked as to whether Sybil's multiple personalities were genuine or had they been planted in her memory during hypnosis?

Dr. Wilbur claimed that during therapy an array of distinct and separate personalities had emerged from Sybil, each telling the doctor about some terrible experience of Sybil's early life, experiences that Sybil herself seemed to know nothing about. The experiences were of being sexually and physically abused by her mother.

The goal of therapy, according to Dr. Wilbur, was to integrate all the alters into one personality. To achieve this the therapist had to get to know the role each alter was playing in the person's life. Dr. Wilbur taught that this meant having conversations with these alters, however many there were.

Twenty years on, both Cornelia Wilbur and Sybil have died. However, Dr. Herbert Spiegel, one of the original psychiatrists who met Sybil, has recently made a claim that challenges Dr Wilbur's entire theory and practice. Herbert Spiegel is concerned that suggestible patients are being unduly influenced in therapy, and this has raised controversy in the field.

Sarah Francis has a distinctly personal perspective on the disorder - she is a therapist who has also been diagnosed with MPD herself. She and many others disagree with Herbert Spiegel. They do not accept that therapy can create the disorder. Those who treat MPD say they are aware that memories may be unreliable in vulnerable people and this has been noted in the official diagnostic manual. They have also changed the name Multiple Personality Disorder to Dissociative Identity Disorder. The therapists continue diagnosing.

Nikki Stockley's documentary explores the strange and surprising story of MPD through the lives of the patients themselves, and through the key psychiatrists in the field including Dr Herbert Spiegel, who has challenged Dr Wilbur's diagnosis. With interviews from Sybil's school friends, Horizon pieces together the life of the enigmatic woman whose case started the whole MPD phenomenon, and explores the truth about Multiple Personality Disorder.

Who else has the internet killed off?
Jon Bon Jovi was also hit by a "death hoax"
To paraphrase the great American humourist Mark Twain, Twitter reports of Sylvester Stallone's death are an exaggeration.
Stallone and his brother confirmed on social media the actor was alive and well after he was the victim of a "death hoax".
Death hoaxes usually originate from a website or person intending to spread the rumour, and go viral as web-users are duped into believing the claim.
In Stallone's case, pranksters even mocked up fake pictures showing the actor in his "final days".
The hoax, which started overnight in the US while the actor and his representatives were asleep, raced across the internet.
By morning, Stallone was already being mourned by a legion of adoring fans.
As Stallone's name topped internet searches, a 2012 video about the death of his son resurfaced as the most watched video on the BBC News website.
The 71-year-old actor and his brother took to social media to debunk the prank.
"Please ignore this stupidity," Stallone wrote in an Instagram post.
"Alive and well and happy and healthy."
Stallone, who recently appeared in the NBC television series This Is Us, said he was "still punching".
His brother railed against the perpetrators of the death hoax.
"Rumors that my brother is dead are false," Frank Stallone wrote on Twitter.
"What kind of sick demented cruel mind thinks of things like this to post?
"People like this are mentally deranged and don't deserve a place in society."
Rumors that my brother is dead are false. What kind of sick demented cruel mind thinks of things like this to post? People like this are mentally deranged and donโ€™t deserve a place in society. @FoxNews @seanhannity @greggutfeld
Iโ€™m very protective of my older brother and I donโ€™t find any humor in this fake post today on my brothers demise. It upset my 96 yr old mother so Iโ€™m doubly upset. I just canโ€™t understand what makes these sick minded people tick? @seanhannity @greggutfeld @FoxNews
While they occurred before the internet, the web has amplified their impact.
Such hoaxes typically target celebrities or politicians.
In fact, Stallone was the victim of another death hoax in 2016, according to NME .
Musician Jon Bon Jovi was notably "killed" by the internet in 2011.
The Livin' on a Prayer singer posted a photo of himself smiling and holding a sign that said: "Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey."
The date and time was written beneath it.
Actor Jackie Chan was also the victim of a death hoax.
The Rush Hour star had the dubious pleasure of having more than 50 RIP Facebook pages in his honour, despite being alive.
The 63-year-old has "died" several times.
In 2011, his representatives took to Facebook to debunk a rumour that he had suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
"He did not suffer a heart attack and die, as was reported on many social networking sites and in online news reports," said the post.
"Jackie is fine and is busy preparing for the filming of his next movie."

Sylvester Stallone's son Sage died from natural causes due to a heart condition, the Los Angeles County Coroner has ruled.
Sage Stallone was found dead at his Hollywood home by an employee and a relative on 13 July.
Bottles of prescription pills were found but it was not clear if they were connected with his death.
Officials said on Thursday that the 36-year-old died due to a condition that causes blockage of the arteries.
Toxicology results showed Stallone had a only a small amount of the sedative hydrocodone in his body.
No other drugs were detected and the death has been classified a natural death.
The actor and film director's sudden death stunned his family and friends.
Sylvester Stallone's publicist described him as "devastated and grief-stricken" and the actor skipped several promotional events for his film The Expendables 2.
Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone's children and co-starred with his father in two films, Rocky V and Daylight.
He also became involved in movie-making, directing a 2006 short, Vic, that was screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
In 1996 the young Stallone co-founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to preserving and promoting the B-movies and exploitation films of the 1970s and '80s.
Sylvester Stallone's spokeswoman said the actor had no comment about the coroner's findings.
