1. No Official Number of Justices

The Constitution doesn’t specify how many justices should be on the Supreme Court. It’s set by Congress—ranging from 5 to 10 before settling at 9 in 1869. FDR even tried (and failed) to 'pack the Court' with up to 15 justices in 1937.

2. First Supreme Court Meeting Was Delayed

The Court was supposed to start in 1789, but bad weather and travel issues delayed its first session until February 2, 1790—and they didn’t even hear a case that year!

3. Only Justice to Also Be President

William Howard Taft was the 27th U.S. President (1909–1913) and later became Chief Justice (1921–1930), making him the only person to hold both jobs.

4. Supreme Court Used to 'Ride Circuit'

Early justices had to travel across the country to hear cases in lower courts—a grueling task in the 1800s. One justice, John Rutledge, resigned because he hated it so much.

5. The 'Jay Court' Was a Flop

The first Chief Justice, John Jay, quit after six years because he thought the Court was too weak. He later became governor of New York and refused a second term as Chief Justice.

6. No TV, No Live Broadcasts (Until Recently)

The Supreme Court banned cameras for decades, only releasing audio recordings of arguments. In 2020, due to COVID-19, they allowed live audio for the first time.

7. A Justice Was Impeached (But Acquitted)

Samuel Chase (1804) was impeached for being too partisan but was acquitted by the Senate, setting the precedent that justices shouldn’t be removed just for unpopular rulings.
