There are a few things which are vital when you go on a ski holiday: good food, good pistes and, of course, good snow. Some skiers save all year for a winter break, only to find the snowfall's so pitiful you couldn't build a decent snowman let alone fly down a double black diamond slope. This year however I seemed to have fallen on my feet and uncovered a location so perfect, it did cross my mind to keep it a secret. With just four days off from work, I decided to take the family toNeustift, Austria, a small alpine town just 20 miles from Innsbruck. The beauty of the location is three-fold. Firstly, Innsbruck is served by low cost airlines including easyJet, meaning what you save on the flights you can splash out on accommodation. Secondly, the resort is just a minute drive from the airport whereas some places can be a gruelling three-hours away, cutting into your ski time. Finally - and best of all - Neustift is home to the Stubai glacier which means you have perfect skiing conditions, whatever your ability, whatever time of year and whatever the weather. Nestled in the valley of Neustift, it has a truly fairy-tale feel with its Tyrolean architecture, large grounds and luxurious interiors. We stayed in a two-bed family apartment attached to the hotel by a heated underground tunnel - itself a big hit with the children. Owned by the Pfurtscheller family, the hotel also has a 2, sq ft world-class spa, cosy bars with huge fireplaces, a wine cellar with 22, bottles from around the globe, and superb gourmet food including a seven-course gala dinner on one night. Another favourite for the kids, and myself, was the unique indoor-turnoutdoor pool. One minute you can be swimming in the indoor pool when the next, the glass walls open, like something from a Star Trek film, and you find yourself swimming outside - surrounded by heavy snowfall and -2degC temperatures. With such out-of-this-world accommodation, you may think it a struggle to entice the family on to the slopes. But with just a short break we wanted to maximise the time we had to ski. At 1, feet above sea level, Neustift has a reputation for having good snow with more than 66kms of runs - the longest at 10km. Between the mountains and the glacier, it boasts nursery slopes, intermediate pistes, cross-country trails and two permanent race courses. If the snowfall has been less than expected, it takes just 20 minutes on the ski bus or hotel shuttle to the glacier, with its year-round quality guarantee. Or you can stick to the mountains in the resort. They have an excellent ski school with English speaking instructors, able to install confidence in even the most novice of skiers. Both my husband and I have earned our snow legs and George is a whiz at eight. But it was wonderful to see Olivia happily attempting the nursery slopes - although under the very watchful eye of the instructors and her parents! Once she had got tired we discovered another bonus of the hotel, the children's club. It entertains and cares for youngsters aged from four to 12, allowing the adults a chance to try the more daring runs. Even if you are in more budget accommodation, of which there is a fair choice, there are children's facilities provided on the slopes - allowing you time to enjoy yourselves without worry. However much fun you have on the slopes though, it's also worth exploring the rest of the Stubai glacier and Neustift. We'd stopped at Jochdole - at 3,ft the highest mountain restaurant in Austria - for a bite to eat and to admire the views. While many Alpine resorts are purpose-built, Neustift is a picturesque working town, with a variety of restaurants. After three days of skiing and pampering, we settled down to our final evening feast at the Jagdhof fully-refreshed. The food there is exquisite, with produce coming from their own farm, and game from the local forests. Guests chat to each other and you get to know everyone's name instead of passing anonymously in the corridors. Most of the people we spoke to were on their third or fourth visit - and had every intention of returning again. That's a glowing recommendation for any destination, but perhaps the very best seal of approval for the holiday came from Olivia. Taking a last look out at the stunning panorama of snowy mountains and alpine trees, she piped up: 'Mummy, are we in Narnia? Visit www. Hire ski equipment in the UK and take it with you - that way you'll get on the slopes quicker. If you are on a budget, there are plenty of guesthouses and even families who'll put you up for a week. Don't miss the spa at the Jagdhof. It offers a unique Stubai glacier treatment with a bath of local herbs and oil massage. It was hard to miss all those cars parked along the Pacific Coast Highway in California. I eased into one of the last spots. Below the boardwalk were hundreds of glorious elephant seals weighing up to 5, pounds and measuring 15 to 16 feet. They are a noisy group. But you never do know for sure. While wandering around the back roads of South Carolina, I discovered cotton fields. The cotton had been recently harvested and the bales were taller than me. The white splotches of cotton that got away made it look like a snow in the fields, and along the roadway, had partially melted. It sure seems like everybody says bonjour in Quebec, whether they speak French or not. I kept seeing six inch gashes in the snow while skiing on the Stubai Glacier in Austria. I finally stopped to see what was up and looked down into a crevasse and saw a much larger void in a glacier. A billboard caught my attention in Manhattan, Kansas. We stopped early for the night. Otherwise I might still not have attended a rodeo. On Miami Beach, topless women sit next to their kids. A few miles up the road, everybody is fully naked. You learn quickly to bring plenty of sun screen. We had never heard of it, but asked for a second helping. Now the stuff is available everywhere. For a bit you suspend belief-just for a second-when an Elvis impersonator steps out of the front door at Graceland in Memphis. In most Chinese bathrooms, toilet paper is not available. You learn quickly to bring your own. In Havana, Cuba a female attendant followed me into the bathroom, handed me toilet paper, paper towels and squirted my hands with soap. She patiently stood waiting until I was done for her tip. At the rim of an active volcano in Nicaragua, you are required to back into the parking space to facilitate a quick exit. I had no idea that a tornado had recently destroyed much of Branson, Missouri until I got there. It looked like a huge bowling ball had bounced down the main drag. Some buildings were rubble while others, just next door, were untouched. At that delightful tourist trap, South of the Border, shopping carts are supplied for those purchasing fireworks. Have respect for the wildness of our Great Lakes. Only the devil could play golf on such a surface, these jagged halite salt crystal formations. The land talks back; on this degree F day, I was surprised to hear pings like a golf club striking a ball. In downtown Detroit, at Hart Plaza, I was shocked to find several drums with mallets that might be pounded by the random passersby. In Vail, I was amused by the number of jet-setters who traveled from resort to resort, days per year. I should have known better. There is something so absolutely peaceful about riding a bike or walking and not hearing car horns and smelling exhaust. By chance, in a Chinese town, we decided to enter a small non-descript museum. The downstairs exhibits were ho-hum but when we got to the second floor we discovered full walls of unbelievable jade art. Who would have known? You could bend an elbow for hours, half-submerged, in volcanic heated water, at the Arenal Springs Resort bar in Costa Rica. No lie. Rather than freeze, you will wear your extra socks on your hands. If you go to Plains, Georgia you might discover that President Jimmy Carter showered during the Great Depression while using a pail with holes drilled into it, and which was filled with a spigot. I hit the brakes and turned around at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base in Oregon. I was rewarded with a free private tour and heard some amazing stories.
