In the NFL the best team will win the majority of the games. Spread betting is the most popular NFL betting option because spread betting handicaps the favorite team, which puts both teams on a more even playing field. This allows wagers on favorites to cover the spread to payout much more than money lines and also allows wagers on underdogs to have an equal chance of winning. NFL spread betting is very easy to understand and this page will explain it in detail.
In NFL spread betting the oddsmakers set a number of points that one team is favored by in the game. This is also known as the games handicap. For a wager on the favorite to payout the favored team must win the game by more points than the spread amount. This is known as covering the spread. For a wager on the underdog to win, the team must either win the game straight up or lose be fewer points than the spread. This is known as beating the spread. For example, if a team is favored by 7 points, then the favorite must win by 8 or more points to cover the spread and the underdog must either win, or lose by 6 or fewer points in order to beat the spread.
In this example, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 10 point favorites over the Dallas Cowboys. The (-) sign beside the spread amount indicates the favorite because they are essentially having 10 points taken away from them, while the (+) sign indicates the underdog because they are basically having 10 points added to their score.
In this example a wager on the Bucs will payout if they win by more than 10 points, while a wager on the Cowboys will payout if they lose by fewer than 10 points or if they pull of the big upset and win the game outright. If the Bucs win by exactly 10 points then the spread bets would push and wagers would be returned.
The most common odds associated with each side of a spread bet are (-110), which means that a $110 bet would win $100. That being said it is possible for the odds to vary slightly if the spread doesn’t perfectly handicap a game. Here is an example:
In this case the oddsmakers feel that it is more likely that the Packers will cover the 3 point spread than it is that the Vikings will beat it. In this case a $120 wager on the Packers covering the spread wins $100, while a $100 wager on the Vikings beating the spread also pays out $100.
In the two examples given in this article the spreads are whole numbers. If the game finishes with the favorite winning by exactly the spread amount then the bet is pushed and the wager is refunded. It is also possible for spreads to include half points (eg. 3.5, 7.5, etc), in which case it would not be possible for the bet to push.

The Los Angeles Chargers (0-0) are set to meet the Las Vegas Raiders (0-0) in Week 1 of the 2022 regular season.

The Chargers came up just shy of the playoffs, finishing 9-8 in 2021. They enter this season with one of the most talented rosters in recent franchise history after adding a slew of key defenders, headlined by J.C. Jackson, Khalil Mack, Sebastian Joseph-Day, among others.
The Raiders, on the other hand, were the ones who knocked Los Angeles out of the playoffs in the season finale, as they beat them with a game-winning field goal in overtime. Las Vegas made some quality additions this offseason, most notably acquiring Davante Adams.
Last season, the two teams split 1-1. The Raiders lead the series against the Chargers, 67-56-2.
Sunday’s contest between Los Angeles and Las Vegas will begin at 1:25 p.m. PT and be televised on CBS.

Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned NFL spread when betting on football? Not only do NFL spreads remain king when it comes to wagering on pro football, it is a favorite in online sports betting among pro bettors and beginners alike.
Also known as NFL football lines and as betting “sides,” a common misconception is that sportsbooks set the pro football spread as a predicted margin of victory. It’s actually the number oddsmakers predict would be a good balance between people who want to bet the underdog and those who want to bet the favorite.
For example, a negative value (-11.5) next to a football team means that they are favored by that many points. So you must deduct 11.5 points from their score to determine if they won the game or not.
On the other hand, a positive value on the same game (+11.5) means the underdog starts with an 11.5-point lead before the game even begins. In NFL online betting, the favorite must win by 12 points or more to cover the NFL spread. The dog is able to lose by 11 points and still cover the spread.
When you see a moneyline value associated with the spread, it is the percentage amount you must pay in order to book the bet. Also known as the juice or vig, if you see NFL Vegas odds of -11.5 (-115), it means you have to bet $115 to win $100 — a 15 percent commission for the sportsbook. The underdog may see a value such as +11.5 (+105), which means you’ll have to bet $100 to win $105 if your team successfully covers.
If you see the line move, let’s say from -9 on Tuesday to -10.5 on Friday, this is known as a line move. It occurs when there is a surplus of bettors wagering on the same side of the game, so NFL betting sites move the line and spread to balance the action.
That means encouraging more people to bet the other way by making the line more appealing for the upcoming Sunday night football game. This reduces risk for the sportsbook, who wants to have an equal handle on each team.
NFL moneyline betting continues to gain popularity as many begin to understand the value of moneyline bets, especially in betting the long shots. In this type of bet, your team needs only to win the game “straight up” (SU), and there is no requirement for how many points they need to win by. The juice is the only number you really have to pay attention to with moneyline, where the negative value indicates the favorite (-140) and a positive one means underdog (+120).
For example, if you want to pick that -140 favorite, you’ll need to risk $140 in order to win $100. To bet on the +120 underdog we mentioned above, you’ll need to bet $100 to win $120 if the dog wins outright.

Also known as NFL OVER/UNDER betting, the total is the number set by sportsbooks that estimates the total amount of points scored by both teams combined. The betting favorite is displayed with a minus sign (-) followed by a number. That number represents the amount of money that has to be bet in order to win $100. The underdog, however, is listed with a plus sign (+) in front of a number. That number indicates how much you would win when you bet $100.
An NFL money line of +200 means that you would win $200 on a successful $100 wager. That's also equivalent to fractional odds of 2/1, decimal odds of 3.00, and implied odds of 33.33 percent. A negative money line of -200 means that you would have to wager $200 in order to win $100.
If the NFL odd is negative (-), it means that outcome is more likely to occur and making a bet on that outcome would payout less than the amount you wagered. If the NFL odd is positive (+), it means that outcome is less likely to occur and it would pay out more than the amount you wagered.
