Not just any guitar pedal. It’s the Boss MT-2, aka the Metal Zone. It’s been a giant meme in the guitar community for over 20 years for various reasons and was considered to be the worst pedal of all time until recently when it turned out to be quite useful when used the right way.
I love it for the absolutely ridiculous distorted sound it provides and its meme status, but a lot of people strongly dislike it, even today

The “right way” being pretty much anything other than a guitar. It made a guitar sound like TV static, but it made a bass sound like the angry roar of an malevolent demon-god.
They should've used a Korg Miku for extra lulz.
edit: I just priced a Miku and $500 to $1000?! WTF
I got one in 1991 because the parametric range made it the most versatile pedal on the market. Used it loads. Never heard of the hate until about 2 years ago. People are weird.
I know a professional guitarist who keeps one on his board as a joke. He keeps it plugged in but outside his signal chain and he "turns it on" and the most random moments just to confuse any guitar player who's looking at what pedals he uses.
One time a dude came up to him asking him how he got such an amazing clean sound using a Metal Zone
As a guitar player, the fact that it is an MT-2 has been the shitpost of the year for me

I'm blown away by hearing the MT-2 was hated, this was the bread and butter for bands from the 2000s era
I fucking loved my metal zone when I was a teenager. Made me believe I sounded almost tolerable.
That’s my favorite pedal of all time! I’ve got a big Boss pedalboard now but I still can’t get that feel of the MT-2.
