Outdoor Antenna
Ok, my friend, you’ve decided that you want to receive an HD-TV signal without the hassle and expense of going with one of the major providers. Now that you’re free of the constraints of a monthly package you’ll be able to choose exactly what you receive. The problem is you don’t know what hardware to select to make it happen. Sound familiar?
If this sounds just like the situation you’re in at the moment, then my review is undoubtedly for you. I’ll talk you through 15 of the best options on the market today so that you know precisely what’s on offer. I like to think that I know a thing or two about the world of antennas. Hopefully, you’ll find a few nuggets of information that make finding your perfect new piece of kit that little bit easier. Let’s dive right in…

As I know you love to talk tech, then you’ll undoubtedly have spent many an afternoon talking about these guys. RCA is a company that comes with a big reputation so I couldn’t wait to see what they had to offer.
With a range of up to 70-miles, they’re undoubtedly competitive on this list. This allows you to travel to the middle of nowhere and still get a 1080p signal. Ideal if you live in a rural location, love to travel, or just want to keep plenty in reserve. It also gives you the added flexibility to be able to take it with you if you move without having to upgrade. I really liked this because it means that you can use the same piece of hardware over and over.
A true HD signal should be 1080p which is precisely what the RCA gives you. Too often I’ve seen inferior products call a watchable picture HD. It’s just not the case. There’s a definitive standard when it comes to picture quality. Make sure you’re fluent in it so that you know what you’re buying. One thing’s for sure; you won’t be disappointed by the ANT751R in this respect.
UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency. The secret to a great antenna is that it needs to filter out the background noise while capturing the signal. One way that this can be done is to introduce a reflector that bounces the radio waves. In my experience, you’ll struggle to see a better-matched design than the one the ANT751R uses. It is’s certainly bringing a lot of hardware to the table.
The ease of the installation is something I think is something you’re going to like. The coax comes with it and is more than long enough for most outdoor uses. With no tools required all you’ll have to do is stick it where you want it. Now that’s the kind of tech that I like guys! Simple, robust, and well thought out. If you like to tick all those boxes, then I would take a closer look at this offering from RCA.
So this is a name that you’ll have heard plenty about if you’ve already shopped around. But if you are completely new to this exciting area of tech let’s take a closer look and see what we’re dealing with.
One thing that you’ll find when you set up your new antenna is that you can get all sorts of interference from mobile devices like phones and tablets. The 3G and 4G signals they send and receive will play havoc with the quality of your TV reception. That is precisely why I was delighted at how useful the built-in LTE filter was. By having such a simple yet powerful feature supplied as standard you know that you’re getting the full package.
Another great feature is that it’s an omnidirectional antenna. That means, it can receive from any direction and you won’t have to point and reorientate it to try and maintain a strong signal. This makes it the perfect choice for an RV in my opinion. Every time you pull over and decide to put your feet up your antenna will be pointing in a completely different direction. By not having to retune it every time you drive you’ll save yourself a lot of time and effort.
I liked how easy it was to install and the fact that I didn’t need any tools. If you’re anything like me, then you’ll find it super annoying when you have to buy a special tool you’re never going to use again. With no such issues to report, I think you’ll have it up in under a minute.
If you love to travel in your RV as I do, then the range is something you’re certainly going to want to pay attention to. At an impressive 65-miles, I think you’re going to be as impressed as I was by the Antop. That gives you more than enough flexibility to drive to the middle of nowhere and get away from it all. Perfect for the traveler who likes to travel in comfort.
This is a product I was really interested in getting my hands on because it made a few bold claims. I love nothing more than putting specs to the test so let’s take a look at how it got on.
I liked the slogan here because it does exactly what it says. By keeping things simple and offering clear instructions and installation tips, there isn’t much that can go wrong. If you’re not necessarily a big lover of tech, then I think you’ll like the simple approach. They go back to basics in impressive fashion. By showing things can be simple, I was impressed by how easy it was to use.
Surge protection is also known as lightning protection if you haven’t heard of it before. You know how Ben Franklin used to fly a kite during storms to attract lightning? Well, that’s precisely what your antenna unintentionally does: acts as a lightning rod. By having on board protection that stops dangerous surges in their tracks, I think they’ve covered it all. This is great as it will protect your fuses and breakers by isolating any high amperage discharges.
Coaxial cable (or coax as we call it in the trade) is what connects your antenna to your TV. By supplying over 32 m of the stuff these folks have made indoor and outdoor mounting possible. That is an incredibly nice touch in my opinion. It allows you to use it in a variety of different settings so that you can have a lot of flexibility.
I love driving out in my RV and setting up camp for the weekend. Who doesn’t? One thing that can really grind on me though is if I’m stuck with lousy reception. With a range of up to 160-miles and a working frequency of 174 – 860 MHz, there’s plenty in reserve. It makes getting a great HD picture that little bit easier when you want to relax and chill. Ideal if you want to get away from it all, which I know you do now and then!

This is a name that I hadn’t heard all that much of so I was certainly intrigued. One thing that really caught my eye was the number of new features they have. With a whole host of stuff to tell you about let’s get straight to it!
The Anti UV Coating is something that I thought was really clever. UV gives a subtle type of interference that plays havoc with your picture quality. By developing a robust coating that is highly scratch resistant, I think they’re really onto something. I can’t say exactly how much of a difference it made without longer-term testing, but all signs were good! There are, however a few more tricks up the 1 by One’s sleeve that you should know about.
Wind load can play havoc with outdoor antennas too. There’s nothing more irritating than buying something expensive only for it to blow off. By opting for a compact design, 1 by One have effectively, eradicated the issue. What I like that they’ve done it without compromising on the gain or impedance matching of the antenna.
If you live in an area that always seems to be in the grip of winter, then snow proofing is super important. This is a little different to simple waterproofing. When you’re proofing for snow, you need an antenna that can still impedance match when buried. That is something I was quite impressed by. The materials also need to be robust across a broad range of temperatures. There were no signs of cracking or brittleness which is another definite plus point for me.
As with a few of the other entries on this rundown, I’m going to draw your attention to the reception angle. 360 reception is another name for omnidirectional. It’s really important because it means you won’t have to reposition your antenna. I found no obvious angular sensitivity which is a tick in the box from me. If you love to drive then, this is certainly something you need to account for.

I’m always intrigued to try something new, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this. The motorized rotation is worth a look all by itself, but more on that later… Let’s take a look at how this piece of kit compared when it came to the ultimate range test!
A range of up to 150 miles is very impressive indeed. You don’t even have to be in the same state as the tower to pick up the signal which is fantastic. If you love to travel or you live in a remote location, then it is ideal. You may also like the flexibility it gives you should you decide to move in the future.
Not every antenna needs to be omnidirectional. In fact what I like about this design is it gives you another degree of freedom to play with. By being able to point your antenna remotely, you’ll be able to optimize your picture. This is a clever piece of engineering, although I’d like to run longer tests to assess the stepper motor durability.
It’s the little touches that make all the difference, isn’t it? With a free mount included as standard, there’s a whole lot to like about this one! It’s easy to put up and looks like it’s built to last which certainly put a smile on my face. Ideal if you’re going to mount it high up where it could catch the wind. Just be sure you have the right tools before you get things started. That way you’ll have it up in a couple of minutes or less!
The wireless remote is the final thing I want to draw your attention to. It’s a nice touch because it means you don’t need to shop separately for a universal remote. I liked this because it ensures you get a package that works without the hassle of assembling it yourself. It also means you can start watching the day it arrives! A true bonus from the world of tech if ever there were one!

GE has a great history of devising antennas and aerials that get the job done. That’s why I was particularly excited to give their latest model a try. Let’s take a look at a few of its features so you can hear what I thought about them.
Anyone who says the Yagi style is a design of the past is very much mistaken. What GE has done is take a classic design and give it a real boost. Perfect for creating a good looking piece of hardware that marries performance and style. If you love the look of it, then I’d certainly suggest reading on!
With a lot of antennas offering HD and 1080p as standard, you need something more to stand apart. The 33685 comes 4K ready which means it’s instantly future proofed. This is really handy in my opinion because it drastically reduces the chances of an imminent upgrade being needed. By being able to watch the new class of Ultra HD channels for free, you’ll be onto a winner from day one.
Another trick some antennas use is advertising themselves as 1080p receivers while only capturing compressions. The problem with this is that when you come to upscale the signal, you’ll lose some of the clarity. GE play no such tricks and capture nothing but pure uncompressed 1080p. I really like this because it means you’re buying exactly what you expect. There’ll be no fiddling to try and improve it because it captures all the data needed for a great picture.
At 70-miles the reception is highly competitive even on this list of the very best on the market. If you live in a rural location, love to travel, or just want more channels, then go for it. There are no tricks with the range numbers either. They can be achieved in virtually all weathers, and you don’t need to live somewhere pancake flat. That is ideal for giving you the peace of mind that your signal won’t disappear the moment clouds gather overhead.

It’s certainly a catchy name, but how does the hardware stack up when put under the microscope? Let’s jump straight in and take a look, so you know how much you get for your money!
At a stunning 150 miles, you’ll be able to pick up very every channel known to man. Even on this list of superstars, you’ll find it hard to top that figure. Because of the other advances in this classic Yagi design, the signal is also surprisingly weatherproof. That is great if you live in an area where you can expect all four seasons in one afternoon.
The wireless remote allows you to quickly and easily align your antenna for optimal reception. This is really great because it will enable you to make the fine adjustments without getting off the couch! With a high gain and a wide bandwidth, you’ll be able to capture any HD signal you like! Omnidirectional antennas are great too, but it’s nice to have the option to make a few tweaks.
There are two main aspects to the setup: mechanical and frequency scanning. The mount is very easy (even I managed it), and it only takes a couple of minutes to get it up. The really great bit, however, is the frequency scanning. By automatically covering the whole VHF and UHF broadcast spectrums it makes finding your favorite shows dead easy. Do you love tech that just works straight out of the box? If so then this has to be a definite contender to spend your money on.
Another simple extra the manufacturer has added, is what I call dual-support. The antenna can support 2 TVs at the same time which means you don’t have to go shopping for a splitter. That is incredibly handy if you want one signal for the living room and another for the kids’ room. There’s also no increase in the noise floor due to this approach either. This means there won’t be any cross-channel interference or general degradation in the signal quality.
I’m always on the lookout for new names which is why this entry had no issues making my list. The Yagi style antenna design has life in it yet so let’s take a closer look at the specs.
150-mile ranges are often quoted, but do they stand up to scrutiny? With a whole host of new features and advances in geometry, this antenna is impressive. Clouds and rainfall can change the refractive index and disperse the signal you’re trying to receive. Fortunately, the reflector at the rear of the unit does more than enough to compensate. From what I’ve seen the range spec is real and well worth a closer look!
One potential drawback of this class of antenna is that they’re not strictly omnidirectional. As they’re based more on a dipole model, they have a degree of angular sensitivity to their reception. This is why the motorized rotation is a convenient feature. With the click of a button, you can scan the antenna to optimize the picture quality. Perfect if you never want to have to climb up a ladder again!
The gain (or more strictly the gain-bandwidth product) is what allows you to amplify the signal. The issue is that some lesser amps will introduce a lot of noise and give you a noisy signal. By using a low noise floor amp with a wide dynamic reserve Ailuki get around that issue nicely. If you want an aerial, you can use indoors and outdoors then this has to be on your shortlist in my opinion.
Every antenna will claim to be able to receive 1080p because it’s the new standard quality people expect. I’m pleased to say that with Ailuki this isn’t a marketing gimmick; it delivers. If you want an antenna that will offer stunning picture quality in all weather then take a closer look. You also have the option of choosing between indoor and outdoor mounting. Whatever gets you the best picture quality at the end of the day, my friend!

This is a name with a big reputation so you can imagine why I wanted to try it out. The design is very eye-catching and is just the sort of tech that I love. Let’s see how it faired…
In the summer it’s relatively easy to get a robust reception, but in the colder months, all that changes. Thick clouds can knock down signals and cause channels to disappear. If you’re unfortunate enough to get a lot of thunderstorms, then the static can also play havoc with your signal. What ClearStream have done is create an antenna that works in real-world conditions. All of their specs seem to be field tested rather than best possible lab test results. I find this practical approach really reassuring.
At more than 60-miles the reception holds its own on this list. What is most impressive is how robust that reception is. I’d much rather have a shorter more stable range than a huge range that drops out. If you want your tech to, just work, then this is well worth a closer look.
The clever combination of both UHF and VHF allows for a robust signal in virtually any condition. So, what’s extra pleasing is that they’ve also made it 4K ready! That way you have an antenna that is future proofed. As more and more broadcasters make this their standard output you won’t have to upgrade. Once again; a promising idea if you just want your tech to work when you need it to.
The final thing that catches the eye is the innovative design. The condensed antenna designs can cause difficulties but not in this case. All of the channels are well isolated which causes a low noise floor and minimal interference. Add to that the high gain-bandwidth product and you have a rich spectral density on offer. If the jargon isn’t for you, then this means you’ll get a lot of channels with crystal clear pictures! At the end of the day, it’s what we all want, isn’t it?
On the face of it, this looks like a brute force approach if ever there was one! That said, there’s always a time and a place for a design that really muscles in and takes charge. Let’s see how the CM-4228HD stacked up against some of the more compact models I’ve shared with you.
This may sound like something to be afraid of, but, it, isn’t. The Channel Master is essentially a Yagi antenna that’s been laid out in a grid. The idea here is to capture more of the incoming signals by using an array geometry. That, in turn, should mean that you need a slightly less powerful amp. Because the amplification stage is one of the primary sources of noise; you should get a clearer picture.
Obviously, an array design can’t be genuinely omnidirectional. The turning radius of 2-feet is as small as an array of this size can offer, but note the manual element. Many other unidirectional antennas have integrated stepper motors to turn them. Because you’ll need to turn it by hand, it’s worth mounting it somewhere with easy access.
The combination of VHF & UHF works nicely and allows the Channel Master to extend its reception. There’s also the option to pick up FM if you want to go old school and listen to the radio. Not something everyone is going to clamber for but certainly not something you’d turn down. This goes some way to making up for the manual element involved in the alignment stage.
There are options to add more powerful amps and additional splitters to your setup. While I fully understand that you may not want to do this, it’s nice to have the option. If you are a tech guy like me then building your own rig can be a great way to learn. Channel Master also supply all the modules needed so you can be sure that interfacing won’t be an issue. If you don’t fancy looking at noise floor specs through the stuff it comes with works great too.
I’ve heard a lot about the anti-cloud tech that the Antcloud brings to the table. With that said let’s skip the usual intro and get straight down to the specs!
Clouds cause havoc with your reception because they knock down signals in a couple of different ways. They can cause dispersion via a wavelength dependent refractive index. They can produce high degrees of attenuation through RF absorption. And the list goes on! By creating a compact design that’s geared towards compensating for these real-world issues they’ve done a great job. That means you can trust the specs as they’re all field tested, not just lab estimates.
I get annoyed by antennas that come with poor quality coax to cut costs. The grounded shielding, in this case, allows all 26ft to transmit with minimal added noise. Issues like crosstalk and noise spikes at specific frequencies are largely eliminated. For those of you that just want to watch TV: your signal won’t randomly drop out due to low-quality parts!
The frequency range is impressive and is a result of the spectral purity of the amplifier. Because of the broad range of frequencies, it is essential to use an amp that adds minimal noise. This is exactly what the Antcloud does in the 87.5 – 230 MHz, and 470 – 700 MHz ranges. Ideal for those of you looking to maximize the number of stations you can receive off of a single tune.
The reception is genuinely 360-degrees which is perfect for two reasons. Firstly it offers you the best chance of a stable reception in all weathers. And secondly, it means that you can have a compact design that you’ll barely notice if you mount it externally. This is always worth considering because a large array antenna can look a little unsightly. Additionally, the gain is higher enough that you can install it indoors. That is great if you live in a rental property and aren’t allowed to mount it outside.
This one has a catchy name and comes with a unique geometry. Let’s take a look and see if this unusual array geometry can compete with the more modern compact designs…
The array may have had its day in some people’s eyes, but I still love to put them through their paces. The idea is that you unfold the Yagi style antenna and create something that covers more space. This should then reduce the need for a reflector which can be a hard thing to design right. One drawback I can see though is that they’re not the most pleasing to the eye. If you want something unobtrusive, then you may be better off shopping around.
The 1080p reception is just what you’d expect, but I couldn’t find any mention of 4K capability. That’s not to say that it can’t do it. If you want something with maximum shelf life, you’ll want to find an antenna that is explicit about 4K. From my quick look, there’s not an easy way to tell if the materials and geometry can handle the higher quality signals.
This is not great in my opinion because as you’ll have guessed by now, it’s a real pet peeve of mine! Coax is needed to use the antenna, and a lot of people won’t know what they’re looking for. I’d rather it just came included because it will save people so much time and effort. If you buy it, make sure you get double shielded coax for best spectral purity.
The UHF range is marginally smaller than the others on this list. To be fair, this could just be a rounding issue with others rounding up to a nice attractive 700 MHz. That said, it’s worth checking that you can still get your favorite stations. If you can’t, then I’d suggest going for a higher bandwidth antenna. That is the only way to guarantee yourself the maximum number of channels and stations.
If you’re still a fan of Yagi antennas but want something a little more compact, then this will be of interest! The frequency range is undoubtedly impressive, but how does the rest of it stack up…
By receiving up to 900 MHz, the Phonetone is something of a dark horse on my list. You may expect one of the more modern designs to win in this category, but that’s not the case. The clever miniaturization and simple geometry work in harmony to work way up at 900 MHz. If you love to have maximum choice, then it comes recommended by yours truly.
The gain isn’t incredible, but it is fit for purpose. Remember that with antennas, it’s not always the case that more gain is better. The higher the gain, the higher noise floor of the amplifier. And therefore the higher the injected noise will be. This amplifier looks to be just right for this specific geometry so I wouldn’t lose sleep that it is only 8 dB.
N Type connectors are the connectors of choice for these frequencies, but be warned…
There are some other standards out there such as BNC or SMA. If you end up buying your own cable, this is something you’ll want to be aware of. Don’t try and save a few bucks with the kit; just buy a premade cable. Take it from someone who has tried for many an hour: they’re hard to make!
A professionally built cable will ensure the shielding is sufficiently grounded to reject most noise.
One area that I’m not overly enthusiastic about is the manual alignment. Most of the time you can just bolt an aerial on, and it’ll work fine. But as the weather changes you may want to adjust it if you suddenly lose your station. Because there’s no motor, you’re going to have to get the ladder out. Mount it within arm’s reach when you can, but if that’s not possible, then it may prove annoying over time.

What I like about efind is that they’re never afraid to do things differently. By taking the simple approach, they make sure that you only use the hardware you actually need. Let’s take a look at just how they’ve done it!
The onboard amplifier is a nice touch, but what I really like is they’re honest about when you need it. Too many suppliers add on a high gain amp to catch your eye; not these guys! The signal boosting is only every needed if you’re far away from the broadcast tower. It doesn’t magically get you loads more stations. Instead, it allows you to pick up weak ones but inherently adds a little noise to the picture. If you are close enough, then you just don’t need it. Simple!
Coax not being included is a real pet peeve of mine as you’ll have seen by now! What delights me about this product is it doesn’t come with a cheap cable. RG6 is the weapon of choice for those who just won’t compromise quality. It offers grounded shielding for minimal interference and crosstalk: just what you want!
The installation is straightforward because you get everything you need in the box. The washers and screws are all bagged up which makes things easy. As does the simple pictures in the instruction. Even I was able to get it up in under 5 minutes. Now if that doesn’t have you brimming with confidence, then I don’t know what will! Ideal for buyers who just want their tech to work and be usable straight out of the box.
Lightning strikes can be a real issue when you’re mounting your own aerial. Most of the time you’ll be fine, but when they’re not disaster can strike at any moment. The thing to remember is that your antenna will be powered off your home’s ring main. That means you’re not only risking your antenna if you skip over the issue of surge protection. With everything you need built-in, I expect you’ll never notice even the most severe storm outside!

Winegard seems like as good a brand as any to round off my list of 15 of the best the market has to offer! With a reputation that has been built up over the years, there’s plenty of reasons I was excited. Now, let’s start delving into the techie details!
A 70-mile range is pretty standard on this list as you’ll have seen by now. What is particularly impressive, however, is how they’ve added in reliability through innovative design. In even the densest rain storms I can remember I never saw any change in performance. That is great because it means that you will have plenty in reserve so that your antenna always gets the job done. Ideal if you just want to bolt it to the roof and never have to touch it again.
I know what you’re thinking: why’s he making a scene about this? 1 dB sounds so low that it’s not worth having. However, if you think that you’re wrong my friend! The quality of the amplifier, the noise floor, the gain-bandwidth product, and the matching pads are what really matters. The gain is exactly what you need because it’s integrated so efficiently with the rest of the device. You’re not wasting a single Watt which means you just need any stronger amplification.
I’m not just a lover of tech; I’m a lover of stylish tech too. When you’re having something in the living room or bolted to your roof it’s important it looks good. The elegant design the guys have come up with certainly ticks all the right boxes. What you’ll want to be careful of however is that you’re still happy with the overall performance. Take the time to read the specs. The range won’t be an issue if you’re a fan of rural living; you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve tested antennas, and suddenly my whole signal has cut out. So often this is due to the receiver compartment being flooded because the casing just isn’t up to the job. Because the Winegard is fully waterproof, you can even cover it with melting snow, and it’ll still do the job you need it to do!
