Spitting is the act of forcibly ejecting saliva or other substances from the mouth . The act is often done to get rid of unwanted or foul-tasting substances in the mouth, or to get rid of a large buildup of mucus . Spitting of small saliva droplets can also happen unintentionally during talking , especially when articulating ejective and implosive consonants .

Spitting in public is currently considered rude and a social taboo in many parts of the world including the West , while in some other parts of the world it is considered more socially acceptable.

Spitting upon another person, especially onto the face , is a global sign of anger , hatred , disrespect or contempt . It can represent a "symbolical regurgitation" or an act of intentional contamination. [1]

Social attitudes towards spitting have changed greatly in Western Europe since the Middle Ages . Then, frequent spitting was part of everyday life, and at all levels of society, it was thought ill-mannered to suck back saliva to avoid spitting. [ citation needed ] By the early 1700s, spitting had become seen as something which should be concealed, and by 1859 it had progressed to being described by at least one etiquette guide as "at all times a disgusting habit." Sentiments against spitting gradually transitioned from being included in adult conduct books to so obvious as to only appear in guides for children to not be included in conduct literature even for children "because most [Western] children have the spitting ban internalized well before learning how to read." [2]

Spittoons were used openly during the 19th century to provide an acceptable outlet for spitters. Spittoons became far less common after the influenza epidemic of 1918 , and their use has since virtually disappeared, though each justice of the Supreme Court of the United States continues to be provided with a personal cuspidor . [3]

In the first half of the 20th century the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, the precursor to the American Lung Association , and state affiliates had educational campaigns against spitting to reduce the chance of spreading tuberculosis . [4] According to the World Health Organization coughing, sneezing, or spitting, can spread tuberculosis. [5] The chance of catching a contagious disease by being spit on is low. [6]

After coffee cupping , tea tasting , and wine tasting , the sample is spit into a 'spit bucket' or spittoon.

There have been instances of spitting reported in the US, particularly from American men. [7] In Minnesota , instances have been reported from some young people. [8] [9] In Canada, spitting has been reported for cities such as Ottawa and Winnipeg . [10] [11]

Spitting has been attributed to some people [ further explanation needed ] from Asia-Pacific countries such as Bangladesh, [12] China, [13] [14] [15] India, [16] [17] Indonesia, [18] Myanmar, [19] [20] [21] Papua New Guinea, [22] Philippines, [23] [24] [25] South Korea, [26] [27] United Arab Emirates, [28] [29] and Vietnam. [30] [31] [32] The practice is often linked to betel chewing in many of those regions. [33] Spitting has also been reported in some parts of Africa, such as Ghana. [34]

There are some places where spitting is a competitive sport, with or without a projectile in the mouth. For example, there is a Guinness World Record for cherry pit spitting and cricket spitting , and there are world championships in Kudu dung spitting .

In rural parts of North India , it was customary in olden days for mothers to lightly spit at their children (usually to the side of the children rather than directly at them) to imply a sense of disparagement and imperfection that protects them from evil eye (or nazar ). [35] Excessive admiration, even from well-meaning people, is believed to attract the evil eye, so this is believed to protect children from nazar that could be caused by their own mothers' "excessive" love of them. [35] However, because of hygiene, transmission of disease and social taboos, this practice has waned and instead a black mark of kohl or kajal is put on the forehead or cheek of the child to ward off the evil eye. Adults use an amulet containing alum or chillies and worn on the body for this purpose. Sometimes, this is also done with brides and others by their loved ones to protect them from nazar .

Shopkeepers in the region used to sometimes make a spitting gesture on the cash proceeds from the first sale of the day (called bohni ), which is a custom believed to ward-off nazar from the business. [36]

Such a habit also existed in some Eastern European countries like Romania , and Moldova , although it is no longer widely practiced. People would gently spit in the face of younger people (often younger relatives such as grandchildren or nephews) they admire in order to avoid deochi , [37] an involuntary curse on the individual being admired or "strangely looked upon", [37] which is claimed to be the cause of bad fortune and sometimes malaise or various illnesses. [38] In Greece , it is customary to "spit" three times after making a compliment to someone, the spitting is done to protect from the evil eye. [39] This applies to all people, it is not just between mothers and children. The spitting is light and from a distance, so it is not actual spitting on the face et

A similar-sounding expression for verbal spitting occurs in modern Hebrew as "Tfu, tfu" (here, only twice), which some say that Hebrew-speakers borrowed from Russian. [40]

When a suspect in a criminal case is arrested, they will sometimes try to spit at their captors, which often causes a fear of infection by Hepatitis C and other diseases. Spit hoods are meant to prevent this.

Gleeking is the projection of saliva from the submandibular gland . It may happen deliberately or accidentally, particularly when yawning . If done deliberately, it can be regarded as a form of spitting.

From rumors of off-camera feuds to on-set romance to casting decisions, the conversation surrounding Olivia Wilde 's upcoming film Don't Worry Darling has taken on a life of its own. And now — spit?

As the cast of the film arrived at the Venice International Film Festival for its premiere Monday, photos and video clips began to flood the internet with both fans and critics dissecting every move.

What began as a "who is standing next to whom" and "who isn't making eye contact with whom" turned into a question of whether the movie's star Harry Styles spat on his costar Chris Pine ahead of the film's screening.

In a clip that began circulating the internet Monday night, Styles, 28, is seen taking his seat next to Pine — who notably is seated to the left of Wilde, 38.

As the "Watermelon Sugar" singer bends down to take his seat, his lips move before Pine, 42, quickly looks down and stops clapping — which some believe is his acknowledging that the singer has just spit. Pine then shakes his head slightly and appears to giggle before reaching down and grabbing his sunglasses that are placed between his legs and continues to look amused.

Reps for Pine and Styles did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

As the clip circulated, the internet debated just exactly what occurred. One Twitter user posted a GIF made from the clip along with the message , "He 100% spit on Chris Pine ."

Another user wrote , " #HarryStyles appears to spit on Chris Pine i won't sleep until i know the truth," while a third tweeted , "Someone needs to begin a full fledged investigation into what happened on that don't worry darling set … wdym harry styles spitting on chris pine on NATIONAL TELEVISION?"

Some internet users did just that and have since jumped to Styles' defense online, giving another explanation to what happened.

" Chris pine just wondered where his sunglasses were after the applause," Twitter user @cinemazietgeist wrote of her interpretation of the footage . "And he zoned out (likes he's been doing all day) and realised it's in his lap. So I am sorry to say harry styles did not spit on him."

The same user later shared a slowed-down clip of the moment , writing, "And this vid shows nothing left his mouth."

The viral moment came after the cast, which includes Styles, Wilde, Pine, Florence Pugh , Gemma Chan , Sydney Chandler and Nick Kroll posed together on the red carpet .

Pugh, 26, had earlier sat out of the film's press conference while on a flight from the Dune: Part Two set and Wilde fielded a question about rumors of a "falling out" between herself and Pugh .

The latter responded to the question, "Florence is a force, and we are so grateful that she's able to make it tonight despite being in production on Dune ."

"I know, as a director, how disruptive it is to lose an actor even for a day, so I'm very grateful to her, to Denis Villeneuve for helping us," Wilde continued. "And we're really thrilled we'll get to celebrate her work tonight. I can't say enough how honored I am to have her as our lead. She's amazing in the film."

"As for all the endless tabloid gossip and all the noise out there, I mean, the internet feeds itself," she added. "I don't feel the need to contribute. It's sufficiently well nourished."

The panel's moderator then skipped over a question about Shia LaBeouf , following a leaked video that Wilde allegedly sent to LaBeouf, 36, went viral on social media and he claimed he quit the movie and wasn't fired by her.

In the clip, Wilde — who previously claimed she fired LaBeouf from Don't Worry Darling to preserve a non-aggressive atmosphere on set — asked LaBeouf not to depart the movie. Wilde referred to Pugh as "Miss Flo" in the video and alluded to unresolved tension between Pugh and LaBeouf. (Styles ultimately replaced him in the role.)

"I feel like I'm not ready to give up on this yet, and I too am heartbroken and I want to figure this out," Wilde said in the video. "You know, I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo, and I wanna know if you're open to giving this a shot with me, with us."

The filmmaker added, "If she really commits, if she really puts her mind and heart into it at this point and if you guys can make peace — and I respect your point of view, I respect hers — but if you guys can do it, what do you think? Is there hope? Will you let me know?"

In her Variety cover story last month, however, Wilde praised the "extraordinary" actress and called "tabloid media" a " tool to pit women against one another and to shame them."

Don't Worry Darling hits theaters Sept. 23.

Chris Pine is breaking his silence on the viral moment in which many believe they saw Harry Styles spitting on him at the Venice International Film Festival .

In a statement exclusive to PEOPLE, a rep for Pine, 42, says of the feud buzz surrounding the actor and his Don't Worry Darling costar, 28, "This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation."

"Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine ," the rep continues. "There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist."

A rep for Styles has not commented.

The moment occurred Monday during the premiere of Don't Worry Darling in Venice, Italy, after which a clip began circulating the internet in which Styles is seen taking his seat next to Pine — who notably is seated to the left of the movie's director (and Styles' girlfriend), Olivia Wilde .

As the "Watermelon Sugar" singer bends down to take his seat, his lips move before Pine quickly looks down and stops clapping — which some believed was the latter's acknowledging that the singer had just spit.

Pine then shakes his head slightly and appears to giggle before reaching down and grabbing his sunglasses that are placed between his legs and continues to look amused.

As the clip began to go viral, the internet debated just exactly what occurred. One Twitter user posted a GIF made from the clip along with the message , "He 100% spit on Chris Pine ."

Others jumped to Styles' defense online, giving another explanation to what happened. " Chris pine just wondered where his sunglasses were after the applause," Twitter user @cinemazietgeist wrote of her interpretation of the footage .

"And he zoned out (likes he's been doing all day) and realised it's in his lap. So I am sorry to say harry styles did not spit on him," the latter user added.

The same user later shared a slowed-down clip of the moment , writing, "And this vid shows nothing left his mouth."

Styles and Florence Pugh star in Don't Worry Darling as Jack and Alice, a young couple living in the seemingly perfect company town of Victory, California in the 1950s. As cracks begin to surface in their idyllic community, Alice becomes obsessed with the nature of her husband's work.

Don't Worry Darling opens in theaters Sept. 23.

In footage from the Venice Film Festival on Monday, now widely circulated on social media , Styles is seen approaching Pine to take a seat next to the actor at a screening of the thriller. As Styles quickly moves to his seat, he makes a subtle "puh" motion with is mouth, suggesting he may have spit. Pine looks down at his lap, pauses his applause, then shakes his head and grins as if there may have been some kind of joke between the two stars.
Others argue that nothing can be seen coming out of Styles mouth.
CNN has reached out to representatives for the actors for comment.
"Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine," a rep for Pine told People magazine. "There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist."
It's the most recent movie-campaign moment to raise speculation things are not all love between those involved with the project.
There were, however, plenty of smiles from the cast at Monday's festivities.
Pine was seen on the red carpet, charmingly taking photos with a disposable camera of the film's star, Florence Pugh. Styles planted a friendly kiss on co-star Nick Kroll during a lengthy standing ovation for the film after the screening.

People on social media were quick to point out there wasn't much public interaction between "Don't Worry Darling" director Olivia Wilde and Pugh, but Wilde had nothing but praise for the actress.
"Florence is a force," Wilde said a press conference earlier Monday. "I can't say enough how honored I am to have her as our lead. She's amazing in the film."

The director was asked about reports she and Pugh have experienced a falling out.
"As for all the endless tabloid gossip and all the noise out there, I mean, the internet feeds itself," Wilde said. "I don't feel the need to contribute. I think it's sufficiently well-nourished."
Indeed. During that same press conference, Pine appeared to be distracted at times, which led Twitter to dub his appearance there as "Chris Pine astral projecting."
