You might know them better as “ball gags'' but that’s just one type of gag on the market. (Yes, there are lots.) Below, you'll find everything you need to know re: gags. Enjoy!
Taylor Sparks, an erotic educator and founder of online intimacy shop Organic Loven , explains that a gag is...well, exactly what it sounds like: An object that’s placed in a partner’s mouth to put them in a submissive position and limit them from talking.
If you want to get more specific: “A gag ball is a round ball [that can be] made of either rubber, silicone, or plastic. It has two straps that go around the head to secure it. It sits behind the teeth, keeping their mouth open during bondage or other forms of BDSM role play.”
Let's just say there's lots, and lots, and lots of versatility. For starters, there are breathable and non-breathable gags. “The balls can be solid or have holes to assist with breathing," says Sparks.
They also come in different dimensions for larger or smaller mouths. As a rule of thumb: “You want the ball gag to be large enough to prevent them from talking, but not so small that they can talk. The purpose is to have them in this submissive position.”
But like we said before, gags come in many different shapes and sizes—and not just in the shape of balls. There are ball gags, bit gags, open mouth gags, harness gags, dildo gags, etc.
“Most of the differences will be with the design of the straps coming in silicone, leather, or a fabric,” Sparks says. "But some gags are shaped like horse bits, penises, have attached nipple clamps, or just an O-shaped metal ring to keep your submissive’s mouth open.”
With any form of BDSM play (or sexual experience in general), there’s stuff to discuss and rules to establish before you begin. First things first: You need 100 percent enthusiastic consent. “Getting full consent in the form of a ‘fuck yeah’ and not a ‘we’ll see’ is the type of agreement that you want," says Sparks.
Another topic of conversation before playtime should be aftercare . “In the initial discussion, ask your partner what type of aftercare they would like to receive once you have finished the role play or scene. Some people like to be held, others need a blanket as they may experience a chill from all of the adrenaline, while others just need a glass of water and a few minutes to re-center themselves,” she says.
Next? Discuss safe actions and not words (since your partner and/or submissive will not be able to speak while gagged). Some suggestions: If the gagged partner’s hands are free, Sparks suggests that they use one, two, or three fingers to tap you to express an “I need a break from this scene” or “stop immediately” or “I’m okay, continue.”
If they’re tied up, she recommends giving them a squeaky toy to hold and squeeze one, two, or three times instead.
“As the one in the dominant position, it’s important to check in on your partner frequently and not get caught up in what you are focused on like spanking, flogging, or humiliation,” Sparks warns. “Never leave someone with a gag alone or not without a straight unobstructed view of them, and the same is true of someone tied up. You want to be able to release them immediately if they can’t breathe or have an anxiety attack. We don't always know what may trigger someone until we are right in the middle of a role play, so it’s best to stay close.”
Last but definitely not least, Sparks says to remember that the person gagged won’t be able to breathe through their mouths, so they need a clear passageway through their nostrils at all times. That’s why she advises against using gags when the receiver has a cold, the sniffles, a sinus infection, or even an upset stomach.
Sparks says gags are for someone who wants to try or indulge further into a submissive position or role. “Giving up your control and/or power can be stimulating both mentally and sexually to some,” she says. “Just the opposite for the one in the dominant position: Having someone trust you enough to voluntarily give up their control knowing that you will keep them safe and be responsible is also a big ego boost if not sexually arousing."
Basically, sexual kinks and fetishes do not need to be explained so long as consent is always involved and it gives you pleasure.
Start by using the ball gag for only 15 minutes at a time. Then, you can increase the time as you both become more comfortable, says Sparks.
And if a ball gag is too intimidating for you, start with a bit gag. "It will put less pressure on extending your jaw," says Sparks.
Lastly, for those experienced with gagging, Sparks says you can add additional sensory deprivation by adding a blindfold, handcuffs , or nipple clamps for some extra sensation. Above all, just have fun with it and do what feels good for you and your partner.

SAFETY NOTE: Always use the ball with a strap through it to prevent it
getting lodged in the throat and always make sure the person gagged is
not left alone.

The following Leather colors are in
limited supply and we won't be gettign more: ALL of the metalllic colors
except Gold and Silver; Yellow, and Bubble Gum Pink.

They are softer then they look. Our
customers have reported being able to keep them in the mouth for longer
then many other balls used. I know the models I have worked with have
surprised me how long they could keep the ball in their mouth - the
sessions were usually over before they asked to have it come out. The
softness of the ball has been selected for optimum average human use. We
have been told canines like them also, however they are considered a
choking hazard.

These ball gags use an FDA approved for human insertion
category of medical grade
(USP class VI) silicone material for the balls and the standard Leather and
PVC rubber straps can be removed, which makes cleaning them easier. The
balls are purpose made for human use. Please note the Gold, Silver, and
Pearl colorant are
technically not USP class VI, however apparently they either got certified for a
higher (better) classification or only contain materials the FDA
considers acceptable as a food additive, so we are good with that.
Note though that the balls themselves are not certified medical grade,
because that certification would cost too much and the FDA does not
certify Sex toys of any kind, we just use material
that could be certified if we could.
We recommend that Gags should be one person items only and thus sell them
"AS IS".
Any implied warranty
of merchantability or fitness is for use as a ball with a buckled strap as a
ball gag in the mouth between consenting adult humans for duration not to exceed
1 hour, with open nasal passages (no illness or other medical issues) in the
presence of another attentive human and the ball purchased fits comfortably in
the mouth with no jaw complaints. The leather (or other material) strap should
be checked before each use to make sure it is free of tears and is cabable of
pulling the ball from the mouth if needed.

Regular Black Satin Finish Leather Strap. A straight
black leather with a Satin finish. Excellent choice for Photographers who want a
very dark looking strap. (SR-BG0054)
Synthetic Material Straps (SR-BG060) The material has a
very leather like look to it (at least like the regular leather I use) . It is
water resistant, dishwater safe*, with a nylon webbing inserted to minimize bite
through safety and is edged for comfort. It is however stiffer than leather, so
that can be an issue. Unlike the PVC, it is made from a known food grade safe
material.

**=While it will work for a ball gag strap the leather is a little
thinner than I would like and that may cause some discomfort when worn.

The straps are made to order, the
default size fits most people, but will have 7 or 9 holes depending on
buckle. Custom straps will have 3 or 5 holes (or more upon request)
To measure we recommend using a
piece of thick string or yarn and measuring with the mouth open and then laying
the string down onto a ruler to determine the needed strap size (length is
longer than size).

For which size ball is recommended
(with the caveat this is only an educated guess):

Ball diameter should not exceed open mouth Height measurement by
more then 1/8th of an inch. Best is the diameter is at or below open
mouth height. (measure bottom of top teeth to top of bottom teeth wide
open).

Note:
If measurement is smaller than 1.5" or 40mm, recommend ball should be
1/8" (3mm) larger.
If larger than 2.5" or 60mm recommend 1/8 to 1/4" (3 to 5mm) size
smaller.
Reason: The smaller balls have more give, the larger balls less give.

Reduce size if the gagee might have any jaw problems.

SHIPPING:
Oct 2018 update: As items get updated to shopping cart, shipping should
work for both Domestic (USA) and International shipping, until then for

Ball Gag Orders take from 1-3 business days to make and ship on average.
Thursday orders are generally going to be the longest time to get an
order out. Other items we have depend on the item.

RETURNS:
If the package is unopened and the seal intact, I can take the item back
for return or refund, however, If I did not make a mistake, I can not
refund shipping portion and shipping will have to be paid by the
customer for any exchanges. If the seal is not present or broken I can
not take back for resell.

More Background:
The balls are now made in the U.S.A. by Longwatcher
and thus Pleasure Paradox. Our original source passed away in Apr 2012 and
we were unable to get more. We had looked for balls that met our standards so we
could provide custom straps allowing for a set that is matching in every part.
No source we fully trusted was available, so we found a medical parts company in
the USA willing to make them to our specifications and until we run out is part
of what we have for sale
these days. We took over production ourselves in Summer of 2020 when
they first announced a price increase and then corporately decided to no longer
support low and medium rate production orders (which would be us), so we got the
equipment and are now making them ourselves. We think you will not find a better quality ball in the
world for a ball gag of this style. We are not saying we are the best,
just no one better.

Cleaning:
The ball itself can be cleaned in boiling water or using rubbing or isopropyl
alcohol. The alcohol is recommended for routine cleaning. Make sure to wash off
the alcohol before putting mouth. The leather strap
however has to be treated as any leather product is, but since the strap can be
removed it makes it easy to treat separately. The PVC straps are residential
dishwasher safe, although borderline industrial dishwasher.

Sterilization:
The ball itself can be medically sterilized in an autoclave, in an oven at up to
550 degrees F (only greater than 275 degrees F is suggested), soaked in bleach,
boiled in water or soaked in rubbing or isopropyl alcohol. The ball may yellow
slightly or get harder over time and repeated heat treatments will speed this
process up slightly, but to date (over decades of use) no chemical breakdown has
been noted (meaning the balls should remain safe to use for decades. The balls
use an FDA approved medical grade material (USP Class VI) in the manufacture and
no chemicals are added that affect their medical grade qualities (exceptions for
Pearl and SIlver). Note though
that the balls are not shipped sterile and are likely to have been handled
during packaging.

Trivia:
K for black and M for Purple are used because CMYK is a photographer's term,
which Longwatcher is and M=Magenta, which Purple is closest to Magenta and K is
for Black or the black/white intensity value. A is used for gold as in "Au"
because we are reserving G for green. Pearl got "L" because too many other P's
and L was available.
