Sex education isn't something many would describe as fun, or even educational for that matter.
Learning about the birds and the bees from a young age, we're taught more about the biology of it all. We know how our reproductive organs operate, but we don't really go too into detail about the actual act of sex . And don't even get us started on the sparsity of sex education for the LGBTQIA community .
The point is, we can all do better at educating ourselves (and even our kids ) about the subject. One easy way to do that is by watching a few movies . We're not talking those old school flicks they made you watch back in the day, but actual movies and docs that are meant to offer more knowledge on sex.

Based on the article "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate" by Mark O'Brien , the movie follows O'Brien (a poet paralyzed from the neck down) and a sex surrogate her hires to take his virginity. The film dives into their relationship, all while educating you about sex along the way. For starters, if you never knew what a sex surrogate was, you'll find out now.
Sex(Ed): The Movie delves into the sex education films we all watched growing up and what we didn't learn from them. Many participants in this documentary reveal their hilarious and slightly embarrassing sex education stories, which will have you laughing until you cry. We all have those tales. More importantly, it shines a light on the importance of discussing more than the biological topics of sex with kids and even adults.
Starring Haley Joel Osment as a detention teacher, Osment's character begins to realize the kids aren't all that educated when it comes to sex. So, he takes it upon himself to teach them about the birds and the bees the right way. It's a hilarious comedy that young and old alike will enjoy.
This 1997 TV documentary follows 12-year-old Lou as she comes to terms with her sexuality in the 1960s. Incredibly real, this is not only a great film on lesbian sex education, but reminds kids (and even adults) that assuming the heteronormative narrative isn't always the way to go. We shouldn't have to break this to you, but not everyone is straight. Accept it.
If you're looking for a documentary that really covers all the bases and isn't afraid to go there, Sex: Female from the Center for New American Media is exactly what you need to watch. Various women from all walks of life discuss how they learned about sex, their current sex lives and much, much more. A 76-year-old grandmother even shares her bedroom stories for you to learn from.

Sex After Kids is a comedy about different couples dealing with, you guessed it, sex after kids. Though it is a rather hilarious film, there are bits and pieces of sage advice sprinkled throughout. Make sure to pay attention to nuggets of knowledge.
Thanks for Sharing is technically a movie about sex addiction , but it is still educational on the topic of sex. Obviously, by teaching you about sex addiction and the recovery it requires. This won't go too in-depth on the birds and the bees, but you'll at least understand hwo to spot sex addiction and what to do about it.
A raunchy teen comedy about losing your virginity, we've probably all seen American Pie at some point in our lives. If you haven't, you definitely should. It'll take you back to your high school days, while providing you with a better understanding of sex and the feelings surrounding the deed.

For many young adults, porn is more of a sex education than anything they learn in school. In fact, less than half of all U.S. states mandate sex ed , so it's not surprising that teens turn to porn to learn about sex.
The problem is that mainstream porn isn't proper sex education — it's a fantasy factory with the sole purpose of profit. One site that promotes this fantasy factory, Pornhub, is attempting to bridge the gap between porn and actual sex ed with their first-ever sex education video series . The series launched today via Pornhub's Sexual Wellness Center , where the tube site provides articles about sexual health, relationships, and of course sex itself.
All of the series's first 11 videos are narrated by licensed sex therapists and PhDs; they also show real anatomy and human examples to provide accuracy and dispel sex myths, according to Pornhub's press release. The videos cover a range of topics, from communication to preparing for sex to STIs. There's even a video about having safe sex amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
One expert narrator is Dr. Laurie Betito, director of the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center. "I am thrilled to present to our followers a brand new initiative at the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center," said Betito in the press release. "As promised, we are tapping into different platforms and mediums to extend the sexual health information we bring to those who seek our resources."
The wellness center's mission, according to Betito, is to provide quality information in both an educational and entertaining way. "Many people have questions on how to have sex, so we hope that our video series will provide the visuals that go with those questions," she said. While the series began with 11 videos, Betito promised the wellness center will be adding more on a regular basis.
Our current sex education system needs a lot of work, and these videos won't solve it. At least, however, Pornhub is providing this resource so young adults can learn that "real" sex is much different than the hardcore videos on their site.
