Severe Thunderstorms Hit Philadelphia, Causing Power Outages and Flooding

Philadelphia, PA – April 4, 2025 – A powerful storm system swept through Philadelphia today, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning, leading to widespread power outages and localized flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning earlier in the day, urging residents to take precautions.

The storm, which moved in during the early afternoon, dumped over 2 inches of rain in some areas within just a few hours. Wind gusts reached up to 60 mph, knocking down tree branches and power lines. According to PECO, more than 15,000 customers were left without electricity at the peak of the outages, with crews working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Flash flooding was reported in low-lying areas, particularly in Northeast Philadelphia and along the Schuylkill River. Several roads were temporarily closed, including parts of Kelly Drive and Lincoln Drive, where high water made travel dangerous. The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management advised drivers to avoid flooded streets and warned of possible delays on SEPTA routes.

'We saw rapid water accumulation in some neighborhoods, and first responders had to assist stranded motorists,' said Philadelphia Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Jessica Morales. 'Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported so far.'

The storm system is expected to move out by late evening, but scattered showers may persist overnight. Temperatures are forecast to drop into the 40s, with clearer skies returning by Saturday.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities, as additional storms could develop over the weekend. For those affected by outages, PECO advises reporting disruptions through their mobile app or customer service line.
