The father of a 23-year-old British woman arrested for posing naked on top of a sacred mountain during her gap year says she is sorry for the offence she has caused the Malaysian people. Sky's Michelle Clifford reports.
A British student jailed in Malaysia after being accused of causing an earthquake by posing naked on a sacred mountain is said to be "scared and upset".
Eleanor Hawkins is one of four tourists who are being investigated for indecent behaviour after the photographs were taken from the peak of Mount Kinabalu.
A few days later, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck nearby and killed 18 climbers - prompting a senior Malaysian politician to say that the tourists' behaviour was to blame.
The 23-year-old graduate from Derby was detained on Tuesday at an airport in Borneo as she attempted to fly to Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Her father, Timothy Hawkins, has conceded his daughter is "obviously" among the 10 people who appear in the images - but said the situation should not be "blown out of all proportion".
He said in a statement to Sky News: "She knows what she did was stupid and disrespectful and she is very sorry for the offence she has caused the Malaysian people.
"She has never been in any sort of trouble before."
Miss Hawkins and the three other tourists appeared in court on Thursday.
Sabah state police chief Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said they could face up to three months in jail and a fine, adding that the other tourists were being sought.
"According to the picture, of course you can see five or ten people who are naked but for now we have detained four of them, we will continue the investigation and look for who else is involved and if they are still in Sabah, we will catch them," the police chief said.
Mount Kinabalu is sacred to local tribal groups, who believe the peak is the final resting place for the spirits of the departed.
Politicians have said the stunt showed "disrespect to the sacred mountain", and a special ritual to "appease the mountain spirit" has been arranged following the deadly earthquake.
"Locals anger against the strippers on Mt Kinabalu was boiling hot even before the earthquake and multiplied a thousand times when it happened," Masidi Manjun, the provincial tourism minister tweeted.
Simon Calder, travel editor of The Independent, told Sky News: "As soon as you step foot outside the UK, to a place which has different values, you have to respect those, whether that is national laws on obscenity which is what these people have been charged with, or local beliefs about the mountains.
"You might think it sounds far-fetched but it is their country."
The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has confirmed to Sky News they are providing her with consular support.
A British official said that diplomats have visited her and confirmed that "she is in good condition".
Miss Hawkins' lawyer Ronny Cham told Sky News he was sent to represent her by the British High Commission.
He confirmed he had last seen her before she was remanded at Karamunsing Police Station, the District Police Headquarters in Kota Kinabalu.
Mr Cham said she has not yet been formally charged with anything and pointed out that while she may have offended locals, "it's a different question altogether if an offence had been committed".
"The law should be used to punish moral issues - only if it's enshrined in the law. If it's enshrined in cultural issue, then it's outside the law" Mr Cham told Sky News.
Miss Hawkins has a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from Southampton University.
She was travelling alone on a gap year around southeast Asia when the photographs were taken on 30 May.
The owner of the backpackers' hostel where Miss Hawkins stayed the night before the stunt told Sky News that she appeared to be "quiet and shy".
Jack Chin said that a group of five arrived on the same day as Miss Hawkins.
They included a German who looked older, and a Canadian brother and sister, who he claimed were "clearly troublemakers".
He said that he suspected something had happened on the mountain because when they returned to the hostel they wanted to check out straight away.
"Normally they would want hot showers, but 11 of them wanted to leave immediately," he told Sky News.
Asked about the local anger, Mr Chin said that initially locals thought the photos showed "stupid behaviour by European people … a European culture".
Only when a local politician linked the behaviour to the earthquake, he claimed, did anger among locals increase.
"If the earthquake hadn't happened, this thing would have passed already," he said.

A frightened eight year-old girl was made to strip naked for a search during a trip to visit her dad.
The unnamed girl was forced to take her clothes off at Buckingham Correctional Center in Dillwyn, Virginia, after being told refusal would see her barred from visiting her dad.
After taking all her clothes off in a bathroom, two female guards made her bend over and cough, while her dad’s horrified girlfriend Diamond Peerman looked on.
She texted her mom a distressed text after the November 24 incident, writing: ‘Hey Mom am so mad the jail had to strip me with all of clothes off this doesn’t make no sinc (sic).’
Her mom replied asking the child if they’d made her take her pants off, prompting her to reply ‘Yes all of my clothes off.’
The girl had been visiting the jail with Peerman, who is not her legal guardian, The Virginian Pilot reported.
Peerman told the Pilot that staff had initially said the child wouldn’t need to be searched – only to then turn around and say she had to undergo a full strip search.
She said the girl then asked her what strip search meant.
Peerman, who was also strip-searched, continued: ‘I told her, that means you have to take all of your clothes off or you’re not going to be able to see your dad.
The girl stopped crying before being searched, which saw her taken to a bathroom by two female guards.
After being made to do the cough test, she was gradually handed back her clothing piece by piece, with one of the officers asking the girl how old she was.
Peerman was disgusted by the question, and recalled: ‘I just looked at her and I’m like, “That’s not even appropriate to be asking her right now.
‘”Why would you ask that when she’s naked?”‘
Officers did not find any contraband on Peerman or the girl, but refused to let them have a ‘contact’ visit with the child’s dad, and made her talk to him from behind glass.
The youngster’s mom, who has not been named to protect her daughter’s identity, says the child has been ‘traumatized’ by the ordeal and has missed school as a result.
She added: ‘She’s a minor, she’s a girl…
‘She gets emotional. She will break down.’
Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Lisa Kinney has said the search should not have been authorized.
She told the Pilot: ‘It is deeply troubling and represents a breach in our protocol. We sincerely apologize to this child and her family and will be taking immediate disciplinary action against the person responsible.
‘Our procedure states that only a parent or legal guardian can approve the strip search of a minor; in this case the adult visitor who signed the consent for the minor to be strip searched wasn’t the minor’s parent or legal guardian.
‘The staff member who authorized the search of the minor following a K-9 alert didn’t have the authority to do so.
‘We take this matter very seriously and as mentioned above will be taking immediate disciplinary action against the person responsible.’
