A Russian soldier allegedly raped and injured a Ukrainian woman in a village previously occupied by Russian forces.
The 19-year-old trooper, identified only as Vladimir, was drunk when he arrived at a school in the northeastern Ukrainian village of Mala Rohan at midnight on March 13, The Independent reported.
Around 40 people remained at the school out of the 100 that initially gathered to hide from the prolonged bombing of the village, which was seized by Russian forces on Feb. 25, the day after Russia started invading Ukraine.
Vladimir allegedly grabbed a 27-year-old Ukrainian woman from the group at gunpoint and dragged her to a room on the second floor of the school while her 5-year-old daughter cried in fear.
"He had been drinking all day before he raped the poor girl. He was out of control. This was happening a bit; there didn’t seem to be much discipline among the Russian troops," Sergei, a 55-year-old villager, was quoted as saying.
The woman was able to return at around 7 a.m. after she was repeatedly raped and injected with what Vladimir claimed was a painkiller that night, the victim's mother claimed.
"He raped her, and cut her around the face and neck with a knife. He also cut off some of her hair. My daughter cannot speak about this anymore, she has been so badly affected by what happened," the mother said.
Vladimir allegedly told other soldiers that the woman had gone to the room with him willingly, but residents said that was a lie.
Before the incident, Vladimir allegedly waved a pistol at the school. He also ordered everyone to kneel while threatening to shoot them.
Vladimir also took a man away for around half an hour and forced him to engage in a spree of smashing shop windows with iron rods.
Russian officers arrested Vladimir with the help of Sergei following the alleged rape, and the teen soldier later disappeared.
"A couple of the officers said that the soldier would be shot — this would be done out in the woods. There would be no official record. The guy’s family would be told that he had been killed fighting the Ukrainians," Sergei said.
Three other villagers verified Sergei's account.
Ukrainian authorities have since retaken Mala Rohan.
The villagers’ allegations came after Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova launched an investigation into an incident in the Ukrainian district of Brovary that involved a Russian soldier accused of raping a woman.

Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament's Commissioner for Human Rights, alleged on Friday that Russian soldiers have raped children during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In a Facebook post, Denisova alleged that an 11-year-old boy was raped by Russians in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch as it happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
"The level of brutality of the army of terrorists and executioners of the Russian Federation knows no bounds - raped children...," wrote Denisova, who has been appointed by the Ukrainian parliament to monitor human rights abuses.
Also in Bucha, Denisova wrote, a 14-year-old girl became pregnant after she was allegedly raped by five Russian soldiers, and a 20-year-old woman was raped by three Russians "in all possible ways at once" in the city of Irpen.
"There is no place on earth or in hell where racist criminals can hide from retribution!" Denisova wrote, adding that rape is strictly banned by Article 27 of the 1949 Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.
Denisova also urged the UN Commission for Investigation Human Rights Violations to take into account "these facts of Russian war crimes in Ukraine."
"The racist occupiers must bear the strictest responsibility!" she said.
Children have reportedly been targeted by Russian soldiers since the war on Ukraine began in late February with the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reporting that 121 children were killed as of April 3.
On Sunday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report including witness accounts of Russian soldiers raping and executing Ukrainian civilians . HRW said that between February 27 and March 14, a case of "repeated rape" and two cases of "summary execution" have taken place in the occupied areas of Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kyiv.
"The cases we documented amount to unspeakable, deliberate cruelty and violence against Ukrainian civilians," Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement . "Rape, murder and other violent acts against people in the Russian forces' custody should be investigated as war crimes."
This week, Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Anton Gerashchenko said in a Telegram post that Russian soldiers "tortured and brutally killed" some civilians in the village of Motyzhyn, including mayor Olha Sukhenko and her husband and son, who were kidnapped by Russian troops on March 25. The mayor and her husband had refused to collaborate with the Russian forces, according to local residents.
Similar incidents were reported in Bucha where journalists said they saw dead bodies of civilians in what Ukrainian officials described as a "deliberate massacre."
Newsweek reached out to the Russian foreign ministry and the Ukrainian foreign ministry for comments.

A Russian schoolgirl who at 13 made global headlines after claiming she was impregnated by a 10-year-old boy has given birth to a baby girl.
Darya (Dasha), now 14, who made the shock announcement about her pregnancy live on Russian TV in January when she originally claimed she was impregnated by a 10-year-old boy, has taken to Instagram to reveal she had a “tough” delivery.
The controversy caused uproar across Russia and medics who examined the boy said he was too sexually immature to produce sperm. Darya has since alleged she was actually raped by a teenager who was 15 at the time. The age of consent in Russia is 16.
“That’s it, I gave birth to a girl at 10am,” she told her 350,000 Instagram followers in an Instagram post over the weekend . “It was tough, I’ll tell you everything later, I’m having a rest now.”
Darya said she was “absolutely terrified” of giving birth but insisted her 10-year-old friend Ivan would help her raise the child.
The teenager had made headlines across the world after she claimed her young friend was the father of her unborn child.
But a doctor who examined Ivan said he was too sexually immature to have fathered a child.
In a shock twist, Darya later claimed she was instead raped by a 15-year-old boy identified only as “Stepan” (not his real name) who is now 16.
Darya said she felt “too ashamed” to admit to the attack at the time.
The teenage boy was reported to be under house arrest in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia.
Since the case broke, the girl – now 14 – has appeared on TikTok, and has gone on to become a wannabe “influencer” on Instagram, where she has attracted more than 90,000 followers.
Her Instagram bio reads, “Pregnant at 13”.
The girl’s mother Elena – reported to be terminally ill with cancer – said her daughter’s pregnancy had given her a “reason to live”.
Elena had initially assumed that her daughter was sick with food poisoning, before realising she was carrying a child, she explained.
Darya told TV viewers: “It was Vanya’s idea (to have sex).
Dr Evgeny Grekov, a urology and andrology (male health) expert, who examined Ivan, told TV viewers in a show called Father at 10!? , “We rechecked the laboratory results three times so there cannot be any mistake.
“There cannot be sperm cells – he is still a child.
“Puberty has not started. So we have a lot of questions.”
Police are investigating the case and expected to take a DNA sample from the newborn girl.
Ivan, now 11, was not allowed to be present with her at the birth.
However, in another post prior to giving birth, Darya told followers the young boy will step into the role of father when he turns 16.
“He does not live with me, he stays overnight sometimes,” she said.
“At 16, he will take over the fatherhood, but it depends on how everything goes on between us.”
