Prosecutors say the drugs were hidden in a container of bananas from Ecuador. Customs authorities in Rotterdam have confiscated more than 8, kilos of cocaine, the largest seizure of the drug in the Netherlands, according to prosecutors. No arrests have been made yet in an investigation following the discovery, which was kept secret because of the ongoing probe. Prosecutors said the drugs, which have been destroyed, were discovered on 13 July hidden in a container of bananas from Ecuador. The announcement came the day after a presidential candidate known for speaking out against drug cartels and corruption in the South American nation was fatally shot at a political rally. The flourishing drug trade in Europe also is fuelling violence and corruption on the continent, the European Union agency that monitors drugs and addiction said in its annual report in June. It said record amounts of cocaine are being seized in Europe, with tons confiscated by European Union member countries in Rotterdam and the Belgian port of Antwerp are now the main gateways for Latin American cocaine into the continent, it said. The expansion of the cocaine market has been accompanied by a rise in violence and corruption in the EU, with fierce competition between traffickers leading to a rise in homicides and intimidation. Among the victims in the Netherlands in recent years were a lawyer representing a witness in the trial of an alleged drug gangster and crime reporter Peter R de Vries, who was a confidant of the witness. Unspecified threats to the heir to the Dutch throne, Princess Amalia, forced her last year to abandon student accommodation in Amsterdam and continue her studies from home. Last month, the mayor of the port city of Manta was shot and killed. By AP. Share this article Comments. Share this article. Based on 38 interviews with Rotterdam the Netherlands cocaine retail dealers, this study describes how cocaine supply lines in the Netherlands are organized in order to fine-tune policy with respect to crime, public order, and safety regarding the different trade levels. The retail cocaine market is strictly divided into separate markets for crack cocaine and powder cocaine. Crack dealers are often users of hard drugs who live in relatively disadvantaged conditions. Although selling cocaine is their primary activity, they also tend to be involved in other activities related to the drug scene, such as smuggling cocaine through the Amsterdam airport. The large cocaine transports that enter the Netherlands through Rotterdam harbor are not apparently part of the distribution line of the Rotterdam cocaine retailers. Because the supply for the Rotterdam cocaine retailers comes mainly from small-scale imports, police operations that successfully interdict large-scale cocaine imports will have little influence on the local cocaine supply in Rotterdam. Nearly all of the 38 Rotterdam low-level retail dealers interviewed were recruited through 2 community fieldworkers who were formerly employed by the Addiction Research Institute Rotterdam within the framework of the Rotterdam Drug Monitoring System. The recruiters are themselves experienced low-level retail cocaine dealers and also frequent users of their own merchandise. During the interviews, the cocaine retailers were asked to describe their own cocaine trade as well as the rest of the domestic cocaine distribution chain. Additional Details Publication Format.
