Roger Goodell Extends Contract as NFL Commissioner Through 2027

New York, NY – December 13, 2023

The National Football League (NFL) announced today that Commissioner Roger Goodell has signed a contract extension, keeping him in the league’s top leadership role through the 2027 season. The decision, unanimously approved by NFL team owners, solidifies Goodell’s long-standing tenure as one of the most influential figures in professional sports.

Goodell, who became commissioner in 2006, has overseen unprecedented growth for the league, including massive media rights deals, international expansion, and increased revenue. Under his leadership, the NFL has maintained its status as America’s most popular sports league, with franchises now valued at billions of dollars.

'Roger’s vision and dedication have been instrumental in the NFL’s success,' said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a key supporter of Goodell. 'His ability to navigate complex challenges while growing the game globally makes him the right leader for our future.'

However, Goodell’s tenure has not been without controversy. He has faced criticism over the league’s handling of player safety concerns, domestic violence cases, and the Washington Commanders’ workplace misconduct scandal. Despite these challenges, owners have consistently backed his leadership, citing the league’s financial prosperity.

With this extension, Goodell is set to surpass Pete Rozelle’s 29-year tenure as the second-longest-serving commissioner in NFL history, behind only Elmer Layden (1941–1946). As the league prepares for future challenges, including potential expansion and ongoing labor negotiations, Goodell’s leadership will remain central to its direction.
