Some sex positions require more effort from one partner than the other. The reverse cowgirl, a variation of the cowgirl position, is one example. The partner on top has most of the control and does most of the moving, while the partner on the bottom lies on their back.
References to the reverse cowgirl position can be found as far back in history as the Kama Sutra , a 2,300-year-old Hindu text that included descriptions of hundreds of sexual positions. In the ancient text, reverse cowgirl is known as The Tigress.
In reverse cowgirl, the person receiving penetration sits on top of their partner, but instead of sitting face-to-face, they face away toward their partner’s feet. The person on top can control the pace, rhythm, and depth of penetration.
Once in position, the partner on top can try a number of variations to the beginning sitting position:
One partner sits on top of the other in both positions. However, in cowgirl, the person on top is facing forward towards their partner’s head, while in reverse cowgirl they are turned in the opposite direction, toward their partner’s feet.
Reverse Cowgirl Is Only for Heterosexual Couples
This position can easily be achieved by two men with anal intercourse or by two women where the bottom partner wears a strap-on dildo. The positions and motions are the same for all couples.
This position requires a little flexibility and coordination, so don’t try to rush it. You might feel stimulation in new and different areas of your body. Take a moment to get used to any new sensations before committing to a rhythm.
Talking to Your Partner About the Reverse Cowgirl Position
As with any new sex position, be sure to communicate with your partner about doing the reverse cowgirl position. Make sure both of you have an understanding of what it is and what you’re supposed to do.
This position empowers the person on top to control the action, so if you’re on top, don’t be afraid to let your partner know what it is that you want or need more of.
Staying in the reverse cowgirl position for a long time could be uncomfortable for your knees and some other joints. It can also put a strain on the leg and arm muscles. It might be a good idea to do some stretching before you try out this position.
Be mindful of fatigue. Holding this position can be quite tiring for the partner on top. If their knees get tired, they can try shifting the heels of their feet outward or inward to relieve some pressure. You and your partner can also rotate among the different reverse cowgirl variations to give your muscles a break. Additionally, the penetrating partner can hold the partner on the top by the waist and thrust upward.
Communicate with your partner during reverse cowgirl so they know when you need or want to change variations in the position, or you want to switch to a new position entirely.

Everything about reverse cowgirl sounds like it was built to awaken your wild side. (Say it with me...YEE-HAW!) If there was a polar opposite to missionary position, reverse cowgirl would be it. (Nothing against missionary , though.)
But as hot as the reverse cowgirl position is in theory , if you're unfamiliar with it, it can get a little tricky. You know, figuring out how to maneuver a smooth ride; then there’s also the whole booty-in-your-partner’s-face aspect of the position.
"Typically, the [person on top] is facing away from [their] partner—this can make it more or less psychologically comfortable for couples depending upon their relationship," says Susan Kellogg-Spadt , PhD, director of Female Sexual Medicine at The Center for Pelvic Medicine in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and ambassador for women's health care company Bonafide .
If you tend to get in your head a bit during sex, then this is the move for you. Being able to turn away from your partner and focus on the movements and pleasure is a win. "It can be less intimate/intimidating because of added distance between partners," says Kellogg.
But if you're all about that face-to-face, this position might just be a quick detour before you flip around to face each other again.
Generally, this position tends to fall into the category of "special-occasion sex" or "added-spice sex," but that totally depends on the couple, says Kellog.
Whether this is an all-night-long move or just a quick stop for the night, the reverse cowgirl position allows you to take the reins. And because you get to control speed and depth of penetration, it just might become your favorite position in the bedroom.
If you know how to do regular cowgirl position (face your partner and straddle them with a knee on either side of their hips), then you know how to do reverse cowgirl. All you have to do is flip it and reverse it.
How to: Sit on top of your partner, facing their feet, then have your partner bend their legs or keep ‘em straight. Hold on tight to their knees or thighs and start moving up and down or grinding to find what feels good.
For starters, it's a power position, says Nan Wise, PhD, a licensed psychotherapist and certified sex therapist, and author of the forthcoming Why Good Sex Matters . "You have a lot of leverage for moving and controlling the angle and movement of your pelvis," she says. "It's a super-powerful feminine pose."
As for your partner, they get to lie back and receive. Or if they want get in on the action, they can bend their knees and thrust. Plus, all the while, they'll have an amazing view of your gorge backside.
If you're on top, this position is one that'll serve up some major penetration.
"It's known to enhance the depth of penetration, which isn’t for everyone," says Kellogg. "[Partners on the bottom] tend to prefer it because of this depth and the visual of looking at partner's behind. [Partners on top] do not always enjoy themselves because of a hit in the cervix… but they can learn to enjoy it by incorporating a foreword lean, not sitting up straight (avoids cervix collision) and maximizing anterior fornix (G-spot) friction."
With you in charge of the position, she says it allows you to shake things up the power dynamic in your relationship. Playing with these different aspects of power play can be a way to help us get unstuck from our usual roles in bed,” Wise says.
Physically, thought, the key, says Wise, is getting comfortable.
Here's how to do it: "Start slow with easy thrusting and use plenty of lube so [the partner on top] can modify [their] sitting angles," says Kellogg.
Slowly build up speed or switch up your thrusting direction to determine what feels best, and don't be shy about modifications:
