What else do you do on a wet and windy Christmas holiday but get out the board games. Luckily, I was sent The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game from Rascals to test out, and despite my son being younger than the suggested age limit of 12, we sat down to have a game. We are horse owners and have an ex racehorse, so we were intrigued to see if it was anything like “real” racing.
On opening the heavyish box we were impressed by the quality
of the contents.
The instructions take a bit of reading the first time around
but once you have memorised them, they are pretty simple. You can have 2-6
players, one jockey of each colour, and each player is given £20,000.00 to
start with together with a betting slip. Each game has six races and the race
cards are shuffled and laid out in order that the six races will run. Each
player then gets a lane card, so they know where to start and 7 really nasty
cards. Just like a real-life horse race the odds are different for each horse.
Each player chooses one speed, 1-6, per horse per race with 1 being the fastest
and the lane x the speed determines the odds. The horses and odds are written
up on the Bookies board, a whiteboard very much like the one at the races. You complete your betting slip, put your money
down and the game begins.
There are three sections of the board where you can double
up your dice throw but only if you have a certain horse number, this can make a
big difference on your speed round the board. There are also five hedges to
jump and a water jump these are one place that the really nasty cards come in,
if you have the relevant card you can make another players horse fall and
unless they have a remount card they are out of the race. There are also
several other types of really nasty card, a whip round card which you can use
at the start to make a player miss two goes, a slip up on the flat card which
causes a fall between fences, horse under pressure card which makes a horse go
right instead of forwards, a false start which gets all horses brought back to
start again, and a riderless horse card that can be used if you have fallen to
block others. Then just when you think you have won there are three cards that
can disqualify you from the race by throwing a specific number on the dice,
photo finish, objection and stewards enquiry. Those really do cause some words
when the winner finds out he has now lost all his money!
The object of the game is to win the most money over the six
games and we certainly had fun doing that. With odds up to 50:1 you can quickly
rack up a large bank balance which you can just as easily lose if you bet
recklessly. You can find that players can quickly be out of a race with the
really nasty cards causing fallers at every fence, but with six races on each
race card the odds are that you will finish some races. As with most board
games with more players the game gets more exciting and louder!
I am really looking forward to playing this on Boxing Day
with the extended family, it’s a great game where you can in the spirit of
gamesmanship be really nasty!
The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is a fantastic game
suitable for most members of the family as our six year old had no problems
understanding the rules of the game once it was set up. I would highly
recommend this game whether you like horse racing or not, but it certainly will
be a particular favourite with my horse loving friends.

Oh… My… Days! If ever there was a game that was created to bring out the worst instincts in you, make you become very devious and cunning, then it is most certainly and definitely this game. You need to be have your wits about you and your devilish devious and cunning plans need to be played to your best advantage. Forget friends and family when playing this game, you are out to win and that is your main goal.
Conjure up your most devious plan as your main goal and objective is to win as much money as you can at the races and the good thing about this, there are a couple of ways to do this.
1.        Your horse will need to come first, second or third, but if you are anything like me, there is no competition as my ultimate goal was to make sure my horse came first.
2.        You will need to place your bet(s) on winning horses.
I have to admit, I took some time to read and understand the instructions as I personally found them quite confusing, however, stick with them, set some time aside to fully understand them, once you do, it will be so worth it. Trial and error to start with but stick with it, it is all part of the sneaky game planning you will soon learn to play, so make sure you really understand how it all works to conjure up your plans.
Someone will need to be chosen as the bookmaker as they will need to take control of the game. We each threw the dice and whoever scored the highest became the bookmaker.
Before a race starts, lane placings are drawn and the horse that draws the inside lane starts.
How the horses are moved and dependant on what you throw on the dice, throw a 1, the horse moves 1 length, throw a 2, the horse moves 2 lengths forward, this is the same if a 3, 4, 5 or 6 is thrown.
If like me, rules are to be broken but sometimes you have to play by the rules to be cunning and sneaky. Some of the rules control how the racing works which includes lane changes and blocking. I love the Early Pace, Quicken Up and Finish Well sections. These are brilliant as they give extra driving power for your horse… This was one of my favourites.
Onto another favourite part of the game of mine… the set of mischief cards… oh boy did I create mayhem with the others and players in the races
Everyone playing gets a number of Really Nasty Cards, £20,000 cash and a horse race would not be a horse race without a betting slip, which each player gets too.
Each race meeting game played will consists of six races.
Each player will get six horses, one for each race.
Each horse has a grade from 1 to 6. 1 being the best out of the 6 and 6 being the worst.
Before you start the game, each player must make the commitment on which horse will run in which race.
Remember, be cagey, cunning, whatever it takes to make sure you and your horse wins. You will need your wit about you as you will need to work out the odds when placing your bets too.
Your biggest secret of all…. DO NOT LET ON TO ANYONE WHICH HORSE OR HORSES YOU HAVE BET ON!
I am extremely competitive, think monopoly for frustration and competitiveness and times that by 10, this game really did bring the worst out it me.
There was 4 of us playing and took us around 90-120 minutes. Between wine and other alcohol breaks, it all added to the fun, devilish and devious plans.
We had so much laughter and fun, grunted and groaned at the cunningness on how each of us played and was brilliant to see how our instincts kicked in to make sure we tried our best to win and beat the others.
There are so many questions to think about when playing this game. You need to have a game plan, be devious, manipulative and sneaky, the more cunning you can be, the better the game.
1.        Do you want your horse to win, if not, what strategies do you put in place? Do you make your horse fall over or, was you not happy with how the race went and demanded a restart?
2.        Can you be cold hearted, ruthless, destructive and double crossing whilst bluffing at the same time?
Do you honestly have what it takes to be Really Nasty? Try this game out and find out just how nasty you can be. I promise, you will have blast and so much fun.
If you intend to play the game a lot, use a pencil when writing on the betting slips as you will soon run out of the betting slips. I could not find anywhere to buy them, other than used pads on eBay. This idea came to me as I love playing Yahtzee and it is the same with that game too but you can buy replacements pads for that game. By using pencil, it is also about helping to save the planet, less paper means less recycling.
Whilst the age range is 12 and over, I suggest being mindful at just how nasty, conniving, deceitful etc. people may get playing this game and if you are worried about upsetting any children playing, then you might not want the to join in. If like us, we did play with the grandchildren but did not play the nasty side of our strategies and was far less cunning. We wanted to the children to enjoy the game have some fun but also teach them about game plans and strategies without being too nasty or conniving.
Rating: Would I recommend The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game? Absolutely! It is a 5/5 from me, if I am really honest, if I had to score out of 10, it would be 10/10

Extremely well thought out and clever. Really is a fun game that will come out year after year. Like most games the playing pieces could be more substantial but don't let that put you off.

Was introduced to this game by a friend, although like most games it starts off slow while everyone understands how to play and becomes more strategic. The basics of the game is roll a dice and move round the track. Good game, not too taxing. Good tip laminate the betting slips as although they provide you with loads they will soon run out if the game is played continuously over time. Laminate the betting slip and get a white board pen or wax pencil, that way when the game is done u can just wipe away and re use next time.

Works better in a larger group, not sure how two of you would enjoy this but generally games of 4-6 work best. Strategic betting and cunning bluffs form the basis along with the luck of the dice. Arrives quick with prime, also very competitive price at £19.99.

Even when you think you’ve won…have you? I played this with friends and although it takes a while to digest the rules, it is brilliant. With this game the are tactics as well as chance. The title says it all!

This certainly didn't disappoint on Christmas day. It was easy to assemble and became clear what to do when you played the game as it did look complicated on reading the instructions. However, once you start playing it is easy to get into and a great laugh, especially seeing your opponent's face when you play a nasty card. Definitely worth the money and would recommend.

I was recommended this game and it did not disappoint. Once you’ve been through the rules it’s straight forward to play. There’s six races and so you can play it in 2/2.5hrs. As the races go on and you know the rules everyone is quicker as the excitement increase. Even had two teenagers not on their phones at the edge of their seats in the last two races.

We play with our older children and the competitive streak makes this game great fun! A little complicated to start with but after the first couple of race it gets easy.

Show your true colours in this competitive family game of bluffing, double-crossing and fun! Go for the prize money with your own horse or secretly back another. Use your Really Nasty cards to sabotage the race but don’t be surprised if you get diddled by your Dad! The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game is fantastic fun for all the family and you don’t need any knowledge of horse racing to play. Amazon.co.uk Review: Welcome to The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game - the game designed to stimulate your worst instincts and get you to use cunning and deviousness to your best advantage. The game comes complete with all pieces needed to play-horses and jockeys, lane cards, really nasty cards, a riderless horse to create more havoc and the usual dice, pencil and money. The object of the game is to win the most money at the race meeting and this can be done in one of two ways. Firstly, by getting your horse placed first, second or third in the race and secondly, by placing Bets on winning horses. So, how does the game go? Each player gets a number of Really Nasty cards, £20,000 cash and of course, the betting slip. The game lasts for a race meeting of six races. Each player gets six horses, one for each race. The horses are graded 1 to 6, 1 being the best horse and 6 being the worst horse. Before racing starts each owner has to decide which race each horse will run. There are other matters too, such as working out the betting odds, and lots of shady dealings will likely ensue. The elected bookmaker controls the gameplay placing are drawn before each race, and the horse that draws the inside lane starts. Movement is decided by a throw of the dice - one length forward for one, two lengths for two and so on. There are rules that control the manner of racing as well, such as changing lanes, cornering and blocking, plus the special early pace, quicken up and finish well sections that give extra momentum for your horse. There is also a set of mischief cards to help you create havoc w
