RFK Jr. Takes a Controversial Swim in Polluted Rock Creek, Sparking Environmental Debate

Presidential candidate and environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made headlines today after taking an impromptu swim in Rock Creek, a waterway long plagued by pollution concerns. The surprising dip occurred during a campaign stop near the creek, where Kennedy had been speaking about his plans to combat water contamination nationwide.

Eyewitnesses say Kennedy, 71, stripped down to a T-shirt and shorts before wading into the creek near Peirce Mill, much to the shock of onlookers. 'He just walked right in like it was nothing,' said local resident Maria Gonzalez. 'People were yelling, 'That water’s not clean!' but he just laughed and said, 'I’ve survived worse.''

Rock Creek, which runs through the heart of D.C., has struggled with pollution for decades due to urban runoff, sewage overflows, and chemical contaminants. The National Park Service and environmental groups have repeatedly warned against swimming in the creek due to high bacteria levels, particularly after rainstorms.

Kennedy, a longtime advocate for clean water, later defended his swim in a press conference, calling it a 'symbolic act' to highlight the need for stronger environmental protections. 'If our waterways are too toxic to swim in, then we’ve failed as a nation,' he declared. 'I wanted to show that we can—and must—do better.'

Critics, however, accused the candidate of political grandstanding. 'This was a reckless stunt,' said spokesperson for a rival campaign. 'Rock Creek has E. coli levels that can make people seriously ill. Leadership isn’t about performative risk-taking—it’s about real solutions.'

Public health officials reiterated warnings against swimming in the creek, while environmental activists praised Kennedy for drawing attention to the issue. 'Whether you agree with his methods or not, he’s forcing a conversation we need to have,' said Rebecca Carter of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network.

As the story spreads, one question lingers: Will Kennedy’s swim inspire action—or just a bad case of swimmer’s itch? Either way, Rock Creek is suddenly at the center of the national environmental debate.
