[Quickstart Guide] Mining/Forging/Voting

[Quickstart Guide] Mining/Forging/Voting

mx, rexy (proofreading)

With Shift's DPoS system, you can vote for up to 101 delegates from your wallet. Paying a fee of 1 SHIFT allows you to vote for 1 to 33 delegates per round. If you vote for 1 delegate with 1000 SHIFT he gets a vote of 1000 SHIFT, if you vote for 101 delegate with 1000 SHIFT they all get a vote of 1000 SHIFT each. Therefore, it's economical to use all 33 of your delegate votes per voting round. Thus, if you were to spend 3 SHIFT and used all votes allowed in each round, you will have voted for 99 delegates.

The impact and weight that your vote has depends on the amount of SHIFT in your wallet. Your vote contributes to the overall total weight that a delegate maintains and determines who is able forge SHIFT. At the moment, only the top 101 delegates are engaged in the forging of blocks and receive a reward for their work.

Many delegates are also "pools", i.e. they give a certain share of their reward to those who vote for them. Pools pay remunerations on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, and many also have a minimum payout threshold. Each pool has its own individual policies. For wallets with a small balance, payments may take some time since hitting the payout threshold may take longer with a smaller balance. On the site Delegate Verifier Tool, you can calculate the approximate amount of compensation you'll receive for voting depending on your current balance.

Pools typically pay from 10 to 80 percent. For more information, you can also check out the site Delegate Verifier Tool.

In addition to pools, it's important to vote for developers who are also delegates and for active members of the community.

Note:

  1. You shouldn’t vote for multiple delegates that belong to one person, since that would defeat the idea of decentralization and partially threatens the stability of the network. Why? Imagine the owner of these delegates wouldn’t be around for some time tomorrow. In this time, both of his servers can break and threaten the stability of the network double, because he has two bad delegates and not one. You concentrate the risk of failure into the hands of few.
  2. Another very important detail about delegates is their uptime / productivity, which should be close to 100% to make sure that the network can run stable all the time. You can check delegtes' productivity on Explorer.
