Publishers Clearing House Surprises Customers with Refund Checks After Settlement

In an unexpected twist, thousands of Publishers Clearing House (PCH) customers are receiving refund checks in the mail this week as part of a multimillion-dollar settlement. The payouts come after a class-action lawsuit alleged that the company used deceptive marketing practices to mislead consumers about sweepstakes entries and purchases.

The lawsuit, filed in 2022, claimed that PCH led customers to believe that buying products would increase their chances of winning prizes—a practice the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has long warned against. While PCH denied wrongdoing, the company agreed to a $25 million settlement earlier this year to resolve the claims.

Now, eligible customers who made purchases or paid for subscriptions between 2018 and 2023 are receiving checks ranging from

20to500, depending on their spending. Many recipients expressed surprise, having long forgotten about their PCH orders.

'I thought it was another PCH sweepstakes notice at first,' said Linda Carter, a retiree from Ohio who received a $75 check. 'Then I saw it was real money coming back to me—what a nice surprise!'

PCH has stated that it remains committed to 'fair and transparent sweepstakes practices' and encourages customers to verify the legitimacy of the refunds through its official website. The FTC advises recipients to cash their checks promptly, as they typically expire within 90 days.

For many, the refund serves as a rare win—even if it’s not the iconic 'Prize Patrol' knocking on their door.
