The best secret agent movies aren't all about James Bond and Jason Bourne, though they do rank highly amongst the very greatest, according to IMDb.
When audiences think of the spy movie, their minds undoubtedly go to James Bond. While's Ian Fleming's 007 undoubtedly helped to raise popularity in the genre and inspired many imitators, the spy movie was around long before Bond appeared on the screen. Likewise, the genre has branched out considerably since then.
With the international intrigue, the exciting action, and the high-stakes missions, it is not hard to see why these types of stories became so popular. And with the top-rated spy movies at IMDb, they show just how many great and versatile movies have been a part of the genre.
Updated on January 31st, 2022 by Colin McCormick: There is something about the spy genre that has always fascinated audiences. Along with the long-running James Bond franchise, these types of stories have popped up everywhere from Alfred Hitchcock thrillers to zany comedies. With so many different avenues to take the genre, there doesn't seem to be any sign of the secret agent movie going away anytime soon. But there are always more entries in the genre that fans can check out or revisit.
The original Austin Powers film kicked off a trilogy of films designed to poke fun at the British secret agent motif by offering up the groovy and oddly charming British secret agent, Austin Powers
Mike Myers played dual roles as the titular Austin Powers and his Blofeld parody of a nemesis, Dr. Evil . Clever and full of slapstick, the first Austin Powers movie had fun with paying homage to the spy genre while also pointing out some of its silliest aspects.

Author John le Carre is one of the most celebrated writers of the spy genre and this movie is a prime example of his grounded, mature approach. Taking place during the grim paranoia of the Cold War era, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy follows veteran MI6 agent George Smiley as he is brought out of a forced retirement to conduct a vital mole hunt.
Oldman gives a perfectly reserved performance as Smiley who is a master observer while remaining inconspicuous. The movie is packed with impressive talents including Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy.
When CIA agent Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is arrested in China for espionage, his mentor Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) gets pulled from the edge of a long-awaited retirement as he sets out to free his old friend.
Spy Game delves into the partnership between these two men, going back to the Vietnam War and stretching into the modern spy world. Director Tony Scott directs with a fun energy and it is a treat to see Pitt and Redford sharing the screen.
Though Oscar-winner director James Cameron is not known for the humor of his movies, True Lies injects some much-needed laughs into the spy genre without ever sacrificing the thrills of the story.
This film follows world-class secret agent Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) as he tracks down stolen nuclear weapons while keeping his dangerous job hidden from his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis). The two leads make for a surprisingly great comedic duo as the movie combines huge action with domestic comedy.

Ronin is one of the most unappreciated spy movies in the genre, but its cult following is undeniable. Robert De Niro plays ex-U.S. intelligence agent Sam, a man who joins a ragtag band of mercenaries to recover a mysterious case from international bad guys.
The film's story is both tense and riveting and features spectacular action sequences including an amazing car chase that ranks among the best of all time. It also features a terrific cast, from Stellan Skarsgard to Sean Bean.
β€’ Available to stream on Prime Video
The first three Mission: Impossible films varied in visual style and action sequences, thanks to the distinct visions of its directors. For Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , Brad Bird stepped away from the world of animation to deliver a wildly fun entry into the genre.
The movie focuses more on the team aspect of the missions with Ethan Hunt still in the lead. It also helped really kick start the series' penchant for wild stunts such as when Hunt scales one of the tallest buildings in the world.
β€’ Available to stream on Starz, Starz on Prime Video, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand
Another period masterpiece from acclaimed director Steven Spielberg , Munich is based on the Munich Massacre that tragically occurred at the 1972 Summer Olympics and tells the story of Israel's top-secret retaliation.
The movie stars the likes of Eric Bana and Daniel Craig as a team of agents tasked with hunting down those responsible. It is a harrowing and brutal look at the spy world that asks interesting questions about the cost of "an eye for an eye."
β€’ Available to stream on Hulu, Paramount+, Paramount+ on Prime Video , Epix, Epix on Prime Video, Epix on Roku, Max Go, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand
Released at a time when James Bond was all the craze, Three Days of the Condor provides a welcome change in pace. It follows an average CIA codebreaker, Joe Turner (Robert Redford), as he stumbles upon a massacre in his workplace. The tension builds as he discovers that his superiors at the CIA, in addition to being responsible for the murders, are now after him.
This 1975 film is a fast-paced story of survival that is integrated with a hunt for the truth. Redford shines as the scared yet determined hero, cementing him as one of Hollywood's best leading men.
β€’ Available to stream on Paramount+, Paramount+ on Prime Video, FX Now, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand
The Mission: Impossible franchise continues to improve upon itself, becoming one of the best spy franchises around. Mission: Impossible – Fallout continues that trend with what is perhaps its most exhilarating adventure yet.
The movie finds Ethan Hunt and his team racing against the clock to stop a mysterious figure from detonating nuclear weapons. The stunts once again show the lengths Tom Cruise is willing to go to in order to entertain fans and he is joined by Henry Cavill in a fun supporting role.
β€’ Available to stream on HBO, HBO Max, DIRECTV, Syfy, and Spectrum on Demand
After the first Bourne adventure introduced Matt Damon's amnesiac trained killer, the first sequel takes the franchise in an exciting new direction. The Bourne Supremacy finds Jason Bourne lured out of hiding when he is framed for an assassination.
Director Paul Greengrass took over the franchise and infuses it with his own chaotic style that works very well. Damon continues to turn Bourne into an intense new action hero while the fight sequences and car chases are top-notch.
β€’ Available to stream on HBO, HBO Max, Max Go, DIRECTV, Cinemax on Prime Video, and Spectrum on Demand
Argo is unique among spy films in the fact that it's based on the true story about the rescue of U.S. hostages in Tehran in 1979. Ben Affleck plays CIA exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez, who leads a team of agents disguised as Canadian filmmakers into the heart of the viper's nest.
The movie is comical, edgy, and nail-biting to the very last minute, despite audiences already knowing how the entire thing played out. Well acted, shot, and directed, Argo is a fantastic spy thriller that deserves its accolades.
β€’ Available to stream on DIRECTV, TNT, TBS, Spectrum on Demand, and Tru TV
In 2014, the world was getting a bit tired of the traditional spy movie formula, which is why director Matthew Vaughn took an outrageous approach with Kingsman: The Secret Service . The plot centers around a young kid tossed into an elite secret spy agency's training program who soon becomes their star pupil.
The film impressed audiences with its fun sense of humor and inventive action sequences. Most surprising of all was seeing Colin Firth become an unexpected action hero.
β€’ Available to stream on Hulu, Paramount+, Paramount+ on Prime Video, Epix, Epix on Prime Video, Epix on Roku, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand
Daniel Craig returned as 007 for his third outing as Bond in what was named as one of the best in the series. Skyfall follows a plot of revenge set against M with a sadistic mastermind at its center.
Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes stepped in to helm the latest Bond outing and delivered a gorgeous-looking action-adventure. Craig continued to prove himself one of the best 007s while Javier Bardem made for a wonderfully unsettling villain.
β€’ Available to stream on Hulu, Paramount+, Paramount+ on Prime Video, Epix, Epix on Prime Video, Epix on Roku, DIRECTV, and Sling
Though Francis Ford Coppola made classics like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now , there are some fans who regard The Conversation as his greatest masterpiece. Gene Hackman stars as a surveillance expert who is hired to spy on a pair of subjects but overhears something potentially more dangerous than he expected.
The movie is a smaller story compared to Coppola's other movies but it hooks the viewer from the very beginning. Hackman's layered performance also elevates it until the final moments with an impactful reveal.
β€’ Available to stream on HBO, HBO Max, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand
The first of a five-film series, The Bourne Identity tells the story of Jason Bourne who, after being pulled from the ocean, has no memory of who he is but soon finds that he has a dangerous past that many people want to keep hidden.
Matt Damon proved himself a terrific action star in the lead role, delivering a reserved yet badass performance. Director Doug Liman infused the story with some incredible action scenes that left fans on the edge of their seats.
β€’ Available to stream on Tubi, Indie Flix, and Flix Fling
Alfred Hitchcock is a master of suspense so it only makes sense that he would play in the spy genre with some of his movies. Notorious is one of his most popular projects which follows the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy who is recruited by a U.S. agent to infiltrate the Nazi command.
Starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, Notorious is a classic throwback Hollywood thriller that will still excite and entertain viewers all these decades later.
Though some were skeptical of Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond , he proved his critics wrong very quickly in his first outing as 007 in Casino Royale . The story finds Bond at the beginning of his spy career as he joins a high-stakes poker game in the hopes of snaring an international criminal.
After some silly Bond entries leading up to the reboot, Casino Royale offered a grittier and more grounded take on the series that was much needed.
β€’ Available to stream on Prime Video and Syfy
The third film in the franchise, The Bourne Ultimatum follows Jason Bourne that is still seeking to understand his past. As he grows closer to uncovering the truth, his enemies begin to close in on him.
While the franchise went on to include a disappointing fourth movie as well as a spinoff, The Bourne Ultimatum felt like a natural conclusion to the trilogy. Once again, it delivered on the thrills, action, and an epic car chase.
Once again, Alfred Hitchcock proves himself one of the best directors of all time and a brilliant master of thrillers. North By Northwest takes an interesting approach to the spy genre as it revolves around an ordinary man mistaken for a secret agent who is then hunted by dangerous foes.
The movie is a top-notch thriller with so many iconic scenes that have gone down as some of the most memorable sequences in movie history.
Similar to Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation , the German movie The Lives of Others is a more grounded approach to a spy story. Set East Berlin in 1984, the movie follows a special agent hired to spy on a couple only to be sucked into their lives.
While the big action scenes of gunfights and explosions can be fun, The Lives of Others shows the kind of intense story that can be told without such things. It makes for a compelling and riveting thriller.
