Progressive Judge Janet Protasiewicz Wins Pivotal Wisconsin Supreme Court Election, Shifting Court’s Balance

In a decisive victory that could reshape Wisconsin’s political landscape, Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated former Justice Dan Kelly in Tuesday’s high-stakes Wisconsin Supreme Court election. The win flips the court’s ideological balance from conservative to liberal for the first time in 15 years, with major implications for abortion rights, redistricting, and election laws in the battleground state.

Protasiewicz, a progressive-backed candidate, secured 55% of the vote, capitalizing on her strong support for abortion access and her criticism of Wisconsin’s heavily gerrymandered legislative maps. Her opponent, Kelly, a conservative former justice, had been endorsed by prominent Republicans but struggled to overcome Protasiewicz’s fundraising advantage and voter mobilization efforts.

'Tonight, Wisconsin voters made it clear: they want a Supreme Court that prioritizes fairness, democracy, and the rights of all citizens,' Protasiewicz told supporters at her victory party in Milwaukee. 'This isn’t just a win for me—it’s a win for every Wisconsinite who believes in justice over partisanship.'

The race, the most expensive judicial election in U.S. history with over $45 million spent, was seen as a proxy battle for control over key issues ahead of the 2024 presidential election. With Protasiewicz’s victory, the court’s new 4-3 liberal majority is expected to revisit Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban, challenge Republican-drawn legislative districts, and rule on future election-related disputes.

Republican leaders, including state GOP Chair Brian Schimming, conceded the loss but vowed to 'hold the new majority accountable.' Meanwhile, Democrats and activists celebrated the outcome as a turning point for the state.

'This is a huge victory for democracy,' said Ben Wikler, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. 'Wisconsin’s Supreme Court will now reflect the will of the people, not partisan agendas.'

The shift in power takes effect in August, setting the stage for major legal battles in one of the nation’s most closely watched swing states.
