Qualifying for top colleges starts long before junior year of high school. A rigorous K-12 education helps develop the skills and knowledge students need to excel on the SAT and stand out in the college application process. For some students, private school will give them the best education.
Private K-12 schools can be as competitive as the Ivies. If you're trying to get your child into one of the best private schools in the country, your philosophy should be similar to how you'd approach applying for spots at top colleges: look for the best match, cast a wide net, and highlight your child's strengths.
Here are some factors you should consider when evaluating private schools:
Some private schools start in nursery school, while others begin in middle or high school. Private schools have their own lingo about different grade levels, so reference their websites for information. Many refer to high school as "upper school" and elementary school as "lower school."
Although the New York City area private school scene is insanely competitive for good reason — the top 10 list always includes many of the big-name NYC schools like Trinity, Collegiate, and Horace Mann — you can find excellent private schools in every state.
Many of the top schools also offer boarding options if relocating isn't possible.
Tuition for selective private schools often rivals or exceeds that of college, but many parents view private school as an investment in their child's education and future. Fortunately, most schools offer scholarships for admitted students who demonstrate need. However, unlike the FAFSA, many private schools consider needs based on the incomes of both parents, even if they're divorced and the noncustodial parent won't be contributing to tuition.
Private schools can be an ideal choice for students who fall outside the mainstream. There are many private schools that cater to students with special needs, such as gifted students or students with dyslexia.
The criteria private schools use for evaluating students for admission will vary greatly based on their age. Schools that admit kindergarten students obviously aren't going to be asking for a student essay.
In general, the older the student, the more their past achievements will matter for private school admission. However, some top schools, such as The Nueva School, have an IQ requirement that applies to even the youngest students.
When applying, you'll start by filling out a detailed application that may include an essay from an older student or parent. Most schools will want to see your student's academic record from at least the past three years as well as their standardized test scores, if applicable. The ISEE is the Independent School Entrance Examination, and many schools will require it for middle or high school applicants.
You will probably fill out financial aid information along with your application. Your need for financial aid can affect your chances of admission at some schools but not at others. Check the school's website or call the admissions office for clarification of their policy if this will affect your decision to apply or ask for financial aid.
Finally, some schools will require an interview, especially for older students. Almost all schools will offer a tour and a meeting with school officials if you would like to schedule one.
Although there's no definitive consensus on whether private school is better than public school, there's no doubt that it may be a better choice for some students. If you think your child might benefit from private education, you'll be able to find a great fit by considering all of your options. Approach it like you would college admissions and apply to reach and safety schools, both academically and financially.

Parent: I have friends who are attending various private and public schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from grades 5 on through 12. In sitting down with the other dads it is undoubtedly true that no school has done more to prepare post the outbreak of the pandemic then St Mark’s. Not only their children but their administration and teachers are out of this world!
Not only did the school literally review replace hundreds of things across the campus, they’ve also implemented a fantastic screening program, testing program, and communications program for SARS-COVID19.
I know that when selecting schools grades, scores and college admissions are the number one priority. I never thought I would pick a school based upon their ability to handle a medical global outbreak.
The school has literally blown us away! We are thankful that our son is there and hope that other schools can use them as a benchmark going into the winter of the pandemic. ... Read 74 reviews

Junior: My overall school experience has been very positive! The teachers(with 1 or 2 exceptions) and academics have been outstanding so far, and it seems like I can do whatever I put my mind to here. There are plenty of options for clubs, and plenty of motivated students who participate in them. When I first entered the school, I thought a lot of the students would be aloof trust-fund kids. However, for the majority of students, that thankfully doesn't hold true. My only 2 complaints are: 1)the math curriculum, which for me is too repetitive and not challenging enough; and 2)the behavior of the administration(especially during covid), which can be paternalistic at times. ... Sophomore: Nueva is an amazing school! There are so many opportunities all just waiting for anyone who is motivated. There is a 230+ page course catalog and a wide range of extracurriculars to take your passions to the next level. The students are kind and cool (everyone's smart but not everyone's a nerd). There are fun social events like dances, coffeehouses, musical performances, sports games, spirit rallies, and more! Parent: Brearley is a top notch, wonderful school! My 8-year-old daughter is thriving, happy and growing leaps and bounds every year. The Brearley community is warm, down to earth and diverse. The administration and the teachers will go above and beyond for your daughter and your family. While it has always been an academic powerhouse, it is also a school that encourages all of it's students to be creative and unique individuals, while learning to embrace Brearley's core values of "honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility and courage." Parent: I am parent whose children attend Riverdale Country School. The River Campus is such a warm and welcoming space for the younger children. At the Lower School, they create an environment where children are encouraged to explore and experiment, appreciate nature, and develop a true love of learning. My children enjoy school and are excited to attend everyday - as a parent, that means the world to me. My eldest child is now on the Hill Campus. The Upper School, offers students a challenging academic environment and many opportunities to get involved in their school community. I have found the teachers to be supportive yet have high expectations and encourage the students to reach their full potential. Our entire family has found community at Riverdale, it is truly an incredible place. ... Read 65 reviews

Alum: Horace Mann has developed to be more diverse, inclusive staff wise in recent years which makes the school experience much better. Alum: Coming in the eighth grade from public school in Greenwich Ct it was a bit of a shock. But the five years there were better experience than college. And it was a personal heaven for me in a big city. I don’t contribute to many requesters but there is always enough for Collegiate School. If I had son again and lived in NYC, that where he would go. Freshman: This is my first year at GDS, and so far it's been amazing! All of my teachers are excellent, the classes are challenging, and I've been learning so much. I've been able to go in person two days a week, which is great, and most of my teachers have been on campus as well. Senior: While yes, the academics are incredibly rigorous, and Dalton prepares us well for equally rigorous collegiate study, the methods with which certain students achieve in the high-school are often questionable, often downright immoral. 'Tutors' are rampant, brown-nosing is expected and encouraged, and the strict rules against cheating are often selectively enforced. Often success is directly correlated with socio-economic class, and what tier of donor you are. The fact is though, Dalton is almost certainly the least heinous offender of the aforementioned shady business within the private school circle, and the administration is at least attempting to reform itself. So if you are committed to sending your child to an elite/elitist NYC school, Dalton is probably your best option. ... Read 81 reviews

Whether that be in academics, athletics, the arts, or in social justice, everything these students do is done at the highest caliber. We love to learn and bond through knowledge! Parent: As a parent of current poly students, I can attest to the quality of the teachers, faculty, student body and facilities. Poly is academically rigorous and sets high expectations for its students while providing the scholastic and emotional support needed to ensure every student has an opportunity to succeed. Poly also does an admirable job incorporating character building into their curriculum. Compassion, service, self awareness, diversity,
inclusion, tolerance and integrity are all modeled and reinforced throughout the campus at every grade level. Poly can of course continue to work on its diversity by reaching out to the larger Los Angles community to attract a more broad coalition of students. That said, we could not be happier. Most importantly our children (middle and high school) feel happy, proud, challenged, accepted, supported and seen. ... Read 106 reviews

Parent: Sidwell has provided my children with an exceptional academic experience emphasizing critical thinking and problem solving, writing and communications, and quantitative reasoning. The workload has been substantial at times, but always enriching and interesting (i.e., rarely if ever busywork) and will fully prepare students for the rigors they'll experience in college and beyond.
