Pittsburgh Marathon 2025: Record-Breaking Finishes and Heartwarming Moments

Pittsburgh, PA – May 4, 2025 – The 2025 Pittsburgh Marathon delivered thrilling performances, emotional triumphs, and a record-breaking finish under perfect racing conditions Sunday morning. Over 30,000 runners from across the globe participated in the event, which featured the full marathon, half marathon, and relay races.

Elite Runners Shatter Records

In a stunning display of speed, Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku crossed the finish line first in the men’s division with a time of 2:06:48, breaking the previous course record by nearly a minute. On the women’s side, Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei dominated with a time of 2:22:15, also setting a new Pittsburgh Marathon record.

'The crowd energy was incredible—I could hear them cheering the whole way,' said Worku after his victory. Jepkosgei added, 'The hills were tough, but I trained for them, and it paid off.'

Local Heroes Shine

Pittsburgh’s own Ryan Smith, a 28-year-old teacher and amateur runner, stunned spectators by finishing as the top American in the men’s race with a personal best of 2:14:30. Meanwhile, Megan Harris, a nurse from Squirrel Hill, won the women’s half marathon, dedicating her race to her late father, a longtime marathon volunteer.

Inspiration on the Course

The marathon also celebrated resilience and community. David Rodriguez, a U.S. Army veteran who lost his leg in service, completed the half marathon using a prosthetic, greeted by roaring applause at the finish line. Additionally, Team True Courage, a group of cancer survivors and their supporters, raised over $500,000 for oncology research.

A City United

Spectators lined the 26.2-mile course, waving signs, blasting music, and offering high-fives. The iconic stretch across the Roberto Clemente Bridge provided a breathtaking backdrop as runners pushed toward the finish.

'This is what Pittsburgh is all about—community, perseverance, and pride,' said Mayor Ed Gainey, who cheered on runners at the finish line.

With another successful year in the books, organizers are already looking ahead to 2026, promising an even bigger and better event.
