Naomi Osaka Announces Comeback with New Foundation to Support Mental Health in Sports

Los Angeles, May 3, 2025 – Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced her highly anticipated return to professional tennis, alongside the launch of her new initiative, the PlayFree Foundation, aimed at supporting athletes' mental health and well-being.

The 27-year-old former World No. 1, who stepped away from the sport in 2023 to focus on her mental health and family, revealed her plans in an emotional Instagram post.

'I’ve spent the last two years learning, growing, and most importantly, healing,' Osaka wrote. 'Tennis will always be a part of me, and I’m ready to return—but this time, with a bigger purpose. Through PlayFree, I want to ensure no athlete ever feels alone in their struggles.'

The PlayFree Foundation will provide resources, therapy access, and mentorship programs for young athletes facing pressure in competitive sports. Osaka, who has been open about her own battles with anxiety and depression, emphasized the need for systemic change in how mental health is addressed in athletics.

Her return to the court is set for the 2025 US Open, where she’ll also serve as an ambassador for mental health awareness. Tennis analysts speculate she could shake up the rankings once again, with rivals like Iga Świątek and Coco Gauff expressing excitement over her comeback.

'Naomi’s voice has always been powerful—on and off the court,' said Billie Jean King in a statement. 'This is more than a return; it’s a movement.'
