The precedent user was surprised by the happy ending.First thing to bear in mind is that it is a novel by Alphonse Daudet transferred to the screen. And as this novel was partly autobiographic ,the screenplay could not modify it.. Like in the novel, the most interesting part is the first one:as his family was broke ,Daniel Eyssette had to work as a supervisor in a school. This was inspired by Daudet's salad days as he was himself a supervisor .The marvelous scene when Daniel tells his "little" pupils about the misfortunes of Jeannot Lapin (Johnny Rabbit) has been developed with good results;the arrogant marquis and his horrid son are present too;so is the slick fencing master who takes advantage of Daniel's poetic skills . The second part is not as endearing ,because Maurice Cloche did not completely succeed in making us feel the love between the two brothers .Daniel called his beloved brother "my mother Jacques" .Fortunately ,this second part is dominated by Arletty ,as Irma Borel (Borel means Bourreau (= torturer),says Daniel),who steals every scene she's in as usual.Although her presence on the screen does not exceed 15 min,she makes all those minutes count. Like the secondary school staff or the fencing master,Irma Borel laughs at this poor boy, who, like the good vicar said, will stay a child for life. Robert Lynen had already portrayed another poor boy,"Poil de Carotte" (=Carotte top) in Duvivier's second version of the novel by Jules Renard in 1932.

"A Toast!" From the 1898 Jane Segwick translation

^ ABE Books: Exclusive Interview with Yann Martel . "I remember the first time I cried reading a book. It was a novel by Alphonse Daudet, an autobiography called Le Petit Chose or "The Little Thing" which was a nickname the author received as a child. It was a heartbreaking story and I remember hiding in the bathroom to sob. It took me by surprise that I could be moved so much by a book. I was ten years old."

Le Petit Chose (1868), translated into English as Little Good-For-Nothing (1878, Mary Neal Sherwood) and Little What's-His-Name (1898, Jane Minot Sedgwick), is an autobiographical memoir by French author Alphonse Daudet .

Taking its title from the author's nickname, it recounts Daudet's early years from childhood, through boarding school and finally to Paris and his first successes as an author. It was Daudet's first published, though not first written, work.

Canadian author Yann Martel ( Life of Pi ), in talking about his most memorable childhood book, recalled Le Petit Chose , saying that he read it when he was ten years old, and that it was the first time he found a book so heartbreaking that it moved him to tears. [1]

In 1938 the book was made into a movie of the same name by the French director Maurice Cloche . It starred Arletty , Marianne Oswald , and Marcelle Barry in the leading roles and featured then 14-year-old classical guitarist Ida Presti in a supporting role as a guitar player. [2]
