Amber Alert Issued for Abducted Child in Texas

AMBER ALERT ISSUED FOR MISSING 8-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN TEXAS; SUSPECT APPREHENDED AFTER STATEWIDE SEARCH

Houston, TX – June 5, 2024 – An AMBER Alert was issued early this morning for 8-year-old Sophia Martinez after she was allegedly abducted from her Houston neighborhood. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old David Rolfe, was arrested hours later near the Texas-Oklahoma border following a tip from an alert truck driver.

Details of the Abduction

According to Houston Police, Sophia was last seen playing in her front yard around 4:30 p.m. yesterday. Witnesses reported seeing a man in a black SUV approach the child before she disappeared. Surveillance footage later confirmed the suspect’s vehicle, leading to the activation of the AMBER Alert at 3:15 a.m.

Swift Public Response Leads to Arrest

The AMBER Alert, broadcast across Texas and neighboring states, prompted hundreds of calls to law enforcement. A truck driver near Gainesville, TX, spotted the suspect’s vehicle at a rest stop and immediately notified police. Texas DPS troopers and local deputies surrounded the area, arresting Rolfe without incident. Sophia was found unharmed in the backseat.

Suspect Had Prior Criminal Record

Court records reveal Rolfe has a history of drug-related offenses and a prior arrest for child endangerment in 2019. Authorities are investigating whether he had any prior contact with the victim’s family.

Relief and Gratitude

Sophia’s mother, Maria Martinez, tearfully thanked law enforcement and the public at a press conference: 'I was so scared, but because of everyone who shared the alert and called the police, my baby is safe.'

Texas Governor Greg Abbott praised the coordinated effort, calling it 'a testament to the power of the AMBER Alert system and vigilant communities.'

The investigation remains ongoing, with Rolfe facing charges of kidnapping and unlawful restraint.
