The Disappearance of Keeper Elias Shaw

In the winter of 1893, the Peninsula Lighthouse stood sentinel over the treacherous rocks of the northern coast. Its keeper, Elias Shaw, was a quiet, dependable man—until the night he vanished without a trace.

The last log entry, smeared with what looked like wet salt or blood, read:
'The light has gone wrong. It’s not just the lens—something is inside. It watches from the tower. God help me, it’s coming down.'

When the relief keeper arrived, the lamp still burned, but the door to the lantern room was barred from the inside. Shaw’s coat and boots were found neatly placed at the base of the stairs, as if he had simply… stepped out of them.

The Cursed Lens

Locals whispered that the lighthouse’s original Fresnel lens was cursed. Salvaged from a shipwreck in 1872, the Lady’s Gambit, it was said the glass was forged with a silver that wasn’t silver—something older, darker. Sailors claimed the light sometimes burned green, luring ships toward the rocks instead of warning them away.

After Shaw’s disappearance, three more keepers took the post. Two went mad, babbling about 'faces in the glass.' The third, Thomas Hargrove, was found dead at his desk in 1901, his hands clutching his own removed eyes. The coroner ruled it suicide. The light was automated soon after.

A shadowy figure seen peering from the lantern room—but only when no one is inside.

In 2018, a YouTuber named Mark Riggs broke into the decommissioned lighthouse for a livestream. The video cut out after a distorted voice whispered, 'You shouldn’t have come back.' Riggs was found the next morning, unconscious at the base of the tower, his camera footage corrupted beyond recovery.

Some believe Elias Shaw didn’t vanish—he ascended, absorbed by the light itself. Others say the lens is a doorway, and whatever took Shaw is still waiting… feeding on those who linger too long.
