Local Hero Hannah Dugan Saves Family from House Fire

Springfield, IL — May 23, 2024

In an act of incredible bravery, 28-year-old nurse Hannah Dugan rescued a family of four from a burning home in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The fire broke out just after 2:00 a.m. on Elm Street, sending thick smoke into the air and waking neighbors.

Dugan, who was returning home from a late shift at Springfield General Hospital, noticed the flames and immediately sprang into action. Without hesitation, she rushed to the house, banging on doors and shouting to alert the sleeping family inside.

'I just reacted,' Dugan said in a press conference later that day. 'I saw the smoke and knew people could be in danger. I didn’t think—I just ran.'

After helping the parents and their two young children escape safely, Dugan administered first aid to one of the children, who had minor smoke inhalation. Firefighters arrived shortly after and extinguished the blaze, which officials believe was caused by an electrical malfunction.

Springfield Fire Chief Mark Reynolds praised Dugan’s quick thinking. 'Her actions undoubtedly saved lives tonight. She’s a true hero.'

The family, though shaken, expressed their deep gratitude. 'We owe Hannah everything,' said father James Carter. 'She risked her life for us.'

Dugan, modest about her heroism, insists she was just in the right place at the right time. But for the Carter family and the Springfield community, she’s nothing short of extraordinary.
