Paco's Heroic Journey on World Donkey Day

The Legend of World Donkey Day

In the small, sun-drenched village of San Burrito, nestled between rolling hills and golden fields, there lived a humble donkey named Paco. Paco wasn’t just any donkey—he was the hardest worker in the village, carrying loads of firewood, pulling carts of fresh produce, and even giving joyful rides to the village children.

But despite his tireless efforts, the villagers often took Paco for granted. 'Donkeys are just beasts of burden,' they’d say, never stopping to appreciate his loyalty and kindness.

One day, a terrible drought struck San Burrito. Crops withered, the river dried up, and the villagers grew desperate. The elders decided to send a messenger to the neighboring kingdom to seek help, but the journey was long and treacherous—through rocky cliffs and scorching deserts.

No horse or mule was strong enough to make the trip… except for Paco.

With a determined bray, Paco set off, carrying sacks of letters and gifts for the king. For seven days and seven nights, he trekked without rest, his hooves bruised and his coat dusty. Finally, he arrived at the palace gates, collapsing from exhaustion just as the king’s guards found him.

Moved by Paco’s sacrifice, the king sent wagons of food, water, and seeds back to San Burrito, saving the village from ruin. When Paco returned, the villagers wept with gratitude, realizing how much they owed to their brave, humble donkey.

From that day on, May 8th was declared World Donkey Day—a day to honor all donkeys for their strength, patience, and unwavering service. People around the world now celebrate by giving donkeys extra carrots, brushing their coats, and sharing stories of their incredible contributions.

And as for Paco? He spent his remaining years in peace, treated like the hero he truly was.
