Blizzard’s Overwatch is one of the most massive multiplayer first-person shooters in the world right now. It has an enormous community and dozens of dedicated fans across Xbox, PS4, and Windows. However, with compatibility software, you can enjoy this game on Linux too.
Note: Overwatch is a Windows video game. When running it on Linux, you will run into issues and it may not work for you. Be sure to refer to the Overwatch WineHQ page for help troubleshooting.
According to popular consensus among Linux users, the version of Wine currently available on most Linux distributions isn’t good enough. It doesn’t render BattleNet or Overwatch correctly, and you won’t be able to play the game correctly if you go ahead with this tutorial without updating Wine.
On Addictivetips, we have a tutorial that goes over how to install Wine-Staging ; the version of Wine that works best with Overwatch on Linux. With that said, the tutorial is from April of this year. Since then, Wine-Staging has changed, commands may slightly differ, repositories may have changed URLs, etc. For this reason, we’ll briefly go over how to get Wine-Staging working on Linux. Open up a terminal window and follow the directions that match your OS.
On a Linux distribution that doesn’t have Wine-Staging? You’ll need to build the software from source, via GitHub. Head over to the Wine-Staging page , read the directions and learn how to build the latest Wine-Staging packages for your Linux operating system.
Now that your version of Wine is the Staging branch, we can tweak it so that OverWatch will run correctly. To tweak Wine, press Ctrl + F2 on the keyboard and open up your desktop’s command-launcher. Then, in the launcher, write:
Press Enter on the keyboard to launch the Wine configuration app on Linux. Then, look to “Windows version”, change it to “Windows 10” and click the apply button.
After setting your version of Windows in Wine to Windows 10, click on the “Staging” tab in WineCFG. Check the boxes next to “Enable VAAPI” and “Enable CSMT”. Select “Apply” to set the changes to Wine.
Blizzard’s Overwatch game will only install on a computer via the BattleNet PC gaming client. Thankfully, BattleNet works pretty well on Linux.
To get BattleNet working on Linux, you won’t be able to use a terminal-based downloading tool like Wget or cURL. Instead, you will need to download the program manually, by heading over to the BattleNet website .
As you are on Linux, the BattleNet EXE will not automatically open. To launch the program, open up your Linux file manager and click on “Downloads.” Then, find the BattleNet EXE file and double-click on it to run it with Wine. Alternatively, open up a terminal, CD into the ~/Downloads directory and start it via the command-line.
Go through the installation setup process and get BattleNet up and running on your Linux PC. When the installation completes, close the installation wizard, open your application menu
Setting up BattleNet on Linux doesn’t set up Overwatch. It’s a game that must be downloaded and installed separately via the game client. To install Overwatch on Linux via Wine, open up the BattleNet application and log in with your username and password.
Note: if installing Overwatch through Wine doesn’t work, feel free to try the Winepak version of the game .
Once logged into BattleNet, the program will try to scan your Linux computer for “existing games.” If the program finds any previously set-up Blizzard games, it’ll process the data and add it to the launcher so you can play it.
Click on the “Overwatch” logo on the side, purchase the game (if you don’t already own it) and install it to the system. When Overwatch is done installing, open up your application menu, find the “Wine” section and click on “Overwatch” to start playing!

This procedure should work on any up-to-date Linux distribution.
A working Linux install with a root privileges and a medium to high end graphic card with the latest drivers.
For over a year now, one game has been the white whale for Linux gamers. That game, of course, is Overwatch. For many, it’s a game that should have been simple. Every other Blizzard game has had a Mac port and worked fine under Wine. Overwatch has been that one glaring exception.
Finally, with the aid of some specialized Wine patches, Overwatch is within reach of Linux gamers, provided they have some decent hardware. You don’t need a top-of-the-line monster, but Overwatch doesn’t run nearly as efficiently as it does natively on Windows, so account for the resource sink when you’re planning to run the game.
There is an automatic installer from Lutris , but in testing it for this guide, it was out-of-date and didn’t work. This procedure is essentially a manual version of that installer.
There is a specially patched version of Wine for playing Overwatch. This means a couple of things. First, it’s not going to be in your distribution’s repositories, unless you count Arch’s AUR . Next, it means that you’ll need to install it separately and maintain a separate Wine prefix for Overwatch.
You have two options for installing Wine Overwatch. You can build it from source from Git , or you can download a pre-complied tarball from the Lutris project. The tarball is much easier, so that’s the one this guide will cover.
Head over to the Lutris repository for its “runner” applications. Find the latest release of wine-overwatch and download it. The absolute minimum version that you need is 2.13 . The latest as of this article is 2.14 .
Unzip the tarball in a directory where you want to run that version of Wine from.
You can always rename the resulting folder for convenience. For the purposes of this guide, it’ll be renamed to wine-overwatch .
Next, you’re going to have to set up your Wine prefix for Overwatch. This is entirely specific to Overwatch, so you’re probably not going to run anything else under this prefix.
Create the prefix by specifying the prefix location along with the path to the version of wine being used.
Your command should look something like this.
That will open up the Wine configuration and generate your prefix. Install .Net/Mono and Gecko when asked.
First, if your Windows version isn’t set to Windows 7, do so. The Blizzard App won’t install otherwise.
Head to the Staging tab and check off the options for CMST and VAAPI. Apply your settings and close.
You can get the Overwatch/Blizzard App installer from Blizzard’s download page . It really doesn’t matter if you download the Overwatch one or the regular Blizzard App. They’ll both install the same thing.
When you have the installer, open it up with Wine Overwatch.
Follow the installation instructions like you normally would. Create a Blizzard account, if you don’t already have one, and follow the installation procedure. Its all very self-explanatory.
If Overwatch doesn’t immediately start downloading after the Blizzard App is installed and you’re logged in, install it via the Blizzard App.
In either case, Overwatch will take some time to download. It’s an over 10GB install.
Once the download completes, you can press the button on the launcher to play the game. The default settings are probably far from optimal, though, so once you get through the opening, change them.
It’s a good idea to set the kill cam to Off in the game settings in virtually all scenarios. Lots of other things are conditional.
Most people will find that Low settings show the best performance and may not get a playable game otherwise. Manually setting the refresh rate of Overwatch to match your monitor’s refresh rate can smooth things out too.
For users of tiling window managers, it seems like Windowed Borderless is the best option. Others can trigger stuttering or unusual character movement. You should also set your Overwatch window to floating .
Almost universally, Overwatch suffers from framerate drops. The drops are less drastic with more robust graphics cards. For right now, it’s just something that Linux gamers will need to deal with.
In the future, you’ll need to run Overwatch by specifying many of the same parameters that you needed to run the installer. Your command will look like the one below.
Yeah, that is very obnoxious. You’re best creating an alias or writing a script and adding it to your PATH or throwing it in /usr/bin . Any of those would greatly simplify the process.
This process is subject to change. Wine Overwatch is under active development, and Blizzard can change their game without warning. It seems, though, like continual progress is being made to stabilize Overwatch in Wine.

Hi everyone. Just wondering, has anyone been successful in playing OW in Linux?
There's been some posts about it on r/linux_gaming using WINE I think, but the consensus seems to be there's a snowballs chance in hell of there ever being a linux client.
Yea, I saw those, saw a video on YouTube from few months back but it still looks garbage
Just yesterday I tried out this the installation worked well. The game started without issues, and I also got stable 130 FPS in the menu, but even in the practice range my FPS dropped down into single digits, sadly. Running it on an i7-4770K and GTX760.
It is working, and playable but not on a competitive leven with high and stable FPS :(
So it works, but still needs work then. Would it be safe to say that in a few months we will be able to enjoy OW in linux?
Yo Yo. Computer scientist here. I just want add some to this problem even though the answer has already pretty much been "no."
Yes you can use Wine Staging. However, that isessentially a virtualization software which translates the Windows commands into Linux commands. That means more or less, you have twice as many things to process overall.
To really utilize the power of Linux, you need to use it as is.
Blizz supporting (fully) linux would be good for them as developers and Overwatch.
Also, a Linux machine that could run Overwatch natively would almost definitely yeild better performance than a Windows machine on the same hardware.
If all games were released on Linux, I'd have almost no reason to have a Windows PC. Especially now that my favorite programming language (C#) can be run on Linux with .NET Core.
If Blizzard would have done the whole Overwatch Engine with Vulkan instead of DirectX11, then it could work natively on Linux. I hope more developers will use Vulkan in the future.
However, that isessentially a virtualization software which translates the Windows commands into Linux commands. That means more or less, you have twice as many things to process overall.
This is an utterly incorrect description of how both Wine and virtualisation works. A "computer scientist" should know better.
Get them to implement Vulkan, and you will get full performance even through Wine.
If you are feeling bold, and have two GPUs, you could always try doing VGA passthrough and giving one of the GPUs to a windows VM. Otherwise, there isn't a good solution for native linux.
Upvoting for visibility, good question
Thanks! I'm sure this question was asked around a couple of times before. But maybe there's a more recent update on this
Depending on your hardware, you could use PCIe passthrough and a VM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16dbAUrtMX4
