I expect this question has been answered but i cant seem to find a response from anyone at blizzard. I have 1000’s of hours of FPS experience using 4:3 aspect ratio and it would be a real improvement if this was supported in overwatch.
I am interested in hearing what blizzard’s reasoning is behind disallowing 4:3 as it wouldn’t hurt anyone.
Probably the same reason why they don’t support ultra wide aspect ratios.
I remember Kaplin saying that it gave the player an advantage which is why they didn’t add it in.
All the good shooters accept wide screen gaming, Oh only blizzard skips it. Mayb they ask money for it as a widescreen DLC only 60 euros.
Oh, that makes sense. While widescreen gives you more horizontal FOV, a 4:3 aspect ratio would give you more vertical FOV. The unfair advantage is also the reason why you can’t change your FOV that much.
But what if a widescreen/4:3 apect ratio would be programmed to give you less FOV than usual? The only thing that needs to be added is a warning that changing to those mode decreases your FOV, causing a disadvantage.
It would be basically a cropped version of the deafult aspect ratio.
I don’t know how aspect ratios work thus I don’t know if that is possible or not.
There are 4:3 resolutions, but they are broken and also can’t play stretched.

I just got this game and have no idea what I'm doing, for some reason I can't change to 4:3 aspect ratio, but resolution is correctly set.
I tried to restart the game but it still wouldn't set. Even when I changed the game to windowed or borderless window it didn't change it.
Very strange but, anyone else experienced?
EDIT: Welp, they added "21:9" so I guess they just want 4:3 players to get fucked...
There is no actual 4:3 support. It'll always enforce a widescreen ratio, so picking a 4:3 resolution will result in letterboxing.
Um, that doesn't sound right so I'll wait for a second opinion, but thanks for the info I'll look into it.

I am personally a CSGO player, and play with a 4:3 stretched resolution. Because of this, there is no way for me to get the same feel as I would normally with CSGO. I cannot really get invested in the game, as I will not be able to transfer any skills I have had from any other shooters, and it will take a while for me to get used to each sensitivity.
Another thing I have heard is that 4:3 stretched gives an unfair advantage. This is simply not true. Targets are still the same size, but just appear larger. You also get a reduction in horizontal FOV. Because of this, targets also appear to move horizontally more quickly.
This is not likely to happen soon as this is a similar argument to the 21:9 debate .
Does Overwatch not support 4:3 at all?
If it does, then the method of upscaling can be set on your GPU (e.g. via Nvidia Control Panel) and doesn’t need to happen within Overwatch.
Overwatch has no 4:3 support. If you play on a 4:3 resolution then there is a widescreen letterbox.
does the new overwatch “2.0” support 4:3 if it doesnt why please like like relaly man like really man please we all will most of us dont want our aim to like get ruined just caouse some game doesnt support some aspect ratio that we really need please try to make it happen
does the new overwatch “2.0” support 4:3
4:3 and widescreen monitors are rare, and not worth the time to create support for. This was addressed on the old forums (now removed), and the developers said this (paraphrased).
Having different monitor sizes can give advantages/disadvantages and is a slippery slope for competitive shooters. Because Overwatch 2 will have both PvE and PvP elements, it’s not likely their stance will change.
