I'm having trouble oiling my babies' nipples as my balls get in the way ... no wait, hmmm, this thread isn't starting too well ... let me begin again

I have a couple of machines with oil nipples. I've been placing the tip of the oil can's hose over the little ball and trying to get a good solid seal in order to pump oil into the fitting. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but some oil always escapes. Sometimes the ball doesn't even unseat at all and I get a real mess when I remove the tip. It had me thinking the other day, there surely MUST be a better way! Sooo, I was wondering what others here do in this situation? Is it possible to adapt a grease gun's hose or are they subtly different fittings? I'd like to be able to consistently inject the appropriate amount of oil in each fitting, less mess would certainly be nice, but more of a concern is where I think I've injected some oil, but perhaps the reality is that none went in?

Pete

Are you using the correct tipped oil can? Ball oilers require a special tip to work effectively.

You just have to have the right oil cans. They are not all made equal even though you may think so. Look for Eagle brand are Golden rod The only two good brands of oil cans. Just ask me how i know. Cause I have about 20 different kinds till I found out what does and what does not work.

Hi,

I got the same problems. I think it must be old age.

What I do is I slipped a short piece of plastic fish tank air line over the end my oil can. Gives snug fit over the fitting face and the pressure of the oil can will depress the ball to allow oil to flow in. Still get a little dribble once in while, but it's much easier than it was.

If you think you understand what is going on, you haven't been paying attention.

I just have a cheap Chinese oil can and it works fine. The end of the tip needs to be a bit smaller than the hole and tapered so it stops oil coming back out.
You are always going to get a little bit of leakage because most of the oil holes aren't perfectly round

Dave

Have you tried a "Pom Pom" oil gun Pete?

I don't know, probably not. Which is the "correct" one?

Dave, I think that's the exact same oil can as I have, well except yours is red so no doubt goes faster! However you have bigger balls than me.

My nipples look exactly like grease nipples so your cunning plan doesn't work for me I'm afraid. However it does demonstrate nicely the tip I mentioned I could change if required

PS Oh I just noticed I still had a page open from searching this last night. http://www.lathespares.co.uk/oil-nip...rd-lathe-p-528 It certainly looks the goods, but 30 quid for an oil can (plus postage to Oz) is getting a bit keen in my book. Cheaper than new slides I guess, but being the eternal tight-ass with money I don't think the German precision oil injector will be finding a home in my place any time soon!

One of these vetinary syringes works for me. Grind the tip of the needle down flat leaving enough of the angled end so you have a hole above the flat for the oil to come out

I have noticed in AU there is a huge variety of nipples out there...

Just checking out the nipples I have locked in the shed and their are a few different styles...

Chinese nipples tend to be flat, while british nipples tend to be perky, like a grease nipple but a bit different, more rounded.... Then some other nipples look identical to a grease nipple and you could mistakenly put the wrong lube in them causing all sorts of grief...

I suggest googling "nipple" and from there research some of the hits...

Yep, takes the right nipples as already mentioned - this is one of the Eagle brands--that rounded type tip will mate up with the nipple and get oil in it.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something........

Peter,
I have a similar oil can to Davo and it works quite well. Recently I replaced some oilers on my machines and found that the oil ones (probably from the UK) had smaller balls than the replacements from the US.
I find that oilers will leak a bit regardless but the key points seem to be that the oil can tip must be smaller than the hole in the oiler (to push the ball out of the way) and that the tip must be square to the hole for the best seal.
As you have a lathe you could probably turn up a better tip if the oil can one is not quite the goods.
Sometimes oilers don't work well because they get all gummed up or the balls jam. If you do have some duds shoot me a PM as I might be able to find some left over replacements to help out.

Michael

Groan I've just looked at what was going on with these oilers ... somebody has put grease through them. Groan, how hard is it, FFS!!

Fortunately the machines haven't done much work so there's no wear that I can see, however it basically means stripping the machines, getting all the grease out, and rebuilding them. The clue with the oilers was that I'd been getting a good hydraulic lock many times, so that when I removed the oil can (or syringe I tried too, which also worked well and being plastic yielded a little for a better seal), the oil spurted everywhere. It looks like getting the grease out of the oilers will be a PIA too!
