Ohio River Flooding Threatens Midwest Communities

Ohio River Reaches Critical Levels After Weeks of Heavy Rainfall

Cincinnati, OH – April 6, 2025 – The Ohio River has surged to near-flood stage following weeks of relentless rainfall across the Midwest, prompting concerns from local officials and residents in riverside communities.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the river’s water level in Cincinnati reached 52.3 feet—just shy of the flood stage of 52.5 feet—marking the highest level recorded in the past two years. Tributaries feeding into the Ohio River, including the Great Miami and Scioto Rivers, have also seen significant rises, exacerbating the situation.

Emergency management teams in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana are on high alert, with sandbagging efforts underway in low-lying areas such as Louisville, Evansville, and Portsmouth. Some minor flooding has already been reported in parks and farmland along the riverbanks.

'We’re closely monitoring the situation,' said Mark Hebert, a spokesperson for the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO). 'If rainfall continues, we could see moderate flooding in vulnerable areas by early next week.'

Meteorologists attribute the rising waters to a stalled weather system that has dumped over 8 inches of rain across parts of the Ohio Valley in the last month. While no mandatory evacuations have been issued yet, officials urge residents to stay informed and prepare for possible road closures.

Barge traffic along the river has also been affected, with the U.S. Coast Guard implementing speed restrictions to reduce wake damage near swollen levees. The economic impact could be significant if shipping delays persist.

As communities brace for potential flooding, volunteers and local organizations are mobilizing to assist those at risk. The Red Cross has set up emergency shelters on standby in case conditions worsen.

For now, all eyes remain on the skies—and the rising river.
