The day I arrived I settled into my villa in Matemwe and relaxed by the pool. Right outside the walls of the villas was the Matemwe village where all the locals lived. When we pulled up there were children, chickens, and cows hanging around outside. The next day I went scuba diving with One Ocean a few minutes down the beach. After the first dive we got back on the boat and someone pointed out fins in the water not too far away. I grabbed my mask and fins and jumped back in to swim after them. There were a group of wild dolphins and I was swimming right with them. They have a dolphin tour down at the south end of the island but there was no need for me to do that with this added bonus I got from scuba diving. In between dives they served us with some refreshments and then we got back in the water. After the second dive the boat drives to the shore and we have to take a bus to get back because of the tide change. For the rest of the day I hung out by the pool again until it was time for dinner. They take minimum 50 mins to prepare anything. I ordered chicken so perhaps he caught it, slaughtered it, then cooked it? The next day I went scuba diving again. I loved getting back under the water. I really miss it from my last trip. I got to see an octopus for the first time. Again we saw dolphins in between dives. Jumped in the water and got some more videos of them. This time there was an even bigger group but they kept moving along. The day before they actually hung around with me. After diving was over for the day I went back to my villa and then took a walk on the beach. The beach is a part of the village so there were a group of kids hanging out in the shade. They always say jambo hello in Swahili. One of the kids spoke a little bit of English and had a soccer ball. A few of us kicked it around for a couple of minutes. As we were kicking the ball around a guy around my age or maybe a little older came over and asked to take me to see the village and the school. I decided to pass to be on the safe side. On Tuesday I went on a tour of the spice farm. I got to see and smell all the different spices and fruits they use for cooking. They also use many of them as medicine by crushing it up into powder and mixing it with milk. From what I was told pepper is used to help with lactation, lemongrass helps keep mosquitoes away, custard apple is good for people with cancer, turmeric helps with stomach ache, cinnamon helps increase appetite and is good for people with diabetes, and marijuana leaves help with ear aches. Nutmeg is an aphrodisiac and gets you high. He explained that they give it to woman before weddings so they are not so nervous when meeting all the new family members. As we were walking around the farm they weaved me a basket and crown and gave me a fresh coconut to drink. After the spice farm I went to Prison Island. In my personal opinion it was a waste of money and time. I was there for all of 15 mins maybe. I saw the tortoises that the island protects and the prison. The prison was actually never used for people to serve time but instead turned into a quarantine during the bubonic plague. I then made my way to Nungwi where I would be staying at Highland Bungalows. I figured since I had the time I should spend time in different parts of the island. Yesterday I rented a bicycle and went to the Tazari caves and Fukuchani Ruins and village. The brakes were opposite from the bikes we have at home. The caves were only recently discovered in Saw a bunch of bats and some nasty spiders. The guy who gave me the tour of the ruins and village actually lived there and welcomed me into his house where I met his wife and one year old daughter. His wife was cooking on the floor over a small fire she made with sticks. While walking through the village all the children started following me around. After biking around I went to Nungwi beach for a bit. Definitely a more touristy area. Matemwe was quite and relaxed, I barely saw anyone there. Along the beach there are hotels, restaurants and bars. As I was sitting on the beach a local woman had a bucket full of octopus that she layed out in the sand and started beating them with a stick. One of the guys told me it makes it softer for chewing. Today I came to Stone Town. I started off walking around and stopped to get some sugarcane juice where I met a guy from Dubai. He was asking about my travels and when I told him I was coming there he gave me his information to contact him. Then he invited me to join him and his friend for the day. They had a rental car so we took a ride to the south part of the island and went to the beach. Along the way we stopped for some fresh coconut juice and bananas. Then at night we went to Forodhani market for dinner. I got to try Urojo Zanzibar mix that someone in Moshi recommended to me. All the tables pretty much had the same thing sugarcane juice, fish, chicken, and beef on a stick, chicken shawarma and Zanzibar pizza. Not like pizza at home, more like a stuffed pancake. You get used to it after a while. The scuba diving and swimming with the dolphins was awesome though. Share this: Tweet. Leave some love. Happy to answer any questions as well! Cancel reply. Legislation: Zanzibar is an island of the coast of Tanzania in the indian ocean. You can get here by taking a 2 hour ferry from capitol Dar es Salaam. Island is relatively undeveloped other than resorts in some areas of coast. Law enforcement: along the coast i saw no official police and hotel security is mellow. Where to buy marijuana: on the beach anyone trying to sell key chains and wood carvings secretly wants to sell you some ganga or hashish. Also no payment up front is needed, however once a deal is agreed to, its frowned upon to back out. Marijuana prices: about 10 usd for 5 grams of south african best stuff can be seedy but does the trick in tropical paradise. Marijuana brands: i heard of simply ganga or south african, the south african typically a superior choice, and the hash, from two different guys seemed to be the same quality stuff.
