Notre Dame Lacrosse Captures Second Consecutive NCAA Championship in Thrilling Victory

Philadelphia, PA – The University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s lacrosse team cemented its dynasty with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over the University of Maryland Terrapins in the NCAA Championship game Monday at Lincoln Financial Field. The win secured Notre Dame’s second straight national title and solidified its place among the sport’s elite programs.

Led by Tewaaraton Award finalist Pat Kavanagh and a stifling defensive effort, the Irish (15-1) overcame a late surge from the Terrapins to claim their third championship in program history. Kavanagh, a senior attackman, tallied three goals and two assists, while goalkeeper Liam Entenmann made 14 crucial saves, including several in the final minutes to preserve the lead.

'This team never flinched,' said Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan, who has now guided the Irish to all three of their NCAA titles. 'We knew Maryland would make a run, but our guys stayed composed and made the plays when it mattered most.'

Notre Dame controlled much of the game, building a 9-5 lead early in the third quarter before Maryland (14-3) rallied with four unanswered goals to tie the game in the fourth. But the Irish responded with clutch scoring from Jake Taylor and Chris Kavanagh, Pat’s younger brother, to pull ahead for good.

The victory caps a dominant two-year run for Notre Dame, which has gone 31-2 since the start of the 2023 season. With key players like Entenmann and defenseman Shawn Lyght expected to return next year, the Irish are already early favorites to compete for a three-peat in 2025.

'This program is built on toughness and brotherhood,' said Pat Kavanagh, fighting back tears in his postgame interview. 'To go out like this with my teammates is something I’ll never forget.'

The championship drew a record crowd of 32,269 fans, further highlighting the growing popularity of college lacrosse. For Notre Dame, the win not only adds to its storied athletic legacy but also signals a new era of lacrosse supremacy.
