Troubleshooting issues with Telegram Notifications

Troubleshooting issues with Telegram Notifications

Telegram Support

1) Сheck that the app is connected to the Internet.

If there is no connection, check the following:

  • Make sure Airplane mode is off in your phone settings.
  • Check that you have enabled cellular data for Telegram.
  • In case your Wi-Fi has firewall restrictions in place, contact the network administrator.
  • Make sure that your VPN or other apps are not restricting Telegram from connecting to the internet.

2) Make sure notifications are enabled.

  • Telegram Settings > Notifications and Sounds, check that notifications are ON.
  • Check that notifications are enabled for the chat you need: open its profile, make sure notifications are ON.
  • Android: Check that notifications are not silent for the chat you need: chat profile > Notifications > Customize > Notification Style.
  • Telegram X for Android: If you see Blocked for notifications in Telegram Settings or in the chat profile, this means your system settings don't allow notifications for the corresponding chat category. To enable them, change the Notification Style value right in the app.
PS: Note that you will not get any notifications if you log out from Telegram.

3) Update your OS to the latest version available.

4) Make sure you are using the latest app version.

5) If you use Telegram on multiple devices, check that you haven't already viewed the message on another device.

6) If the steps above didn't help, there are a few platform-specific things to check.

iOS

  • Make sure that notifications for Telegram are ON in iOS Settings > Notifications > Telegram
  • Try this trick: Shut down Telegram (go to home screen, double tap home button, swipe upwards on Telegram, then go to iOS Settings, set alert style for Telegram to NONE). Re-launch Telegram, go to phone settings, set alert style back to banners.

Android

  • Make sure Google Play Services are installed on your phone and updated. GCM (Google's mobile notification service) is part of Google play services and it enables Telegram app to launch when it needs to show you notifications.
  • If you have a battery optimizer/Task Manager/Task Killer or something installed of that kind: please put Telegram on the list of allowed apps (whitelist). The detailed steps vary a lot depending on your device, you can find examples here.
  • Make sure you have free space in the internal memory of your device (not only the SD card). Check these tips to learn how you can save space on your device with Telegram.
  • Сheck that you have enabled WiFi or cellular data when your phone is in sleeping mode: Android Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Always keep Wi-Fi on during sleep.

For Android 9:

  • Сheck that your chats aren't configured to show notifications silently in Android settings > Apps > App Info > Telegram > Notifications > select a chat or chat category > Behaviour.
  • Android Settings > Wireless and networks > Data usage > Smart data saver > disable the data saver or enable unrestricted access for Telegram.
  • Android Settings > Apps > App Info > Telegram > Battery > turn on "Background activity".

For Android 8:

  • Telegram Settings > Notifications and Sounds, make sure that Importance is set to "High" or greater (less than "High" will silence notifications).
  • Android Settings > Data usage > Data saver > disable the data saver or enable unrestricted access for Telegram.
  • Android Settings > Apps > App Info > Telegram > Battery > turn on the 'Background activity' option.

For Android 7:

  • Android Settings > Data usage > Data saver > disable the data saver or enable unrestricted access for Telegram.
  • Make sure Telegram is excluded from Battery Optimisation: Android Settings > Battery > Battery Optimization > All apps > Telegram > Don't optimize.
  • If your phone is in "Don't disturb" mode, please enable high priority for Telegram notifications in Android Settings: Applications > Telegram > Notifications > set as priority

For Android 6:

  • Android Settings > Data usage > Cellular data usage > Telegram > Background data > Enable Unrestricted data usage.

For Android 5:

  • If you press the volume button on Android Lollipop (5.x), you will see not only the current volume but also the three settings: NO, ALL and IMPORTANT. They represent three types of notifications, and the NO setting mutes all notifications — even if you put Telegram on your 'Important' list in the Android settings.
  • Android Settings > Data usage > Cellular data usage > Telegram > Background data > Enable Unrestricted data usage.
  • Android Settings > Data usage > Menu > If you have selected "Restrict app background data", make sure Telegram is not restricted.
  • If your phone is in "Don't disturb" mode, please enable high priority for Telegram notifications in Android Settings: Applications > Telegram > Notifications > set as priority

For Android older than 5:

  • Telegram Settings > Notifications and Sounds. If the Keep Alive and Background Connection options are disabled, consider enabling both.
  • Android Settings > Wi-Fi > Menu > Advanced > turn off "Wi-Fi optimization".
  • Android Settings > Data usage > Menu/More > Auto-sync data >OK to enable auto-sync data.
  • When you're using an older Android device with little RAM, it may sometimes have issues with the notification service. This could lead Android to closing the service. If you think this is the case, regularly restarting the device could solve that issue.
