Rjukan is the iceclimbing capital of Norway, the most popular and closest area to Oslo, with a high concentration of waterfalls that freeze over in winter and makes an ideal iceclimbing training ground.

Iceclimbing on the cascades in the Rjukan area

Iceclimbing in Rjukan is an opportunity to try this winter sport in its classic conditions. At the same time, the level of safety during iceclimbing in Rjukan fully complies with high European safety standards.

The infrastructure of the Rjukan area not only makes it possible the comfortable stay, but also provides the opportunity to receive immediate professional assistance in the case of an accident. This option is extremely important to consider when choosing a location for iceclimbing, since this type of activity has a high risk category.

Iceclimbing on the cascades in the Rjukan area

The ice climbing area in Rjukan is limited by the cascades of the Vestfjorddallen gorge. All sectors for iceclimbing are located compactly and have an easy access to them - minimal time is spent on crossings and approaches to the cascades.

Rjukan is a unique place, rich in both natural attractions (the beautiful lakes Mosvatn and Tinsaya, the Rjukan waterfall) and as well the historical artifacts of recent world history.

In Rjukan there is an interesting local history museum dedicated to the history of the Rjukan Hydroelectric Power Station and the researches of “Heavy Water” - bright pages of the history of Norway and Europe during the Second World War.

Excursion to the Rjukan Local History Museum - Museum of History and 'Heavy Water'

A visit to the museum is included in the program of the MCS AlexClimb Rjukan Ice Climbing School.

Accommodation during the iceclimbing program is organized at the famous iceclimbing hostel "Old School Rjukan", where ice climbers from all over Europe gather during the winter season.

Combined with the Rockclimbing Course in Mallorca, the MCS AlexClimb Norway Iceclimbing Course provides an ideal year-long training plan for climbing intermediate and advanced alpine routes in the mountains.

Enjoying fjord sunset after completing the daily climbing routine

The course is coached by the international mountain guide and experienced climber Alex Trubachev - you can read his biography here. In the evenings after intensive days of iceclimbing, sitting comfortably by the fireplace, all members of our iceclimbing team share their plans and tell stories about traveling and climbing mountain peaks.

The Iceclimbing course is available in English and Spanish.

Schedule of the training iceclimbing program in Norway, Rjukan, season 2024"

N.B. The proposed version of the program contains additional options and is not the final schedule. Can only be considered as an example of the content of the Norway Rjukan Ice Climbing Course program.

The final option is agreed upon at the time of booking, based on the wishes of the participants and the program budget

Day 1 - International flight to Oslo, Norway. Transfer to Rjukan (1.45 hours), accommodation in the iceclimbing hostel "Old School Rjukan" (common room, dining room, kitchen, shower, sauna). Group meeting, detailed explanation of the program schedule, answers to the questions. We prepare dinner ourselves in the shared kitchen (as we do on all subsequent days)

Day 2 - Iceclimbing training on cascades - safety briefing, training in basic techniques for climbing vertical ice using crampons and ice axes.

Day 3 - Iceclimbing training on cascades - on this day we practice the skills acquired the day before and increase the volume of the lesson - during the training, participants do 8-10 ascents along relatively vertical ice routes with a height of at least 25 meters. Classes are held with a top rope belay organized by a guide.

Day 4 - Day of rest from iceclimbing - change of activity. As an option to fill out a day of rest - that can be ski touring (equipment rental is not included in the price of the program). We will make an exciting ski ascent to the highest peak of the Rjukan region, Gaustaoppen, with a height of 1883 meters and aa altitude gain of approximately 1000 meters from the start of the climb.

Climbing on the skis does not present any particular technical difficulty; no advanced skiing skills are required. All participants will be fully instructed and equipped with special ski touring equipment. The ascent takes place along a slope with a steepness of 10°-15°, the descent category is no more than a green route.

Day 5 - Excursion rest day - we rest completely from physical activity. On this day we will visit the Rjukan Local History Museum - the "Heavy Water Museum" - a unique opportunity to get introduced with the key events of the 20th century from a neutral political position. Bonus - a detailed history of the town of Rjukan and the Hydroelectric Power Plant

Day 6 - Iceclimbing training on the cascades, getting back into shape after two days without iceclimbing

Day 7 - This day is completely dedicated to training on the vertical ice of the Rjukan Cascades. Detailed attention is paid to the climbing techniques and organization of belay; participants are offered a lecture on the techniques for organizing belay points on ice using various climbing equipment. The volume of climbing on this day is 12-15 climbs along vertical routes.

Day 8 - We continue to increase the volume of iceclimbing and again train to conquer the vertical cascades of Rjukan. The third day of climbing in a row is a very difficult test for the participants of the program - the strength leaves and they have to use all the acquired technical iceclimbing skills in order to save energy for 10-12 ascents along the vertical routes of the cascade. We consolidate and improve our iceclimbing techniques.

Day 9 - Say goodbye to Rjukan and finish our iceclimbing program. Transfer to Oslo airport, return international flight
