Fans of The New York Times crossword puzzle were stunned this week when the elusive 'Nick' behind the popular 48 Hours puzzle was finally unmasked as Nicholas 'Nick' Everett, a 32-year-old linguistics professor from Chicago.

Everett, who has been constructing puzzles under the pseudonym 'Nick' for over five years, gained widespread acclaim for his clever, time-themed 48 Hours crossword, which became a fan favorite for its innovative clues and elegant grid design. The puzzle, which originally ran in 2019, resurfaced in a recent NYT Crossword anthology, reigniting interest in its mysterious creator.

In an exclusive interview, Everett admitted he never expected the attention. 'I just love playing with words and themes,' he said. 'The '48 Hours' idea came to me after pulling an all-nighter grading papers—I realized how much can happen in two days.'
