The small, tight-knit community of Joliet was rocked in the early hours of October 12, 1991, when a massive fire engulfed a local apartment complex, leaving six dead and dozens homeless. At first, authorities assumed it was a tragic accident—faulty wiring, perhaps, or a careless cigarette. But as the smoke cleared, a darker truth emerged: this was no accident. It was arson. And the person responsible was closer to the victims than anyone could have imagined.

The Fire

Just after 2 a.m., residents of the Joliet Arms Apartments were jolted awake by the smell of smoke and the sound of crackling flames. By the time firefighters arrived, the building’s east wing was fully engulfed. Despite their efforts, six people—including two children—perished in the blaze.

Investigators quickly zeroed in on the fire’s origin: a third-floor utility closet. The burn patterns and the presence of accelerant traces confirmed their suspicions—someone had set this fire intentionally.

The Suspects

The police interviewed dozens of tenants, but one name kept surfacing: Daniel 'Danny' Mercer, a 28-year-old maintenance worker at the complex. Mercer had been seen arguing with the building manager, Frank Kowalski, just days before the fire. Witnesses claimed Mercer had threatened Kowalski, saying, 'You’ll regret screwing me over.'

But Mercer wasn’t the only person with motive.

The Break in the Case

The investigation took a shocking turn when a gas station attendant came forward, reporting that Mercer had purchased a can of gasoline late on October 11. Surveillance footage confirmed it.

But Mercer insisted he was innocent. He claimed he bought the gas for his lawnmower—even though it was October. Then, a jailhouse informant dropped a bombshell: Mercer had allegedly confessed to setting the fire 'to teach Kowalski a lesson.'

The Twist

Just as prosecutors were preparing for trial, new evidence surfaced. A fire inspector re-examined the scene and found something missed in the initial sweep—a second point of origin. The fire hadn’t started in just one place; it had been set in two separate locations, suggesting an accomplice.

Then, an anonymous tip led detectives to Lila Dawson’s storage unit, where they discovered newspaper clippings about the fire, a half-empty gas can, and a journal detailing her hatred for Kowalski.

Had Mercer and Dawson worked together? Or was one of them being framed?

The Aftermath

Mercer was convicted of six counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Dawson, however, cut a deal—testifying that Mercer had manipulated her into helping him. She served only five years.
