The first half of the season is in the books, the All-Star break is behind us and the final stretch of the season is on the horizon as teams begin their push for the playoffs.
But before we jump too far ahead, it’s worth looking back to see what betting trends were most notable prior to the All-Star break and where bettors should be looking to find an edge using pre-All Star data from Bet Labs .
If you’ve been paying attention this season, the list of top moneyline teams won’t be much of a shock. The Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers have been the two most profitable teams to bet on the moneyline due in large part to the fact that they have blown past their preseason expectations.
Just behind them are the Miami Heat , a team with higher expectations but decimated by injuries for most of the season. The Heat have the highest return on investment as underdogs this season (72.5%) and are the second-most profitable team in the NBA behind the Grizzlies.
Last, but certainly not least, the Suns have the best record in the league by a comfortable margin and put together two separate double-digit win streaks this season, including their 18-game stretch from October through December.
Most Profitable ML Teams
(All dollar figures based on on $100 bets.)
Underdogs that closed at +300 or longer have been surprisingly profitable this season.

Teams in this spot are 36-145 straight up and the return on investment these huge underdogs (13.8%) would be the fourth-highest ROI over a full season, according to our Bet Labs database, which dates back to 2004-05.
Among all the underdog teams that have won outright in this spot, the Portland Trail Blazers stand out with a 4-4 record this season and 4-1 record since late January.

Due to how well the Grizzlies and Cavaliers have been on the moneyline, it’s no surprise the pair have crushed it against the spread. But the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls also stand out as valuable ATS teams.
Ironically, their respective successes against the spread fall on opposite ends of the spectrum.
The Thunder have been the most profitable underdogs in the NBA — 34-18-4 ATS in that spot — and would have netted a $100 bettor $1,316 per Bet Labs. The Heat have been sneaky-great underdogs to back in this spot — 13-5 ATS, $685 profit — with a 38.1% ROI in that situation, easily the highest mark in the league.
The Bulls, meanwhile, have cruised in the favorite role: 26-12-1 record ATS, netting $100 bettors a $1,163 profit. The Grizzlies (25-12-1) fall just behind them, with a net $1,090 profit as chalk this season.
The Dallas Mavericks have been at the top of this list for the bulk of the season. The combination of playing at the slowest Pace in the NBA (95.81) and a stout defense (107.2 points allowed per 100 possessions, fifth in the NBA) have turned the Mavs into an under machine.
Over a more recent stretch the Mavs have continued to separate themselves from the rest of the league in this category. Since Jan. 1, unders are 16-8 in Mavs games and profiting $100 bettors $655. Unders are 15-8-1 in Pelicans games over that same span with a $570 profit.
On the other side of that coin sit the Timberwolves , who have surged as a consistently-profitable over bet. Since Jan. 1, overs are 18-6 in Wolves games and profiting $100 bettors $1,020. Pacers games have been equally high-scoring in 2022, with overs going 17-7 in those games and have netting bettors $837.
Two of the top teams to bet for full-game spreads are also the best in the first half of games as well. This season, the Grizzlies and Cavaliers rank third and sixth respectively in first-half scoring margin, per NBA Advanced Stats , but are No. 1 and No. 2 ATS in that spot for bettors’ purposes.
The first half over in Pacers and Nuggets games are in their own tier when it comes to ROI and profit. Bets on both teams in that spot have an above 19% ROI with the Utah Jazz (7.1%) as next-closest team. Both clubs can fill it up in the first half — the Nuggets lead the NBA in Offensive Rating in first halves, the Pacers fourth.
When it comes to first half unders, the Pelicans and Celtics are the two best in that spot with the Thunder, Wizards and Trail Blazers just behind them.
Surprise, surprise: The Grizzlies top yet another list. In the second half of games, they have been the best in the league ATS. Their 19.9% ROI is easily tops in the league.
The Mavericks and Cavaliers clock in with the best records to the under in the second half of games and it isn’t surprising when you dig into the numbers. The Mavericks play at a Pace of 97.59 possessions in the first 24 minutes and that number drops by three possessions to 94.10 in the second half.
The dip for the Cavaliers is even more drastic, going from 99.98 (13th) in the first half to 93.93 in the second half.
It’s difficult to nail down profitability with live betting over the course of the season, but we can see that some teams are much better at coming back from a deficit at halftime than others.
Here’s a breakdown of the teams who have the best win rate when trailing this season, courtesy of NBA.com .
The league’s two best two teams are at the top of that list, and they don’t offer as many live betting opportunities due to their standing as elite teams.
Among the teams that trail at the half most, the Lakers and Raptors stick out as teams with win rates north of 35% when trailing at halftime.

Over/under betting is the second most popular type of wager in basketball behind point spread betting. In placing an NBA over/under bet you are predicting whether the total number of points scored in the matchup will be higher or lower than the predicted number. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best option.

Second only to the

point spread

bet in popularity is the over/under or NBA game total bet. Wagering on the total usually means choosing the number of combined points scored in an NBA game. Total bets are also available for points scored in the first half or second half of an NBA contest. It’s a different, yet fun way to take in the NBA action without having to choose the actual winner of a game.

Click the links to jump to each section.

An over/under bet is also called a totals bet and it refers to the combined amount of points scored in a game. The number is set by a sportsbook who projects the number of points that will unfold in the match. As a bettor, you select if the total number of points scored by both teams will be over or under the set total.

This is different than betting on the

moneyline

or

spread

, because you are not selecting which team will win, or if they will cover the spread, you are only betting on the total number of points scored.

The approach taken for this type of NBA wager is inferred by its name - a bettor is placing a wager based on the total number of combined points that will be scored by both teams in an NBA contest. Sports books that offer NBA over/under bets provide a total for a particular NBA game. Sports bettors can place a bet on whether the game will go over the total or under the total. The winner of the contest is of no consequence when betting over/unders – a bettor making a wager on an NBA total is simply rooting for a lot of scoring or minimal scoring.

Below is an example of how a typical NBA over/under line offered by a sports book looks:

If you wager on the over in this NBA contest, the total number of points scored in the game must be 212 or higher for you to win. If you wager on the under, the number of points scored in the game must be 210 or lower for your wager to be successful.

Essentially, the combined points scored by both teams is what is in play. For this wager, a final score of 114-100 (214 total) is essentially the same as 110-104 (214 total). If the game lands on exactly 211 points – the exact total posted by the sports book in the Lakers vs Knicks example above, your bet is refunded. Over/under totals posted by the sports book will vary from game to game depending on team factors such as how good or poor an offense or a defense is for NBA teams involved in a contest, the availability of key players, whether the game is a regular season or postseason contest… the factors affecting a game’s points total from a sportsbook are myriad.

The over/under will be set by the sportsbook based on how many points are projected to be scored when two teams meet up. Game 1 for the 2020 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers was set at 217.5 with the 'juice' or 'vig' (the fee charged by a bookmaker for accepting a gambler's wager) -110 on both sides. The final score was 116-98 for the Lakers, a combined total of 214 points. A winning $100 wager on the Under would return you $190 – your initial bet plus $90 in profit.

When placing an NBA over/under bet, you do not have to wager $100, it could be any amount you want.

Our Odds Calculator can help you determine how much you could win based on the amount you bet.

Many NBA games can be tough to handicap when point spreads are involved - the NBA over/under wager however gives sports bettors the opportunity to cheer on both team’s defense and offense. The winner of the game is of no consequence.

The payout of an over/under is typically -110. Like in point spread wagering, it’s $11 to win $10 ($21 payout). Sometimes, the sports book will add extra “juice” to either side of the total. Adding the extra juice is one way a sports book can keep the total the same while still creating an advantage to the house. For example, if the total of 210 in the Warriors vs 76ers game shown in the previous section receives a large majority of over bets, you may see -115 or -120 show up next to the over. This is called a “line move,” which typically reflects a sports book trying to reduce some liability by pushing action to the opposite bet – in this case the under.

Here is an example taking the same game shown above, with the sports book adding juice or a tax on betting either side.

In this example, the sports book has modified the return payoff for a bettor taking the over. Taking the over in this scenario will require a $12 bet for a $10 return ($22 payout). Many factors such as injuries or line-up changes can affect the over/under so keep an eye on things when betting NBA totals.

Betting on an NBA over/under is one of the simplest wagers a sports bettor can make in all of sports betting. Pinning down a winner is not necessary and many times, trying to get the best of a point spread can be difficult. This is especially true if you do not care for either team and who wins is unimportant to you. Instead, anticipating the flow of the game and understanding some basic statistical information is what is needed to reach a decision on which side of the total you will be on. Fortunately, there is plenty of information available online – most of it at no charge, so there’s no reason not to take advantage of it.

Digging deeper, average points scored and average points allowed are two very simple starting points. Looking back at the last 3 to 5 games will give you an idea of the short term trends that an NBA team is experiencing - are they playing good defense? Are they on a scoring binge? These factors typically help make it easier to solve the puzzle of a game total as opposed to a point spread.

Both terms mean the same when betting on the combined score of both teams in an NBA contest. Sportsbooks may refer to the same bet type by either name and will often make sure to use both names when talking about a bet. Sports betting language also varies from country to country so if you are betting outside of North America be sure to check you are placing the right types of bet even if the name sounds similar.
