Naomi Osaka Makes Triumphant Return to Tennis, Wins Brisbane International

Brisbane, Australia – January 7, 2025

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced her return to top-tier tennis in spectacular fashion, capturing the Brisbane International title in her first tournament back after a 15-month hiatus.

The former World No. 1, who stepped away from the sport in late 2023 to focus on her mental health and spend time with her newborn daughter, Shai, delivered a dominant performance, defeating reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff in a thrilling three-set final (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).

'I’m just so grateful to be back out here doing what I love,' an emotional Osaka said during the trophy presentation. 'Becoming a mom changed my perspective on everything, but it also made me realize how much I missed competing. This win is for my daughter and everyone who supported me during my break.'

Osaka’s powerful baseline game and improved mental resilience were on full display throughout the tournament, as she knocked out three top-20 opponents en route to the championship. Tennis analysts have already dubbed her a serious contender for the upcoming Australian Open, where she has previously won twice.

Fans and fellow players celebrated her comeback on social media, with Serena Williams tweeting, 'The queen is back! So proud of you, @naomiosaka. The tour just got a whole lot more exciting.'

With this victory, Osaka is projected to re-enter the WTA top 50 ahead of Melbourne, marking one of the most inspiring comebacks in recent tennis history.
