Even among the Mass Effect trilogy’s multitude of distinct alien races, the quarians stand out as biologically and culturally unique.
BioWare 's galaxy-spanning Mass Effect trilogy features a number of unique and recognizable alien species . While players are always cast as the human Commander Shepard, a majority of the story's supporting characters belong to any number of alien species . The nomadic quarians are among the most iconic of Mass Effect 's alien races.
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya , a mechanical genius and consistent ally throughout the trilogy, is perhaps the most notable member of the quarian species. While their nomadic nature is distinct, as it's a result of their homeward being conquered by the geth, quarian biology is even more unique.
Physically, quarians do not differ greatly from humans: Both are bipedal humanoids with two legs, two arms, two eyes, a nose and a mouth. There are small differences, however. Quarians possess only three fingers and toes on each hand and foot. Their knees are also bowed backwards, similar to a bird or the back leg of a horse, giving them a unique silhouette.
While quarians are never seen in-game without their enviro-suits, under certain circumstances it is possible to see a picture of Tali without her mask on in Mass Effect 3. This picture reveals that quarian faces look quite similar to humans', with the main differences being dark grey eyes and black markings along the forehead and neck.
The most noticeable aspect of the quarians is their signature enviro-suits, which they must wear at all times. The race's expulsion from their homeworld of Rannoch forced them to live aboard spaceships for generations, and this sterile environment has dramatically reduced their naturally weak immune systems. Highly vulnerable to disease and infection, the quarians wear their enviro-suits to protect them from outside contamination. Their ships often contain highly sterilized rooms where their suits can be removed safely, but most quarians are reluctant to do so unless absolutely necessary.
It is possible for quarians to remove their suits for short lengths of time, if they take several precautions. If the player chooses to romance Tali in Mass Effect 2, a scene towards the end of the game will show her remove her suit in order to be intimate with Commander Shepard . Tali explains she has taken antibiotics and herbal supplements in order to bolster her immune system and reduce the risk of disease.
If the player also romances Tali in Mass Effect 3, a similar scene will play out. After a moment of intimacy, Shepard asks Tali whether she is alright after having removed her suit. Tali explains that her immune system has adapted to Shepard's, and that she no longer experiences a negative reaction from being with him. This reveals that a quarian's body can become accustomed to certain exposures, reducing the need for the enviro-suit's protection.
Another interesting aspect of quarian biology is that they are a dextro-protein based species, similar to the turians, as opposed to levo-protein based species such as humans and asari. This means that quarians -- and turians -- are unable to eat the same foods as many other Mass Effect races. This shared aspect of their biology can become common ground for Tali and turian squadmate Garrus Vakarian , should the two begin a romance in Mass Effect 3.
Even among the multitude of unique alien races in the Mass Effect trilogy, the quarians stand out. Their fairly humanoid appearance is offset by their ever-present enviro-suits, which give them all a very unique design. As one of the trilogy's most prominent characters, Tali'Zorah nar Rayya acts as the face of the quarian people for both hardcore fans and casual players.
